Real Life Branding

Recommended Posts

This wouldn't be plausible, and I doubt we'll be seeing product placement in a GTA game due to the fact a lot of big name brands are reluctant to be associated with such a controversial game, not to mention the fees and permission Rockstar would have to acquire.

Mainland Marauder

This has been covered before, particularly with car brand names....

Anyway, in short - no.

This is what modders are for, and I don't want games to become commercials. I'd rather the ads be parodies. As soon as they became real it would be obvious that Rockstar has given up being funny and going straight for the money.

Vanilla Shake

What they said. No.

For one, it wouldn't feel like GTA if you had Burger King and Best Buy and Walmart in the game, because there are parodies for many national chains already in the series.

Burger Shot = Burger King.

Sprunk = Sprite.

Besides, I doubt any of these stores or brands would want their names associated with Grand Theft Auto, the most controversial video game series of all time.

Let Rockstar stick to creating funny parodies, because that's one of the main purposes of these games: to spoof America.

Omnia sunt Communia

Grand Theft Auto has been about parodying real life, not emulating it. It's been that way since GTA 1. I can't see Rockstar changing their tune all of a sudden. I know I for one wouldn't like to see it. I like to feel detached from reality when playing GTA, not like I'm living it.

They would make a lot of money by adding real companies into the game. It's very very good advertising, and the big multinational firms would pay millions to be featured

No. They wouldn't. I doubt there's any company who would pay Rockstar to feature their brand in Grand Theft Auto. GTA is the most controversial gaming series around. Any company silly enough to allow their brand to feature in GTA would be bombarded with waves of sh*t.

I'm sure some companies would pay, but that's not so much the point. I don't want GTA or any game trying to sell me a product. Parodies, sure, that's great, but I don't really want to sit and listen to a McDonald's commercial on the in-game radio while on some chase.

Companies would not pay sh*t. Like you said about best buy, My father ( 66 now hopefully retiring tounge.gif ) is a corporate executive for best buy and I know from all his friends from work that I have met, would not pay R* to feature them in an extremely controversial video game. I can see them MAYBE allowing R* to just put their name in if they paid a sh*tload, but for what point? I hardly pay attention, all the years I have played GTA I just see the food icon on my mini map I go in and get food to boost health then I walk out. I hardly pay attention to car names either.

only if they pay rockstar.

The way things are today, game makers pay to use real brands. In ANY other medium that I can think of right now, movies etc, are paid for product placement. Not games.

Until this changes, I don't see it happening, because on the scale of a GTA Game it would be quite expensive.

The spoof brands that are in GTA can also be construed as references to the other games in the series.

And a fair few people have said that the real life companies would not want to be associated with a game that is so controversial. My reasoning for this is that the poor, underpaid, mistreated, laughed at sap who dresses up as Ronald McDonald at kid's parties would snap, bash the kids, bash the parents, steal a car, ram down more kids at the parties and then grab their revolver and kill countless people, before saying, 'Well, I played Grand Theft Auto."

Well, I think more of the controversy comes from the Jack Thompson types and the media whores who they catch on a slow news day to talk about the impending destruction of society perpetrated by GTA and other games upon today's youths. I've been hearing that sh*t for longer than today's "kids" playing GTA have been around. It's the same "blame Hollywood, blame TV, blame whatever piece of technology that we use to babysit our kids" copout, with stooges like Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore in positions of influence (current or past) to try and impose change through the law. McDonald's can still buy a stadium billboard in the next Madden if they want. EA never turns down money.
