Smiler-Online
My question is, can we modify a file to tweak the objects draw distance (Not the View or Detail distance - *Objects Draw Distance*) If you look at the pic below you will see the unnecessary objects on screen, ie the big buildings and bridges on the other islands... *Note* all settings are set to minimum, so you can see that these objects load on screen, even when the V&D Distance are turned down to minimum

Turn up quality and you will get the details. What you request will not give you any noticeable frame increase.
Smiler-Online
How are you sure that they won't give a huge frame rate increase?
Gouveia
How are you sure that they won't give a huge frame rate increase? Because they're just boxes. You'll remove 20-30K polies from rendering, and I think that the cars are 17K, so look at what you would gain, nothing. Also, it would look dull to see the buildings poping up. TruXter
Change game settings to be editable http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=380830 . if you do not then the game will not load after you tweak. (read second page, someone more experienced gives better detail) \Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\pc\data in timecyc.dat change everything under "FarClp" down to 1/3 what it says. most items are set to 1500. turn those down to 500, and so on. Don't listen to these newbs. they just like having piss pout parties. use Notepad++ Lines things up better than just plain ol notepad. Have fun Good luck. Smiler-Online
I get much more playable frame rates with that tweak! Now I'm gonna try tweaking a few more settings in that file to get the frame rate up that little extra! *NOTE* I got about 8fps extra average frame rates, and now I just want to find what is causing the minor stutters here and there... Smiler-Online
I'm trying to fix it... J/k, sounds fair. lol... anyways... I'm just about to see what it performs like without the water reflections now (because if the water is like GTASA then it'll be under you everywhere, so that may also make a negetive impact on performance) of course, I am only trying to find the big problems, and once I have found them, then I can turn the graphics up high on the things that only use up 2-3fps! So please!!!, no flaming! *UPDATE* no luck with that tweak... :S Edited January 18, 2009 by smiler_16

belinda
@ smiler_16 i benched the fps and video memory impact of farclp here. it can help you to get a little more fps and a bit less stutter, but don't expect any miracle results. players with fast systems even want to consider raising farclp for even more view distance and a clearer athmosphere for just a little fps hit. my mate pixelated looked into raising farclp here. thales100
Thanks it works, FPS dropped from 60+ (vsync on, original value) to 35 (using 3500) - just a little fps hit - but the result looks good. GFX settings HIGH - HIGHEST - 100 - 100 - 100 - 16, 1680 x 1050. Qx9650 running at 3.67Ghz. It looks more realistic in the first image, as really you shouldn't be able to see that far and it gradually goes out of frame instead of pointlessly rendering the entire city. You need to disable the file check, or it is reinstall time. I use this one as it doesn't mess your folder up as much as the magicIV. http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=380830 Use the asi loader and the check disabler, hopefully you wont have to reinstall using this one. If it still cuts out of loading you may need to reinstall then use one of the check disable tools like the one above but again I think it may work on an already modified IV.
