Originalprey1
Hello fine people. Well I've been struggling with this game on my machine for a while now, but just when I was about to give up on it completely I decided to try one last thing. But instead of buying new memory I simply inserted a Sony 4GB MicroVault Classic USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Vista Readyboost enabled) into my machine and ever since then my game has literally taken off performance wise. No longer does it stutter along, have textures completely vanish into thin air or suddenly become annoyingly sluggish at random intervals. Now all I have is consistent enjoyable frame rates. And about sodding time too. No doubt some of you think this is bull, but trust me I've been reading this folder for ages now and not a single thing I tried helped me at all. But this did, 100%. I hardly have an uber system either compared to many on here: Core 2 Duo E6550 2.3 GHZ Powercolor HD 3870 XT Extreme 512MB 2GB Kingston DDR2 PC-6400 RAM Abit IP35-E Mobo SB Audigy 2 ZS WD 500GB 7200 rpm HDD Vista Home Premium 32bit SP1 Catalyst 8.12 graphic drivers Before I enabled readyboost I used to get the disappearing textures constantly after a certain amount of time, but no longer. So I'm assuming allowing the game that added cache boost has made a difference. For those who still doubt my words however here's a small video I made just a few hours ago of my machine running GTA IV PC at the following settings: Resolution: 1280 by 960 @ 16:10 (1400 by 900 is my native res but the lower res is what I've got used to using due to said previous poor performance) Textures: Medium Render Quality: High View Distance: 1 Detail Quality 30 Traffic Density: 30 Shadow Density: 0 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=V79u9sCQXwY (Be sure to select high quality) I keep reading everywhere that Vista Readyboost does absolutely nothing, but it has actually helped me more than I could say. I just hope this may help others who suffered in silence like I did. So if you are low on cash as I was and can't currently afford to add more RAM to your machine, pick up a cheap (but reliable) flash drive and get that sucker shoved in instead. It was well worth the £11 I paid that's for damn sure. Thanks for listening all.
chngdman
Cool, so that means people with multiple drives can put their page file on the other hard drive and get that effect too If you have a second HDD, might want to do that, that USB will fry if you use it too long! Originalprey1
I only have the one HDD. So I guess it's gonna have to fry. Incidentally, I know the fps in the vid looks choppy at times but I can honestly say that's all down to fraps and nothing else.
kikoo61
I have same CPU and ATI HD3870 512MB and game is shuttering for me after 5 mins. , Do you think that this will help me ?
Originalprey1
That's the very reason I posted mate. I tried everything I could prior to using the 4GB drive (with the exception of file tampering as I don't like doing that). It's like playing a completely different game now so the thing is if it worked for me I don't see why it can't work for others like yourself too. Originalprey1
You are welcome mate. Btw, I decided to try and hike my res up to it's normal native values and was pleasantly surprised that the game still runs just as good... I think my own GTA IV PC woes are at long last finally over. I just pray and hope the rest of you guys experience it soon also.
ArecBalrin
I don't know if it's because of the way YouTube compiles video files, but I find your frame-rate disturbing.
FadewoodArts
Ive been running GTA4 on my XP Pro SP3 Machine and ever since the latest nvidia drivers 181.20 I have had no framerate problems and no hiccups at all. I do get an occasional lock up during mission changes.. Im not sure what is causing that, because that wasn't happening before. Before that I had hardcore hiccups, loss of graphics, objects, and constant lagging while driving long distances. Im eager to try out your solution on my new laptop. I just installed Windows 7 and Vista 32bit and dual booted them, I will test GTA on both. I just got a 4gig thumb drive for xmas, I hope it has Readyboost capabilities. Any fps issues evident in the video are purely down to me recording the game using fraps. The game itself (when not recording) is ultra smooth believe me. Kurgen
I think I cracked it, Using Vista Readyboost Helped Me It's great to hear that someone has managed to improve their experience of this game, and doubtless it will feel even better for them when they themselves have done the work, but... you know what's coming, don't you? Why the fck are people feeling like they should celebrate the fact that they managed to squeeze an extra 5fps, by employing 3rd-party fixes, tweaks and workarounds? This is obviously a rhetorical question, but grating nonetheless, and more telling than if someone simply came out and said "Why do we even have to do this sh!t?!?" Yours, ever cynical (and still not playing it), Kurgen.

What the hell are you talking about man, NO! Readyboost is a completely different USB memory extension and the access time etc. works differently than a HDD and it is faster. HDD paging makes NO difference.

nicotin3
You could have gotten more ram? 2 GB + Vista = piss poor gaming performance . I know how this game runs with only 2 GB... or should i say... tries to run lol.

ArecBalrin
It's time to end this once and for all. What many of you don't know is that I am actually a very wealthy diamond salesman, who is very good at it. Unfortunately my prowess as a businessman does not extend to myself as as a frugal spender. In fact, I am a failed consumer. I literally throw money away. I will pay one-million dollars to the first plebian that gets GTA IV to run as it should. Failed applicants will be shot. This should put a stop to the excessive "I fixed it!" threads that over-celebrate the minimal gains for immense effort.
Originalprey1
I see nothing wrong with being happy that something I attempted helped me finally get some enjoyment out of a game, especially one that's as technicallly plagued as this one is. I never stated nor celebrated the fact my fps suddenly jumped up by 50fps. It simply went from partially unplayable to more than playable. Of course I will never forget it's been such a poor show on Rockstar's part, or that I should never have had to mess about in the first place. If you guys think posting up something that could well help others out is wrong, then I can live with that. I just fail to see what it has to do with anyone who just wants to slam Rockstar until all light departs this world regardless of what helpful advancements are made by the community at large.
