PC piracy and gta4

Question

Vert101

Is piracy the reason behind the poor sales of GTA4?(on PC); or is it developers that are killing the PC gaming industry? I'd like to hear your thoughts about this issue.

I have probably bought over 500 copies of original PC games in my time. This obviously makes me a nerd or an idiot. But I bought them with bugs and all. And I'm sure that a lot of other people out there have done the same.

Is piracy the end of the PC gaming industry?... Or is it Developers who are trying to end PC gaming, by putting out crappy ports, or insane security measures which only hurts legitimate customers?

Your thoughts please.

Crappy Ports, DRM is killing PC gaming. Not piracy. The developers and publisher just want to hide their sorry ass and blame piracy that is killing PC and that is totally wrong.

I have been playing that long easy

Dont get me wrong, I am not starting anything but that is a high number of titles.

As for your question....PC gaming wont die for a long time. Hardware manufacturers have alot at stake. They will put more of there two cents in to keep it going. Look how much us fools pay for this stuff. Too much money to be lost all around.

If todays developers were to drop out somebody would take over, the market is too big to leave a void.

ok maybe not 500... but I have bought a lot of games. From the Amiga 500 time and a little before... like the Amstrad CPC464. I think that I have done my part to support the gaming industry anyway. confused.gif

They are low becaose most of the people have already bougth it for consoles.

ok so would a cross console release of this game have been better? PC gamers are still going be hit by crappy ports and extreme DRM measures.

I'd like to see the PC gaming industry get back on it's feet. I mean FFS we're the ones that made Devs what they are today.

we shouldn't have to take this crap.

But I doubt that piracy is to blame for crappy ports. Devs just have to take a good look at their priorities. Do they want to support the PC gaming industry? Or do they want it off their cards, and go console? I'm not sure... I won't be buying a console ever again though... I have a superior system now. Why would I want to go backwards. confused.gif

Once again not starting anything but this is NOT a crappy port. Anybody that can run it PROPERLY would have no choice but to agree. Needs a little polishing but far far from a crappy port. This will be argued for a long time but if people get to see it run on the right machine they would change their tune. (But only if they owned the machine). That inlies the problem, everybody wants to play it but they cant so they are mad.

My PC wasnt doing it as high as I wanted so I bumped it up and have been loving it since.

I agree with him on that. I don't think there are that many people that are wholly dedicated to getting it on PC. Most of us, excluding myself, have a console to play GTA IV, and that's how the majority of people chose to play it.

Besides, even though it was likely for a PC version, it wasn't confirmed at the time the console version was released. Maybe if it was announced 'PC version coming soon' at time of console release, more people would've decided to wait. Developing and releasing the game earlier also would've increased sales.

The lack of knowledge + the 7-month wait/decline of interest + the numerous bugs and complaints is why GTA IV PC wasn't as successful as expected.

As a whole, the PC as a gaming isn't dead, and probably never will be! It is the most versatile, well rounded, customisable, and graphically superior I might add, gaming system there is. It will never die. Consoles are inferior, IMO barf8bd.gif .

Your right I wouldnt have bought it for the PS3 if I would have known it would come out on PC. I only played it through about 6 missions on the PS3 and it sat all this time. I was thrilled when it came out on PC.

look at it this way, i have a fairly common setup really and if i didn't know how to get round securom i would of returned the game by now as it doesn't work on my PC.

i've helped quite a few people get round this problem now - so i bet theres probably quite a few more who just returned the game.

r*'s answer of "ask securom" is not good enough, YOU bought the technology YOU inplemented it so YOU should make sure it works for everyone BEFORE you put it in or just don't put it in at all.

DRM has been around for ages now and it's done nothing to stop people getting the game through illegal means.

in general though pc gaming just isn't a popular with the masses it's not one single thing killing it its a combination of all different factors.

maybe you should have helped a lot more people with securom... because there were thousands... if not millions that hated the first version of this game for PC, and sent it back tounge.gif

BTW I'm not saying it's your fault Nova sad.gif

I still think that Devs have to look at their priorities.

I still think it's a bit crappy to hit honest customers with these DRM measures that R* and microsoft have hit us with. Just for the record... NOT EVERYONE IS A PIRATE. Stop treating PC gamers like they are pirates; and maybe your sales will pick up. Maybe not though... maybe the damage has already been done.

Man, you can't nail piracy to pc.

There is piracy to liberty city stories and vice city stories. neither one of those made it to pc. there are more console pirates out there than pc pirates. I mean think of it, there are more console gamers than pc gamers, more than 100 times more. do a search on one of those pirate sites (im not linking or naming one that's for sure) for a game specific, and platform specific. Yeah you can comfort yourself with saying " oh they aint smart enough" . but really, if they weren't, then who is seeding and who is downloading ? you can see how many seeders and how many leechers out there there are.

Heck i was talking to a dude the other day at work and talked about gtaiv and he said " yeah I think I will just download it" so I asked him his specs. he looked puzzled. then I asked "what are you playing it on????" he said " Oh, 360, it's just a software mod I got from (a torrent site) and cracked my new xbox to play pirated games"

I wanted to ask more but really didn't want to care.

Now if you want to know why exactly pc gaming is dead.

You have to think of how the shelves have been stripped of pc games prematurely.

http://truxtertech.com/news/2008/08/is-pc-gaming-dead/

I wrote that crap almost a year ago.

But now, thank god for steam and d2d and so fourth, we are saved. For now. but we will die off

and our numbers will get smaller. Why?.. because it will not be target the masses like consoles do.

Maybe PC gaming is going to die then... at least for some devs. I know that there are a lot of companies out there that target the PC community specifically. And... they make a killing (profit wise I mean... not literally).

And the thing is... when I build a PC, I build it for performance; and I think that a lot of PC gamers out there do too. Just because we have systems that could run circles around the XBOX. It doesn't mean that we are pirates. We just want the games that we buy for PC to be great; obviously some Devs don't see it the same way I do. I mean... GTA4 ran great on my system... after the first patch. But my system is one configuration out of how many? I would say plenty. I can't say that I dont have any problems running this game on my PC, because I have had a few.

They should prolly work on their ports as opposed to protecting their software from piracy so badly. I mean there are honest PC gamers out there... and most of the people that can afford to buy a system that runs these games... can usually afford to buy the game also. But crappy ports tend to lower the amount of customers willing to pay for the product. So... I guess the question I'm asking is "Are developers trying to kill the PC gaming industry by releasing crap... or is it piracy?" Maybe we already know the answer to this one.

You're getting a little off. Ask yourself, if GTA 4 didn't come to the console first, would it have been much better? A lot of developers have moved to consoles but that is because it is easier to code to one machine and a lot more people can afford the console.

No developers are not trying to kill the PC gaming industry. The crap they released was simply due to rushing it, and not caring about it. It is nice to have a video editor but honestly why force us to install and run it to play multiplayer? You know, I didn't need Social Club, I can do without. Make videos and still put them on youtube.

Your only hope is that dumb f*cks stop buying consoles. But they won't. Dumb f*cks ruin everything, and for each one that become a wise-ass like us, there is a new dumb f*ck born cryani.gif

Not piracy but the finance department wants to sniff the sweet smell of profit ASAP.

and recent economical crisis f*cked up everyone as we know so financial departments are a bit more aggressive now.

And yes, companies are not willing to do enough Quality Assurance because simply they don't want to. There are a zillion hardcore gamers who are ready to do QA for free. Look at DCS: Black Shark and how extensively it was tested before it came in the market.

And what would be this "right machine"?

The right machine would be that which is listed as minimum and recommended specs - I don't know why people are having issues, but my minimum spec PC outdoes the Xbox version hands down in every way.

oh come on.. stop blaming piracy for low sales of GTA4 PC. The reason why it failed is because rockstar screwed it, they released a bugged version, where 7 out of 10 people couldn't play it. Piracy has nothing to do with low sales of GTA4 or other games for that matter. It's completely immature when you blame low sales of some crappy game on piracy. Create a good game that is worth it's price, and people will buy it. Did you even see the rating of GTA4 PC on amazon? It's barely made it to 2 stars.

Stop blaming piracy for the low sales of this crappy port. Piracy is not going to kill PC games, developers will. Lately there has been a lot of crappy games coming out and not hitting their targeted sales figures..Guess what, when you sell some crappy game for $50, people are not going to buy that crap. Create a good, stable game and you won't have to blame piracy.

of course they are going to do it. Do you really think they will admit that they released a game full of idiotic bugs that we can't play? Rockstar still didn't admit that they released a stupid port, instead they say that it was created for future hardware. How in the hell can you create a game for future hardware without having this hardware in the first place?

Hey I'm not here defending R*. What I'm saying is that their behaviour and their method of release to the PC gaming communtity is going to cause a lot of distrust towards themselves. And this being said... will it cause the average PC gamer to view any future release of theirs with scorn? If nobody is going to buy it... then why not pirate it? If it's just another piece of XBOX 360 ported piece of crap, then hey... why not? I think that they are supporting piracy, more than they are supporting the honest PC Gamer, who will buy their product, if it is reasonable, and playable.

Amazingly enough... PC gamers actually buy games...

like I said before... we are not all pirates... stop treating us as such

I'll pay. Because of a thing called Morals.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, R* has breathed new life into piracy. They have put it in the open - put pirates on trial in front of their peers - I like what they did to circumvent it, because people may have even cracked that, but there still is a person on here often enough for us to point out as a thief and laugh at, and for me, that's a revolution.
