GTA4 stopped working altogether

OK here's a bit of a weird one. GTA4 was working fine. I was able to play it with no problems for about a month. So I tried some of the Alice mods and one of them was too much for it and so it crashed. So I tried removing the mod and Alice and that didn't seem to work. It just wouldn't get past the main menu and would crash while loading. Now I've reinstalled the game, uninstalled it and reinstalled it, defragged the drive then reinstalled it, and almost every other combination of that with no luck. I keep getting this error.

The instruction at "0x0041f88f" referenced memory at "0x0ce1760". The memory could not be written. I get this crash every time I try loading the game past the main menu. The reference memory location is always different but the instruction location is always "0x0041f88f".

I'm running a retail copy of GTA 4 on Win XP SP3, 2x EVGA 8800 GTS 512 in Sli, and 2GB DDR2 ram. Like I said it was working fine and now nothing wants to work. I'm at a loss of what could be wrong. I've uninstalled the game numerous times, and reinstalled almost every component that I thought might effect it (direct x, graphic drivers, windows live, .net, RSSC, etc.)

Here's my dxdiag (processor is overclocked to 3.7GHz):

And the debug file from the crashed program dialog.

I haven't changed anything really. I had a problem with dbghelp.dll so I replaced that with a newer version. But it stopped working before I ever did that. It works fine in everything else I run (Spore, Crysis, etc.)

I got a hunch because some drivers are funny. I notice you using 180.84, just give 180.48 a try and tell me if it is the same, it might work for you.

Tried 181.20 and 180.48, still the same crash.

The instruction at "0x0041f88f" referenced memory at "some memory address". The memory could not be written.

The instruction is the same each time but the memory address is different. I have no idea what could be wrong. It's GTA4.exe that's crashing btw.

Still having the problem. I've tried reinstalling the graphics drivers, direct x, .net, C++, the game (numerous times), repairing the game (a few times), and still no change. I don't understand why it would all of a sudden stop working completely. Help please.

You tried taking it out of sli mode, did you remove everything, including anything left behind after uninstalling it...

this error is normally a program fault, when it tries to ask for memory that some other program owns or the program is trying to use the

memory before it successfully requests it...

also can be caused by software you installed...

the simple way of fixing this which I don't think you have as an option now, would of been to do a system restore

Hi! I'm new.

The thing is I've the same problem with the instruction 0x0041f88f. When I start the game, when it's loading whit the characters, the game crashes and says the same as above.

I've a INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8400 3.0GHZ - 2GB RAM DDR2 800MHZ - nVIDIA NX8800GT 512 MB so I think it should work fine.

I post this so LOKIOLR doesn't feel the only one with this problem wink.gif

PLEASE HELP I COULDN'T EVEN PLAY FIVE MINUTES!!!!

PD: I've a "non original version of the game" because in my country (Argentina) the game isn't aviable yet.

I have been playing GTA4 on steam with no problems since it was released for PC. Then a couple of days ago upon completing a mission where Michelle says shes working for the government, the picture froze and the sound continued. From then it would hang the game and after a hard reboot would not get past the intro credits screen. Following a manual installation of the just released patch the game completely refuses to launch and no error is given. Have verified game cache and fragmentation was not required. All my drivers are up to date. No other apps running on pc. No hardware or software changes were recently made, problem occurred out of the blue.

Running:

AMD Athlon 64x2 CPU 5000+ 2.61GHZ

ASUS M2NPV-VM M/Board PCI-E

4GB DDR2 RAM

ATI Radeon HD4850 GPU 1GB

Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro

Vista Ultimate 64

Don’t really want to try a complete reinstall as the 15gb download would cost me a month and a half worth of my download allocation.

Any suggestions Rockstar?

Thanks

Thank you all
