Nomad91
Hey guys, I just got my Q6600 in the mail yesterday and have been testing it for you guys to know what's it's like. As soon as I got it, I ripped my P4 out, and threw my new shiny quad in. I booted up GTA IV, and procedded to change my settings: View Distance-35 Detail Distance-50 Texture Quality-Medium Render Quality-Highest Traffic Density-70 I first played in SP, creating a massive bus bomb and detonating 12 cars (Yes I fianlly got that achievement!) I got a 3 star because one of those victims was a cop car. I proceeded to fire upon running civilians and the approaching police, I fired my RPG, which toppled a cop car, smashing a handful of peds. I kept watching fraps and kept raising the body count, and the number only dipped down to 23 once when I blew up a Noose patriot roadblock and a heli's rotor hit the bridge and it fell. I know this is rough, but I will post my actual benchmark tomorrow. Check sig for rig details. I am open for an questions in the next hour, but I pose my own, Can anyone direct me to software where I can monitor my CPU temps while under load, like NVmoitor except for a GPU. Also, how do I go about overclocking my CPU, do I adjust the values in my bios? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/391389-q6600-and-9800gt/ Share on other sites
mr_munch
for temps i use coretemp program im sure you'll find it through google, also check what motherboard you got and look up on all the information on what it can overclock too, like the front side bus on mine will do 1333mhz but my cpu is a 1066mhz like urs the q6600. also raise your voltage on the cpu to say about 1.4-ish dont go over 3ghz if u have a standard cpu heatsink and fan or ur system will be very unstable. if ur cores are around 68 degrees then thats too much u want about a nice 55 degrees max on full load. mr_munch
yes you can, tho the way i clocked my cpu with the PN5-5 mobo was raise the voltage and keep the mutilpier at 9x. also my FSB to 1333mhz sorry i miss read no you can not raise ur mutiplier but u can get it up to 3ghz. Dave365
Good news on the improvements with the upgrade. Speed Fan is a nifty free utility that should be in a tweakers toolkit. It can read temps and help you play with fan settings. Not the most user friendly but the price is right and it works decent. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php Oddly laid out site, just look for the Download box near the top and go nuts. Coldkilla
Whats a good "load" temperature to keep the CPU under when overclocking? I too have a q6600. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/391389-q6600-and-9800gt/#findComment-1058864783 Share on other sites
OabAli
Is ur 9800 GT the 1 GB VRAM version? What resolution do you play the game? Shadow Density? (this brings down framerates by up to 6 FPS for me, from level 0 to 2) My specs are sorta similar to urs (see below). I can't really increase my view distance too much because 512 MB VRAM and game slows down. I get framerates ranging from 20 - 35 FPS, depending on location and situation. Coldkilla
That sounds good, I hope overclocking from 2.4 to something like 3.0 will give me some better performance. What program can do this? Or is it just done in BIOs? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/391389-q6600-and-9800gt/#findComment-1058864873 Share on other sites

Keep it below 75c and you're fine. If you are using the stock Intel heat sink and fan don't bother trying to overclock it. You can run these CPU's pretty high but you need to be able to dissipate the heat and Intel's stock HSF just doesn't cut it. Nomad91
Ok, I overclocked my Q6600 to 3.0Ghz, and at load (using Nvidia system stability test, only CPU checked) it runs at about 58-69C at 100% load, the problem is, the fan sounds like a f*cking leafblower! Would overclocking to just 2.8Ghz yield better results from stock, but less temps and fan noise? Also, to the people asking, my 9800GT is the 512MB DDR3 Version With that guy who overclocked his 9800GT and got less frames, try playing with the clock speeds a bit, I got that too, but I moved the speeds a few Mhz and got improvement. Nomad91
Here is the benchmark as promised! Statistics Average FPS: 55.94 Duration: 37.09 sec CPU Usage: 67% System memory usage: 84% Video memory usage: 98% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1440 x 900 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Very High View Distance: 35 Detail Distance: 40 Hardware Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Video Driver version: 185.20 Audio Adapter: Realtek HD Audio output Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz File ID: Benchmark.cli Note:Thew Q6600 is Oc'd to 3.0Ghz, but it shows up as 2.4Ghz, and traffic density is 65, but I don't think it plays a role in the benchmark. OC'd worked great guys, idles at 35C and under load 50-55C on all cores Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/391389-q6600-and-9800gt/#findComment-1058869402 Share on other sites
