Thursday's reports in several newspapers, including the Kargozaran, say 27-year-old Majid confessed to attacking Ameneh Bahrami in 2004 to dissuade anyone from marrying the woman he loved. Wednesday's ruling was issued based on the Islamic law system of ''qisas,'' or eye for an eye retribution. The reports say Ameneh asked the court to sentence Majid, who was only identified by his first name, to be blinded by acid to prevent similar attacks on other women. And this system called "Talion" (Latin: legea talionului) was widely used couple of thousands of years B.C. It vanished completely in the medieval period and it was only used in some countries against slaves. It's rather primitive if you ask me. But who are we to judge their laws. The punishment for rape in Islam is the same as the punishment for zina (adultery or fornication), which is stoning if the perpetrator is married, and one hundred lashes and banishment for one year if he is not married. and the judge also has these choices: they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. Yeah, sounds fair enough.Though I'm not sure if I'll say the same 'bout executions.It just seems too harsh. Edit- @above: Stoning has been outlawed in Iran.I'm pretty sure the only options in the judge's hand is to command lashing the culprit, or ultimately execution. I don't think I can think of anything more justifiable than that. If only they would have this type of justice in Western countries like Australia; it could possibly weed out all the bad, rebellious teenagers which sh*t up the whole country with their parties and fights and sh*t.
