[Incomplete] The Legionaire Harbor Bridge for SA

Greetings from beyond the grave...

Before you start to read, I must warn this item is for experienced modders only, meaning if you just know how to follow instructions and install mods, this isn't for you. This is more a release of models of a defunct project I had been working on in 2006. I spent countless hours on this and really hate to see it go to waste, so I'm releasing it to the public so other modders may finish it or use it in their own mods. These files come setup for quick installation, basically you create a folder in /data/maps/ called sa420, then add these three files (sa420.ipl, sa420.ide and sa420.img) to the gta.dat loading script. I hope there has been advancing in the world of SA-Modding since 2006, but at least at the time in order for me to install this, I had to remove models from the game with moomapper. I used Ocean City Warehouses.

The Legionaire Harbor Bridge was the first project of 'San Andreas Highway 420' or SA420. The idea behind this project was to use the existing highway along with new sections to create a large complete highway around San Andreas. This bridge was the first, connecting the lower Los Santos highway with the Countryside Highway across the bay. The bridge starts in the southwest corner of the LS-Airport and would have ended near the southeast corner of the Countryside (no connection made).

The Bridge itself is loosely based on the 1000 Islands International Bridge on Interstate 81 in Alex Bay, New York. The design of the cables and support towers. Major difference is the real life bridge is a single deck two lane bridge, and this bridge is a 4 lane double decker (8 total lanes). Also it should be noted the wierd design on the tower is taken from my 1st suspension bridge from Interstate 420 for Vice City.

The bridge approach involves a new landmass with some small areas. The land itself is grassy with alot of trees placed in. It connects with the original highway via an intersection. At the intersection you'll find some various things, a little area with original SA models and food stands. At the opening of the approach roads is a statue of me (Deathsquad) from Vice City, holding my Castor Guns. A little west of the intersection is an access road which goes around and under the approach roads to two small areas.

The Dock & Marina area was an experimental area and 'hang out' for me. involves a set of docks, one side is filled with 'industrial' items from the game (and in my version the magnet crane). The other side is a small marina with my 1968 Stardust Cruiser houseboat model at one of the docks. The boat ramp was built because I actually attempted to 'trailer' a boat with an extra large flatbed trailer and a pickup truck. It almost worked. I relocated the magnet crane to this location because you can take my Houseboat vehicle/boat mod, and use the magnet to take another vehicle and place it on the roof of the houseboat and drive around with it.

The powerhouse is nothing but a large 3d brick building with nice interior windows. It was going to extend to the other side of the shore, making a 'head ponds' out of the small bay for hydropower. The sturcture itself is based on an old powerhouse near where I live. Obviously there was more to it, which is why one side of the building is mostly open to the world.

Point Of Interest: You can find real pictures of both the bridge and powerhouse in the 1968 Stardust Cruiser vehicle replacement mod. Pictures of the dam are in the main cabin, with the bridge in the bedroom. (They are not in houseboat model found on this map).

This project came to a halt when I became involved with the State of Liberty project. In the end I became burnt out on all GTA modding mainly due to the long hours I was spending on it. I would spend 8+ hour days, weeks on end with these projects, and at some point your brain melts and runs out your nose. This was 2006 and I haven't had the urge to do anymore work. Would be nice to finish the other side of this bridge though and make it a complete mod. I haven't been active on these forums for awhile, so I have no clue if any advances were made with SA modding.

The download is available directly from the Deathsquad Industries site, linked below this text. My website has changed locations and been 'slightly' updated. All the download links have been fixed, which have been broken for a year. You can find my other work there, namely Interstate 420 for Vice City, the 1968 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat (#1 boat download in gtagarage woo!) for SA (and the old version for VC), and my Roadtrain mod for SA trailers.

I may release some of the other few things I had been working on, possibly the models from the work I did for the State of Liberty, I need to contact McKay to see if he's fine with it. I'm responsible for the Tunnel System and Staunton Plaza, some of my best work since it was at the end of my career.

Later dayz.

Deathsquad Industries Homepage

Update 02/01/2009: The download has been removed because I am going to work on this project, and come out of retirement, I feel the need to create some stuff. I also removed it because I see alot of additional files in the IMG file, including Rockstar Heights by Solo though I do have his full permission to use the mod in mine. It was going to be a part of the I420C mod, it sat way on top of 'Happy Fun Time Island' which was the last addition I never finished on it.

This whole first post will be redone at some point, for now, we go to work.

wait,this is two floor bridge?

(i got bored while reading half of text)

was that hard to make a new folder by yourself and make new gta.dat file in download?

just an suggestion, you better give map where's this bridge is (i understand where, but much people doesn't).

Keep up the good work! icon14.gif

EDIT: Ok,i did read all text. SO the houseboat is YOURS? I remember while long time ago had fun with it. it was good work.

Now reinstalling my SA to look at all this ''sh*t''.

Ok I made the new folder SA420 in the maps folder.

Updated the GTA.DAT with all the relevant information.

And my game fails to start. I am pretty sure it has something to do with GTA.DAT.

I doubt I would need to delete anything, im pretty sure the game can handle the extra IPL.

Maybe not though, I dont know.

If maybe someone actually get this ingame, and publish the steps I would be very grateful.

Looks good Death, I hope I can get it to work.

Heyho..

tested it, and love it. If I get it right, you allow others to work on this files? If so, can you provide the max files if you used max, including textures? Because it needs some different shadings, it seems a bit lacking of contrast and different materials.

However, I enjoyed it, ad here are some screens:

@silvermanblue: If you are installing it onto a clean copy of SA then yes, I'm 95% sure you'll have to remove some other models from the game, or at least their ide & ipl connections.

.. Far as I can remember there was only roughly 5 additional IDE slots left in the game before you reached the max, anything after 5 caused the game to crash. Its the reason i stopped modding, because I wanted to work on SA and couldn't. Now that 2 years have passed, there might have been something created to fix this. I see there's a SA Limit Adjuster program now, so hopefully much like the VC Limit Adjuster it can expand on the IDEs (I had to do this for the VC I420 Mod), but I've yet to really explore any accomplishments of the past 2 years on SA. I am going to be working on instructions, hopefully someone beats me to it though.

@Threepwood: Yes, this mod was posted so others could play with it, maybe complete it or use it in their own mods, its one of my 'best 'pieces of work and I don't want to see it lost to the null void that is my HD, might as well share the work. All my work is done in Zmod 1 and 2 (main construction in Zmod 1, Additional Work & Prefix Lighting done in Zmod 2). So I can post a z3d file of it with the tga texture files. I am planning on doing this with a bunch of my models, if you check my homepage under Project Gallery, you'll see a listing of model work I have done (its both a list of what I hope to post, but more just me organizing a billion files in a billion folders).

.. Also look at the logo of my website, because my original concept had a good section of the bridge a 'green' color, like its real life counterpart. That had more contrast with the roadbed and I think looked better, people here back in '06 said otherwise though. Also it the group of pictures you can see a 'construction' picture of it still green.

.. Thank you all for the compliments, its actually made my modding bug kind of itch, and I might even scratch it, pending some computer upgrades. Was another reason I stopped modding, I'm not much of a gamer outside a few select series so my graphics card is crap (Radeon X300 at a whopping 64mb). I plan to drop a 1gig card in and expand my ram by 3 gigs, which should vastly improve things.

.. Main goal in this mod would be finishing the other side of the bridge, which will kind of replace that cliff around on the countryside with a sharp sloping hill down into the ocean, maybe make a beach area or hell, a 'State Park'. Might be an improvement because its not fun to fall off that cliff and get stuck in the ocean...been there, done that. Help is welcome, though besides textures the only other thing I can think of is if its possible to add paths to SA, get some vehicle and ped traffic going over it.

I actually got it working, it looks great! I have been trying to make a decent connection with in game pieces. but its slow going. I might end up just extending the highway all the way to chilliad. Lining up the pieces in my map ed is a pain in the ass to say the least.

The above picture is one I was talking about, back when the bridge structure was green. I think this looks better than the current concept, which as said I had many say it was 'ugly' in the green color, though its the color of the real-life counterpart.

This above is the original San An 420 Highway Improvement Project, Blue is original SA highway, red is new 'additions' that would be added to make the entire system a little more free flowing. I forget if people thought it was a good thing or not, the only other idea for this project would be to make an entirely new highway roughly on the outter borders of SA. Could kind of use the idea of the Vice City 420, have an outter ring and two inner roads cutting north/south and east/west.

Main question is, is this mod worth working on... I pose that question because after a week of looking around, I think the Total Conversion mods are the one people are watching, and then of course eyes are on GTA IV.

Either way at the minimum I'm going to finish this bridge, already begun surveying the opposite side, but of course gotta find time to sit down and actually get work done.

.. Well currently the mod is 'offline' for downloads, since I'm going to work on it, changed some of the text above, will probably revamp the first post in total, since I guess I'm no longer in retirement. Anyways, above is the new landmass, nothing fancy, good landscape isn't my thing, but I figure a road project probably wouldn't do anything fancy, fill it in, plain it out. The trees are temp, I want to give a forest look, and call it a State Park. Still needs texture work, and some polygon shifting at either end.

.. Next will be the approach road followed by the ramps. This side of the bridge will feature a four finger ramp (like the I420C ramps) with merging lanes into the current highway. The opposite side will remain a regular lighted intersection, since I find the road's position on the curve makes it very easy to access at high speeds, especially on the bikes. I remember the reason I didn't make merging ramps on this side was due to the tunnel and not enough room with the airport wall to make proper ramps.

.. I also plan on importing a few things from my VC highway, namely the use of Solo's Rockstar Island house (permission given by Solo) and my simple but effectively creepy graveyard, and place it on this new landmass above. The house I might revamp inside with fresh interior too, if I go that far.

.. Tonight though I plan on finishing the 2nd section of the Powerhouse building. Makes ya feel old when Friday nights turn into a quiet evening at home watching [AS] and making models....

And now we have a full connection between both ends. Lots of repairs on the new set of ramps though, including prelighting them. I will probably post a new topic when I re-release this as an actual mod, just because I screwed up the topic subject and this project has gone in another direction, well concidering I wasn't even going to finish it originally. Anyways, more to come later.

The powerhouse is basically done, I want to add an interior. Main idea is this is Deathsquad Central for San Andreas, so the interior will be half house, half office, half garage. The 2nd 'basement' floor has a ramp from the main entrance leading down into it.

Right now I'm mainly working on prelighting and fixing minor details in the models. There are still several additions I plan to add to this before v1.0 comes out, such as...

1. Rockstar Heights Home by Solo.

- First off yes I have his written permission to use that mod from several years ago. I've always liked this house, as its was one of the first mods I installed into LC (along with Intercity Highway). The place itself has always reminded me of the house from the movie Psycho, and there's that motel located on the countryside right at the end of the ramps. So I want to place that behind the motel up on a hill/cliff, along with an overhaul of the interior, much like the powerhouse and my houseboat, I'll just recycle Rockstar's models with given credits of course, cause I know I sure as hell can't make a good looking couch.

2. Morningwood Cemetary.

- This is from my VC-I420 mod, its just a simple graveyard. I might just remake it all. Will be located behind and below the Rockstar house.

3. Deathsquad Tower

- Originally built for the SoL mod as the building in Staunton Plaza. Unsure of its location, somewhere on the LS side. This is just a 3d building that's somewhere in the area of 60 floors. No inside interior due to the polygon usage just for fully 3d walls and windows.

If I continue beyond this, the next section is the SF part of the SA420 system. Main idea is it will add a highway along the western end of SF and it will either connect into the highway and cross over the Golden Gate bridge, or I will make a new bridge that will sit next to the golden gate. Secondary idea would be to run a highway all the way around the NW corner of SA, running from SF to the Vegas city with various exits off of it. But of course, one thing at a time.

Looking interesting, I remember the graveyard from VC. You plan to add some vertex lighting to that powerhouse, right? it looks awesome, and it would look better. You could also add some 2dfx like water splashes.

Looking awesome inlove.gif

Took this for ya, yes thats mainly what I was doing last night, doing final touches on the model and giving it a proper prelighting, left the outside pretty much dark at night except some highlights on the corner pillars and the pillars between the turbines. With the 3d windows and total interior lighted up brighter than death, it lights the building up pretty good at night. All pieces in this mod will be prelighted, unlike my VC-I420 mod which was made before Zmod2 came out. Always wanted to prelight the I420 but if I do that, I'm going to get into rebuilding the whole thing, those models are so messy.

EDIT: Anyone know any other pieces of furniture like the park benches that spawns people? I've thrown a bunch of park benches around my area since I see they spawn people. Thus it gives me someone to kill while running around my area, I don't think I got the skill for making SA paths.

in map editor just search for ''bench''. there's like 4 or 5 different ones which spawns peds on them.

@mah: I'm guessing you got this mod off somebody elses site, because all my downloads are disabled, due to the fact that it was unfinished work I was releasing because I didn't think I was going to finish it, then I started to finish it, and go beyond that.

If you did get the unfinished work and are using the SA Limit Adjuster files with it, you need to active (delete the #) the following parts in the salimits.ini file (open with a txt prog like notepad).

ColModels=10176Collision Files=281IDEs=14026

I'm not sure if you have to adjust all three of those either, I think from all the research and catching up that I've done it was namely the collision file limit creating the +5 Limit SA has as a stock game. Also you might not want to use the numbers I've provided above, my current version of SA is the version I started this project on back in 2006. I got beyond the +5 limit by removing stock game models, namely the warehouses in the Ocean Docks area, and or the whole zone if need be. Thankfully the SA Limit Adjuster was created and seems to do the trick, I get a crash every now and then from the audio but besides that, works good enough for me. I have yet to install this project on a clean version of SA.

In other news...

The above isn't a highway around San Andreas, just a bridge crossing the harbor near LS to the countryside which happens to include a hydro powerdam for random kicks. BUT, I had started on Phase 2 which was a section of highway to the west of SF that would connect to the golden gate bridge, when the project went in other directions. So yes, I am building a highway all the way around San Andreas.

Indeed, I guess I can't rest in the GTA modding world until I've built a highway around San Andreas, and so I shall. I find the current design of the SA highways to be not so interstate like, namely the curves. Curves are a great highway device which help keep you alert, this was realized after the US built their interstate system, which pretty much avoided major curves. Government wise I know they were designed to have 1 mile straight aways every 5 miles so the military could land planes on it. Anyways...

The San Andreas Interstate 420 will be a very straight roadway, as it will hug the game border of San Andreas, so in the end it will be one giant loop, basically square with curves in the four corners of the map. There will of course be various exits namely to any major location the highway comes by, and rest stops and anything else anyone wants to throw in idea wise, same idea of the I420 for Vice City, but as said, much much better and more professional looking. Again like VC it will be a 'free floating' system, meaning its not built into the land and will sit on supports for the most part.

The Legionaire Bridge won't be a part of the highway system, it will be part of the mod though. The highway will go by the area, I might try to make an interchange between the two, depending on time. I'll probably also release the bridge itself as a seperate mod (with the powerhouse area). I might do that by the weekend.

Anyways, I'm planning on starting a new topic for this, since its now 'San An I420' and not just the bridge, so if a moderator happens to pass by, feel free to lock this subject so it can idle itself away. Thank you.

- Deathsquad

PS: Oh yeah, I do have a picture of the highway, though I'll note that its alignment has shifted, these pictures are in SF where I began, its moved out of the water so that beach isn't blocked. Kind of hard to race the go cart when there's highway supports taking up the beach.
