Their armour is primitive and so are their weapons. The United States very much has the capabilities to save each and every military person almost surely indefinitely from death in warfare; if they so chose to do so—it'd just be more costly. Simple alone, fully-body carbon nano fibre constructed suits would be almost 100% impervious to all current non-explosive weaponry US forces at are war with. Also, that movie may have been grossly inaccurate, however, I was under the impression that military equipment is designed specifically to endure EMPs. You're not realizing how much the military has invested in R&D making new weapons and armor; they're still using a lot of the old equipment because it's tried and true. Like the M16 design which simply led to the improved M4; eventually we'll find something radically different that will be better, but for the time being it's the most reliable and economic weapon for them, which is why it's the general issue. In all reality, the U.S. military has so much sh*t on the back-burner it's scary. In fact, it scares me, and makes me wonder what exactly they're "getting ready" for. Chinese occupation of tibet, civil war in the Ivory Coast/Sri Lanka/Somalia/Sudan/N.Ireland/Chechnya, UN peacekeeping occupation in Cyprus/Balkans, etc, etc. Regarding clash of the titan sort of wars, there are a few potential flashpoints to look out for. There are obvious ones: Iran Vs USA (or the West in general); Pakistan Vs India (over the Kashmir region); N.Korea Vs S.Korea/USA (although I understand there have been positive steps towards resolution). All of these wars could potentially be quite devastating, especially since Iran, Pakistan, India and N.Korea are, or are becoming, nuclear powers. Aside from that, you can expect oodles of smaller conflicts to erupt here and there. I expect Israel will war with the Palestinians for the foreseeable future, and you may (again) see other Arab states get involved. The West may in a few years push UN or national troops into Africa in various interventions/peacekeeping roles. Russia will continue to have spats with its ex-Soviet neighbours - Georgia being the most recent one. That's to name just a few... You can expect continued intra-state conflict in nearly all regions of the world. One of the biggest developments to look out for is population growth in the third world nations and the flow of people towards Europe and the West.
