this is unnecissary as the game already sets the correct affinity, as do all apps in XP and Vista, they default to using both cores unless you tell it otherwise.

well for me fresh installed vista sp1 and updated game don't set dual core on game sow biggrin.gif

If this is true (running on one core by default) then GTA4 is NOT optimized for multiple cores as Rockstar has claimed.

Wait.

When I was on XP x32, the game only used 3 cores and when I upgraded to Vista x64 it used the 4 cores and increased my FPS a lot. So, lolwut for this topic.

This topic was created to spam a useless program. that probably has a useless additional option (but that's the $45 version)

These magic elixir programs are crap.

Completely agree. I think this should be locked... ASAP

My GTAIV is set to two cores automatically. How sad for the OP.

Sets automatically for both cores here as well. As pointed out, the Task Manager can already do this.

how??

Right click on process in task manager and click on 'set affinity'.

You have to do it every time you start the game though. But why would it not be set to 2 already? There's actually a command line program that will set the affinity automatically everytime you start a process.

GTAIV is a CPU hog and dickhead at the same time. It uses Core 0 and Core 1 100% at all times, and uses Core 2 at 30% and uses Core 3 at 10% percent. I've also isolated the problem, as I ran a video converting program alongside GTAIV. The activity in Core 2 and Core 3 ran at 40% minimum. This shows that GTAIV only uses 2 cores max. You don't need a sh*tty program to tell GTAIV what it needs to do wrong on a quad.

But yet it runs on all four cores balanced around 75% each for me.

Can't really argue for or against whether it does optimise properly for dual/four cores as so many people are having different results.

The 100% reading could be down to some bottlenecking though, your CPU could be bottlenecking your GPU a bit. I am the opposite way round and my GPU will be the bottleneck as it's the weaker between my CPU and GPU combination. I really need to get a 280.

There are too many factors to account for while trying to figure out this game, CPU, GPU, FSB and RAM etc.

Was till I broke my motherboard changing over my CPU waterblock on Saturday and had to get a new one, now I am not so rich and the GFX upgrade will have to wait.

I also work for living, I am only spending what I earn. tounge.gif

I was stuck choosing between one 295 or two 280s, the 280s were in the lead as they can be watercooled like my Ultras. Now I just wait some more.

that sucks dude, but the GTX will be worth the wait. Got a 280 myself and I can turn everything up. Even the ambient occlusion on the new 185 drivers can't slow it down. happy.gif

izzy eckerslike

A good way to see how many of your cores are used playing GTAIV is by checking the temps with 'Core temp' or similar

On mine cores 0 & 1 show higher temps than the other two if I drop to desktop to check during play, difference is around 6c

so it does point to the first two cores doing more of the work

Because Vista x64 rocks!

I never install XP crap on my lappie lol.

Btw, GTA4 already runs on Pentium 4.

Some pple are able to play the game on Pentium 4.
