Hi, I'm Dan. A Newbiee.

I've purchased GTA a few days ago for PC, installed it etc and its like a slide show to play. I've read through some threads on here, esp the system requirements but unsure what will i need to make it play.

I've lowered all the settings to 1 and LOW but it still stutters, but not half as much.

I built my own gaming computer about 2 or 3 years ago and at the time it could handle anything you threw at it.

ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE

Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX

4 GB RAM (4x1GB)

AMD Athlon 4800+ X (2.4Ghz)

800W Thermale Tank? PSU (Cost 120 Pounds when new)

Aftermakket CPU Cooler, Cool Breeze or something. (Cost 40 Poubnds)

Several Cooling Fans

Now it seems a shame not being able to play it with all the settings to the max.

I was looking at this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?MenuNo...Menu=y&doy=18m1

The 2nd Or 3rd one down

AMD website says the 9550 is better for gaming.

I'd keep my current GFX card or possibly purchase a 2nd one so i can use it as duel!

Any help would be greatful and i can offer support as well.

Thanks

Dan

Dan, your CPU is one of the weakest CPUs out there ..... your performance isnt suprising.

I dont keep up with AMD but everything else is fine. Your 8800 GTX will last you a while longer. I have an 8800 GTX 768 Mb and as you say it still will take anything you can throw at it. Maybe a Mobo and CPU and you should see one hell of a difference. I am sure you have been reading the Quad core is what you need.

I have a Q9550 Quad and it runs it like a champ. Dont know if you are stuck on AMD but I can tell you my Intel is doing the job. I cannot say what your mobo will accept beyond what you have as far as a processor goes.

If nothing else....Quad, Quad, Quad! For this game.

Of course Intel will mean switching MOBO.

I'd go for an Intel Q6600 quadcore processor and motherboard combo (~£200), since that chip overclocks like a beast. Much better value for money than anything AMD has to offer at the moment.

I have the Q6600 @ 3.63GHz ... you cannot buy a better chip for $180, not only that this chip is better then 95% of CPu's out there.

Maybe a little high, but there are only about a handful of chips that are better and they cost almost twice as much.

I had almost the exact same system and upgraded to a EVGA 750i Motherboard and a Intel Quad-core Q9400 CPU and there was a big difference. The 8800GTX I still have but it was obvious the cpu was the bottleneck. I was getting 15-25 FPS and now it's more like a minimum of 25-40 FPS depending on what's going on. I'm really pleased.

Regards,

Hans

For £240 that would be a waste of money mate, honestly. You could get a Q6600 and Intel mobo for less than that and it would be far better not just for this game but for everything.

Get a Q6600. It's fairly cheap, lots of customizing possibilities, and you can overclock it to stupidly high frequencies without spending sh*tloads on cooling systems. I've got one myself, and it hasn't failed me once.

Phenom 9950 rapes GTA, running high settings with avg 40fps, highly reccomended.

Indeed it does. I've had fairly good luck with my Phenom 9950 and crossfired 4850's. Framerate is still lower than it should be, but that's just Rockstar's rushed and botched port. It'd be tolerable if the end result didn't look like a five year old game.

I've got a bit of bad news for the OP. Rockstar went sort of insane and decided not to bother supporting SLI, so the only route to dual GPU happiness in GTA IV is ATI Crossfire. As far as I can tell, this may be the only game in existence that doesn't allow you to override and force SLI (or force anti-aliasing for that matter).

So if you are thinking about upgrades for the sake of this game I'd say don't bother. It's completely atypical...use something like Fallout 3 or Farcry 2 to figure out what you need to upgrade.

Sorry about the wee rant. I'd been a GTA Fanboy for so many years that I think something snapped when I saw how badly Rockstar botched this port (and their incredibly arrogant and insulting reply to the problems) and I still haven't recovered.

Like others have said, your problem is the CPU. Its holding the entire system back.

Do you have a budget of some sort? If you gave us a budget to work with we could give you the best possible deal.

Like others said, its best to go for a Intel quad, but then you'll have to buy a new motherboard. But the Intel quads definitely beat the Phenoms performance wise and offer the best price/performance.

Besides, you could really do with a motherboard upgrade as that board is pretty old.

The Q6600 is an excellent processor and despite being a bit old, is still considered to be one of the best 'bang for buck' processors. Its capable of reaching much higher speeds than its stock too.

It would also help a lot if you gave us another site as most of Maplin's motherboards are out of stock. Their range isn't all that good either. Very limited.

What because you have tried the 9950 and the Q6600? if you havent, how do know?

The Q6600 IS better than the 9950. You don't have to try out the 9950 to know that.

I googled both of them, and opinions seem to be split on which one is better.

The Q6600 and 9950 are pretty equally matched, but I still say that the Q6600 is a better option than the 9950. If he gets an Intel board and a Q6600 now, he'd have a lot of room to upgrade to a better quad later on. Most quads completely destroy the 9950.

Another reason is overclocking potential of the Q6600s. They overclock like hell and deliver some serious performance when overclocked. The 9950 CANNOT match the Q6600 in OC capability. The Q6600, despite being old, is a f*cking beast and can tear through the 9950 with ease with a little bit of overclocking. It beats the 9950 at stock speeds in some benchmarks too.

So, IMO, Q6600>9950 BE.

Don't go for intel!

You will need to buy a new mobo and when you will want the i7, you will again need to buy a new mobo.

If you go for AMD, any quad will be fine for GTAIV, and even if you want to update your phenom quad to a phenom II in the futur, you will be able to keep the same mobo and really cheaper then intel boards and ram.

finally, if you can, get a new phenom II directly, wait a few weeks maybe since prices will drop again very soon.

Intel fans make me laugh with their q6600...
