Benedict101
Hello all, Recently installed GTA 4 on a brand new laptop, which (as far as I can tell) meets all requirements to run the game. It isn't a monster, but it'll do.. Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4ghz 4GB RAM Vista 32-bit NVidia Geforce 8600M GS 512mb Even with resolution set as low as possible, and with all sliders at their minimum, I'm lucky if I can average 3 or 4fps. I'm completely out of ideas. Any help would be much appreciated. Have tried numerous tweaks, none work. Even at 800x600, where the game looks worse than SA, nothing above 5fps. All drivers are updated as much as I can. Out of ideas. Many thanks
chngdman
Laptops are not for gaming. That video card is weak (comparable to early-7 series desktop video card). That processor is nice, but it does not operate efficiently for performcance, you lose performance due to its power efficiency and trying to conserve its energy, try setting to Presentation mode or "Always On", it can help sometimes. Vista is absolutely horrible. I get a good experience on XP, 30FPS and more, but on the same machine, I installed vista to test, and got 1-5 FPS. On a laptop, you can't expect vista to ever perform well until the very architecture this game is designed for is legacy No laptop meets requirements. There are no laptop hardwares on the GTA IV requirements, you see? Those are all desktop components, and they are considerably more powerful than those used for laptops. I hope this helps, especially the part about presentation/always on. Now, that's not to say you can't get it running a little better, nor is it to say there isn't someone out there with a 4000 dollar alienware notebook having a blast - it's just, it's not supported. Can I please have a link to your Laptop online? Edited January 17, 2009 by chngdman

chngdman
Yea, but also tell him don't bash his laptop, it's pretty awesome specs wise - way up there in terms of laptops, at least mostly. Let me suggest use your TV out and run the game at 640x480 (might need commandline), it will look like playing xbox or ps3 on a standard def tv, but I can almost assure you it will run better (SA and HL2 ran like sh*t on my old PC, ran AWESOME when I plugged into the TV, and I could push those up to 1024 through my Svideo, which looked ace on my TV, and highest settings, ran great, but maybe IV will bog you down too much if you go so high - give it a try anyway! That's damn near HD, and small res looks better on your TV (I mean, compared to on a LCD, not compared to a high res TV) And your chipset on that card is an 8 series, it just performs like an old card, thats all. It performs awesome for a laptop card, but it isn't for new games, it's for eating up and sh*tting out the older more casual/mainstream games you might take along on travel etc. Edited January 17, 2009 by chngdman
Benedict101
The laptop was a custom build.. What you're all saying does seem to mirror my fears, and also responses on other forums I've tried. Ah well, will have to be GTA:IV-less, all the money went on this laptop, and I need it for work, certainly no money left for a monster of an Alienware.. *sigh*
