Is this the perfect gfx card for GTA IV?

Well i've been looking and hopefully by this weekend i will get the upgrades i need in order to play GTA IV. One question, is this a good card? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1217029964973 I need answers! Thanks! Another thing is that i heard they are pretty big cards and for some cases it won't fit. Do you think it will fit in my Dell Dimension E520 case?

EDIT: My specs are:

Intel core 2 duo 2.13 ghz

Windows Vista 32 bit

3gb 667 mhz DDR2 ram

and a 305W power supply.

I'm also getting a new power supply. It read i need 2 6 pin connectors? Does that come with a new power supply or something? Thanks.

Well, certainly its a good card, considering your rig (C2D, 667 ram) , but i dont think its "the perfect gfx card for GTA 4", a high end 1 gb VRAM GPU would run the game much better of course , like the GTX 280 / GTX 285.

Don't buy hardware from Best Buy. Also don't buy PNY products. They claim their products have a lifetime warranty when in fact their lifetime warranty means when they stop making the product. Sometimes that can be as little as 3-4 months.

Here is the same card for cheaper with a true lifetime warranty. Just be sure to register it online at the EVGA website within 30 days after you purchase it! If you don't it defaults to a 1 year warranty.

EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB

$175.00 or $155.00 after mail in rebate. Plus you get a free copy of Call of Duty World At War if that's your thing.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130416

Measure your case and compare it with the specs from the Newegg website. The 9800GTX+ isn't that long so I feel it should be fine.

Your processor will bog down the graphics cards power and you have way to low of a power supply you need at least a 450W for that thing

Hm... you're right I didn't even see that. 300w is not enough.

Firstly... The topic of this thred is BS.

Of course this is not the best card for GTA:IV...

Lest you forget... this game is for NEXT GEN PC's... only after they make Quad Core GPU Cards will this game run at full spec.

At the same time... i got one, i gotta better setup than you... no matter what... ur gonna have issues graphically with this game.

In regards to other games... FARCRY 2 running @ Ultra Quality (1680 x 1080) = 35+ Frames all the time.

UT3 = 70-80+ FPS constant.

But that is with my setup (in sig)

A 9800GTX for 220 bucks? Wow, that's a ripoff.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814131140

Performs a lot better while being noticeably cheaper

not to mention full DX10.1 support. I've got the HD3850 - it's less than half the 4870 price (in PCIe version, agp is 150 bucks) and outperforms nvidia's whole 9 series as well (unless my buddies rig is whack, and all of his other specs outweigh mine, quite heavily actually). And has the 10.1 smile.gif

I don't want to start a brand war, but that's BS icon13.gif

9800GTX and the 9800GX2 would kick the HD3850's @$$ anyday!

No wars, I'm a Nvidia man myself - only got this card because it is my last AGP card - and eats my buddy's 9800 alive...\

Do YOU have the 9800? Let's bench against each other then sly.gif (nah, that wouldn't be realistic, too many components to consider tounge.gif lol and you're probably him anyway sly.gif lolol)

Do you think it will fit in my Dell Dimension E520 case?

Beware... Dell have a rather annoying habit of populating the area around the graphics card slot with skyscraper capacitors, severely limiting any graphics card beyond the most basic, and two-slot cards are almost certain to never fit in. Obviously this depends on the individual motherboard, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up.

Bastards do it so they can help lock you into dell-certified upgrades only.

But, check dell for what they have - if they have it for your PC, it will fit even if you buy it elsewhere (cause it will be cheaper). As long as you meet those dimensions, or match the exact card itself, you should be fine.

Check the specs on the size/dimensions of the card, bust out a tape measure wink.gif

And 4870 really really is a better decision right now, seriously. And I'm an nvidia guy, as stated, but that card is really fast at dx9 and has full dx10.1 and ATI stream and whole host of other features that were just enabled or being enabled soon. My HD3850 has 320 stream processors. I guess there's only like 5 games really using it right now, and I don;t know how many the 4870 has, I think it's the same, but compare all specifications. And remember, ATI cards are made to be overclocked with a dynamic overclocking tool (overdrive) built in - I'm an nvidia guy, and switching brands temporarily until my next mobo was hard (both emotionally, and figuring out my new card), but it was well worth it (but again, it saved my mobo and was agp, so your choice will have different options to consider).

Thanks for all the replys. Im upgrading from 7300 GS So it will be a big improvement for me. I looked at the motherboard, i think it i can make the card sandwitch between my wireless card. There's a big cap between the two so we will see when the time comes. Thanks! Have a good day.

i don't really see stream as an advantage for the 4870 unless you like converting HD video formats tbh.

Yeah, it is a rip off. I bought the 1GB version of that GPU at Newegg for 60 dollars less. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814187029 The card in the picture isn't the one I got though. It looks like a water cooled model. I assume thats what the copper tubing is for. The price went down 5 dollars since I bought it a week and a half ago.

This is exactly why electronic retail stores are struggling to stay in business.

Firstly, ignore nynth.plague, he's obviously too up his own backside to give CONSTRUCTIVE ideas. You do not need a quad core processor to run GTA well, i have an Athlon X2 6000 and run absolutely fine and dandy, I would advise you against getting that card to run GTA simply because, for its power, it has little VRAM, and thats pretty much all GTA4 cares about.

I have a 8800GT 512, which that card would absolutely kill, but because they both have the same VRAM, you would not be allowed to run GTA4 at any higher settings than me, consider getting a 8800GT 1GB or a 9800GT 1gb if you can afford the stretch. Oh, and a minor thing about what antother of them said up there, GTA DOES NOT USE DX10 or any form of it, else it would have had anti-aliasing. Google the interview with the press that R* has about graphics in GTA and they expressly say that they dont use AA

now this, is a serious graphics card! wow.gif

It is indeed, and you get the added benefit of being able to switch off your house's central heating. wink.gif

Seriously, the heat this card pumps out the back vents, even just sitting at the Windows desktop, is ridiculous. ...and don't even think about touching the RAM heatsinks after a gaming session! It runs stupendously hot, as you would expect from two (currently) top-of-the-line cards being jimmied-together on the one unit.

Ok i bought a 650 watt power supply and a BFG. The power supply fitted fine, but the Nvidia 9800 GTX card has some fitting issues... I can make it fit, but i would have to remove the fan and place it below or make some air scoop out of it, and i would have to take a saw and trim off the venting part so that way there is only 1 hanger part. How my motherboard is setup its like this

PCI-e

square thing

PCI

PCI

Because of that, i would have to trim this |

| so it's like this | and take the fan off and place it somewhere below the card. If i did that, what would be the risks?
