GTAIV-Is-Crap
So I did a full system upgrade, it was on the cards for a while, did not upgrade my cpu for the past three years (or so) on one of my systems. I did not upgrade because of GTA, but it was interesting to see the results. Before the upgrade. Statistics Average FPS: 18.33 Duration: 37.43 sec CPU Usage: 80% System memory usage: 89% Video memory usage: 97% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Medium View Distance: 30 Detail Distance: 32 Hardware Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Video Driver version: 178.24 Audio Adapter: SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [A000] AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ But don't take above as the way the game played, I was only ever getting 1-4 FPS in the game itself (if that sometimes) as well as the usual lockups, lock-outs and crashes. New system. Statistics Average FPS: 34.30 Duration: 37.23 sec CPU Usage: 79% System memory usage: 73% Video memory usage: 83% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: High Render Quality: High View Distance: 32 Detail Distance: 70 Hardware Microsoft® Windows Vista" Home Premium Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 Video Driver version: 180.48 Audio Adapter: Speakers (Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (WDM)) Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz But please don't take above as my in game play either, as I'm still getting 1-5 FPS. The only thing I could think of was the sound card, as that's the only bit of oldish hardware I carried across from my old system. With that in mind, I did use the on-board sound at the start with no change. Plus now I'm getting a few extra bugs, like controller working for 1 minute and then going off, as the car and player goes round and round (only a total game exit will sort it) Like I said, I did not build the new system to play GTA, but it was interesting to note, I have better and more stable games to play on my system, COD5, GRID, oh and just about every other f*cking game I own and have installed on the new system without a worry. RockStar - I like many of my gaming friends have supported you from the days of 2D, I was not a big fan of GTA: SA, but even it had its graphic issues. GTA IV is a mess, its a mess and you lied about the 1%, you lied because you know its a mess and your f*cking embarrassed and worried about future sales. You should be embarrassed and worried, I know lots of people who won't be buying your next game, in fact, it all I hear from my gaming friends. You have created some anger out there and the sad thing is, you resulted to trying to lie about it. This was the worst thing you could have done. Your game is a port, dragged over, it seems, from the xbox. It does not even perform right on the main menu screen and this is testament to who you are as a company. Questions for RockStar: Why does the benchmark tool read 30+ FPS and in game you only get 1-5? Why does it run like 1-5 FPS on the main menu screen, before the game is even loaded up? Why so many bugs? (you made history with this one alright) Why did you lie about the 1% (why not just tell the truth and then go on to sort things out) Yes I paid for the game, I have the right for my questions to be answered. GTAIV-Is-Crap
One more question R* How long does it take to fix a joypad bug?! Or would that mean coding and not just porting. for you.
Lastsource
The GTA IV game is not about being Niko Bellic in Liberty City and enjoying a nice virtual reality, it is about getting some beta version of a game tech demo to run on your own pc with more than 40 fps, no stuttering and no crashes. If you reach that, than you mastered GTA IV. And as with every good game it comes not with a walk through guide, so what all the settings and tweaks do is left for you to find out. Enjoy! Btw. R* did not lie, when they said only 1% of their customers have a problem with the game. It is true, 1% off their customers didn't get the real game going and just wander around liberty city as Niko Bellic. 99% of their customers are playing the game the way it was meant to be played in the sense of "do get this files to run smooth", tweaking their hardware and every possible commandline.txt setting. All perfect. Edited January 9, 2009 by Lastsource
tigerx
that's messed up man, i upgraded mine too, and i have a much less powerful system then yours but in benchmark i get around 48FPS. try lowering your detail quality. my spec: -Q6700 2.66GHZ -4GB Corsair XMS2 -8800GT 512MB -vista ultimate x64 bench: Statistics Average FPS: 48.31 Duration: 37.15 sec CPU Usage: 88% System memory usage: 50% Video memory usage: 88% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1024 x 768 (75 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Very High View Distance: 35 Detail Distance: 40 Hardware Microsoft® Windows Vista" Ultimate Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Video Driver version: 181.00 Audio Adapter: Speakers (SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio) Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz i've already finish the game 3 times, and it play awesomely even during tense firefight
Rockstar Toronto
Questions for RockStar: Why does the benchmark tool read 30+ FPS and in game you only get 1-5? (you made history with this one alright) Why did you lie about the 1% (why not just tell the truth and then go on to sort things out) Yes I paid for the game, I have the right for my questions to be answered. The game should run much better than 1-5 fps with the hardware you listed. If you want some troubleshooting help please send us a DXDIAG of your system as well as a screen shot of your system processes and we will try and determine what is going on. As you can see from the post above the game does work! As for the infamous "1%" quote, please read the entire quote from the IGN interview that was done less than a week after release. Keep in mind this is a journalist asking a programmer for an answer. IGN: Just to start out could you give us a sense of how widespread the problem actually is because it's difficult to tell from looking at message boards. R* TO: I guess that's really hard to determine. The only thing we really have to go on in that regard is support calls we've been getting which have been quite low or as expected, which I think is roughly around one percent…It seems like maybe these forum posters are the more outspoken percentage of the players. That's really the only thing we have to go on as far as numbers go. Regardless of the percentages, we are continuing to work to make the game work as intended for as many system configurations as possible.

I have emailed support and have a live ticket, its been back and forward now for a week, with nothing helping me. What about the joypad? a month after the game is out and people can't play it with their own joypads?
DRMetzger
OP, you get additional frames without detail distance at 70 seeing as how your previous bench was at 32? What does it look like with the same settings as your other benchmark? I guess it might not even matter since your draw distance is much lower than detail but it is probably worth a shot. Rockstar Toronto
Your pad will be supported as soon as possible. Out of the box we only supported the Microsoft XInput controllers, with Patch 1 we implemented Direct Input support but there is a bug in the pad recognition system. I apologize for the error. FRAGEYE
What about the joypad? a month after the game is out and people can't play it with their own joypads? It is possible with the tweaks and 360pad emulation. I have a generic usb pad what didn't work till i put two files into gta 4 directory and now it works fine ! Have you tried it ? Romanian_guy
Dear ROCKSTARS TORONTO, I'm representing a large Romanian team of gamers that would like to express they'r feelings about GTA4 and all the gta series. We all bought and played gta, we are borned with GTA, we eat GTA on bread . We were very, BUT VERY upsset with this last title. The game performs awesome on consoles and we noticed and understand the differences bethween PC and CONSOLE and there's a HUGE notable diference !!! We love, like, play, admire this last version, gta4, and we thank your for the proffesionism you have prooven ! We are sad because of the performance, most of us bought Nvidia 8600GT or 8800gt for a maximum experience in this game but it's not enough. Most of us denied the game and we will buy this when a regular patch is OUT ! I think you can meet with this situation in many places on Earth where gamers are, it's something to expect especially from a MOJORITY ! We will buy the game and The sales number will increase IF this game will perform better on the requiered sistem you initially said. I'm deeply sorry ! I and we all LOVE this GTA4. Great job, great sounds, story, great graphics and we WILL BUY THIS AS SOON AS A PERFORMANCE PATCH IS OUT AND THE DIFFERENCES ARE BIG ! WE WILL ! Have a nice day !!! ArecBalrin
Seeing as R* Toronto seems to be giving this particular thread a lot of attention, can it yet be confirmed that a significant performance patch is in the works? For the life of me, I've yet to see any explicit indication that the game will see one.
