ret7772u
I started playing GTA4 on my Nvidia BFG8800GTS OC 320Mb card .. The game ran smoothly & looked nice but I was concerned that I wasn't gettting the full splendor of the graphics so I bought a 1Gb Radeon HD4850 card thinking it would improve the look by having more available VRAM. It's beginning to look like a TERRIBLE mistake!! I cannot play the game with the ATI card .. the shadows are soooo blotchy & distorted that I can barely make out the rest of the scene. I tried new drivers & a thousand different in game settings to no avail. I'm real disgusted at this point because I will have to put my old 8800GTS back in to finish this game! If someone can tell me how to capture & upload a screenshot - I'd appreciate it. And if anyone else has this prob or a solution to it-- I'd like to know. BullsEyeBob
Upgrading your PC to play this piece of sh!t game was a HUGE mistake. So you have two options. One, return the card if you can or, two, keep that new card and go enjoy other games that actually work and look good. ret7772u
It's true that all my other games run great on the new ATI card - I upgraded because the 320Mb on my old nvidia card was starting to look weak compared to most standard configs on the cards today. I just can't believe that no one has fix for this problem .......... ARRRGGHHHHH!!! rud
hehe, suddenly an Nvidia user is paying attention to what all of us poor ATI folks have been saying all along! Seriously though, what can be said. You had a good card, now you've got a monster card, unfortunately GTA IV needs a card designed and built by gnomes. I'm sure everything else you play will make the upgrade worth it. chngdman
Runs and looks great on my HD3850. Maybe you should try a new card, maybe yours is bad or something? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/392795-ati-frustration/#findComment-1058887118 Share on other sites
AusCleaver
I had the same issues using a 4870 card. A week or so ago I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows and all the updates for my hardware - the game now looks great but freezes up after a few minutes, compared to not being able to play at all this is a major improvement. Have to wonder if its all the system software clogging it up. Try unistalling drivers, Net framework, Flash and anything else that the game might use and reinstall. chngdman
Hey, if it is a Sapphire card, it turns out that not only are there hotfix drivers specifically for that card, but there is also a modded bios that is supported and released by the company (will not void warranty) do some googles, check it out! Maybe you just need the bios, or even better, just the hotfix drivers! zolmaster
If you are having texture problems, try closing the CCC process in windows and see how it runs. I did and it runs better on my pc Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/392795-ati-frustration/#findComment-1058888796 Share on other sites
ret7772u
What a crock...put my 8800GTS back in & the game runs smooth a silk -- just gotta run it at medium settings - I'm truely pissed about this - ATI has screwed me big time -- I bought the 9700Pro when it came out--first DX9 video card & it worked great -- but this 4850 is really a disppointment...sigh Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/392795-ati-frustration/#findComment-1058896664 Share on other sites
tttt
ATI is not to blame, you'll see that in all other games, the HD 4850 or 4870 are great cards. It's just that GTA 4 is buggy as hell. Blame Rockstar on their alpha quality product. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/392795-ati-frustration/#findComment-1058897003 Share on other sites

ret7772u
Well...I have to believe that if Nvidia can produce drivers that work great on GTA4; ATI should be able to do the same - regardless of how 'buggy' people say the game is. I never had any probs till I tried to play it with the ATI card. Lol... I didn't even know it was considered buggy or bad or whatever because it ran fine right out of the box for me - I just wanted a lil higher detail .. not a self-sacrifice!
