I hear you guys talking about it, showing commands, etc. But nobody EVER says what the heck commandline.text is, and how to get it to work.

Because really, pulling up notepad and typing things in really doesn't work. Explain yourselves, please.

Create commandline.txt(make sure it's not commandline.txt.txt ! if you don't have extensions visible, create file "commandline" using notepad, do not add ".txt" after the name) in your gtaiv folder, write the commands you want, save the file, run the game, it works.

No, if your machine is stable as is, nothing wrong can happen.

The OP is asking how does it work.

 

The GTAIV executable has been programmed to look for a 'commandline.txt' in the main folder of GTAIV, read and execute the commands in there. In most cases, .cfg files are used. Like in Counter-Strike or Crysis. But it works basically the same. Since the commandlines are 'forced' commands on the software, there are no 'filters' or 'limits' to the command, and it does not go through the software's GUI. That's why when you force an 1440 x 900 resolution on GTAIV via a commandline.txt, the game will render at a 800 x 600 rendering resolution but in a 1440 x 900 window.
