emorgen86
First off my specs are: Intel quad core q6600 2gigs pc5600 nvidia geforce 9800 gtx+ vista sp1 My issue is that the game crashes to desktop with no error messages about 10 seconds into the game when looking at the menu. I've tried many combinations of commandline.txt to limit the restrictions on mem, and even tried other configurations to set the available memory. Basically any commandline.txt command I've tried. The only thing I've been able to figure out is that if I run the game, or even change my desktop resolution to anything but 1050x1680, it crashes after the second Rockstar logo when the game boots up. Any help or suggestions would be awesome. I've been talking with Rockstar support for over a week now and they have really let me down with their help. I am out of ideas. Thanks in advance. -Eric

anus
Try playing without any commands (no commandline.txt file). If that doesn't work, try uninstalling your drivers and run DriverCleaner in Safe Mode and then install the 185.20 drivers.

spemux
I was having exactly same problem but my pc was crashing entirely. sometimes infinite loop blue screen was appearing after game crashes or screen says "no signal" or pc resets itself if you set "enable cpu recover" in ctalyst. I've changed my PSU to 550W Corsair and MOBO to asus. No more problems. I had some default acer PSU which was lower and MSI motherboard. Now the games runs awesome even with my ATI Radeon HD 3650 3d club Edited January 9, 2009 by spemux

I have tried it without anything in the commandline.txt still does not work. Also I just used driver sweeper in safemode and deleted all the nvidia drivers and installed the 185.20 drivers and got the same problem. i am having the same proble, i try to enter the game but when is in the first logo crash down and says me that windows stop working. i resolve it erasing my savegames y cracking again. I don't have any savegames, it has never worked for me. And I have the real game and I don't want to crack a game I bought. If that is guaranteed to work I'll try it, but I don't think that is the reason it crashes. was having exactly same problem but my pc was crashing entirely. sometimes infinite loop blue screen was appearing after game crashes or screen says "no signal" or pc resets itself if you set "enable cpu recover" in ctalyst. anus
So it works fine with 1050x1680 as the resolution? Try reinstalling DirectX from this link (DirectX 9.0C November 2008, the latest version AFAIK).
emorgen86
I just tried installing the direct x from your link and I still get the same problem. The game does not work in any resolution. However, in 1050x1680 it actually boots the menu before crashing. Other resolutions it crashes after the second R* logo.
D. Eiht
@kmil120 I just noticed that you OC'd your CPU... Well, I've done that for myself, that's not the problem - but - I just forgot to set the PCI-E frequency back to normal (100(M)Hz). That results into random crashes to desktop (at least for GTAIV), texture-loading problems (that "turn-around-textures-plop-up-thing") and less stability of the whole system. So, you might get it, take a trip to your BIOS and check if the PCI-E frequency is set to "100" or "Normal" but NOT "Auto" or something similar. Hope this helps! Edited January 9, 2009 by D. I never overclocked my CPU. Its 2.4GHZ pc6600 which is the default speed. I also checked my bios and there was no option to set the PCI-E frequency. thales100
K, you may have some conflict between some older nvidia driver files and the new 181.20 youre using now, so that is my suggestion : 1- Eliminate all overclocks you may be using (CPU and GPU). 2- Delete any commandline file you may be using. 3- Download a program called Driver Sweeper (youll find it at guru3d.com) 4- Download the latest WHQL nvidia drivers for your card - 181.20. 5- Install Driver Sweeper. 6- Uninstall your video driver (using control panel), then reboot. 7- Boot back to windows in safe mode, run Driver Sweeper and delete all entries , folders and files related to Nvidia and Ageia drivers. 8- Reboot again, boot back in normal mode. 9- Install the 181.20 driver for your GPU. Reboot again.
emorgen86
I've done this a few times, the most recent was today with the 185.20 drivers. My only question about this method is that windows installs a driver when it starts up before I install the latest ones. Is this causing a conflict? Otherwise this isn't the problem

emorgen86
I play crysis, call of duty 4, and left 4 dead at 1680x1050 on high settings with no problems. It's only this game
Rockstar Toronto
Some troubleshooting things to try: 1) Run the game with the "-safemode" command line 2) Reinstall Games for Windows - Live Redistributable 3) Run the game with your internet connection disabled
biggeo
This is new one. We have to install all the windows live and RSC stuff and then we have to disable internet connection? That mean no online gaming? Then why we need all above? Sorry, I am not trying to be cynic, just frustrated and disappointed here. Just yesterday after a month I finally manage to load the game, but with just 15 fps game is unplayable. After been a week with R* support, finally we found out that DRM was the problem. Game crashed cause DRM wasn't compatible with virtual drivers and a USB bluetooth dongle I use. Have to disable all virtual drives, shut down home network, just to make game load. And funny thing is, that TRIED AN ILLEGITIMATE copy of the game in a friends PC, bypassing DRM and RSC and windows live, and game load fine. Now what you suggest to me. To buy another game with DRM protection and lose virtual drives and network, or just download the game and play it? I like to support the work of others, I buy my games, but when games I bought give to me a headache, while all the others who just download it and bypass any protection can play it fine then I feel like victim to say the least. emorgen86
1) Run the game with the "-safemode" command line 2) Reinstall Games for Windows - Live Redistributable 3) Run the game with your internet connection disabled I have tried all of these before and nothing worked. I WAS ABLE TO FIX MY GAME THOUGH! I was using Vista SP1 before and I downloaded the Windows 7 beta version and upgraded my windows. I had already uninstalled GTA 4 prior to the upgrade. I set the compatability of the GTA 4 Setup to Windows XP service pack 2 and it let me install the game (to go around the compatibitlity %p error). Once I restarted my computer the game worked perfectly under Windows 7. This isn't exactly a solution since I have not be able to diagnose the problem. But I spent over 2 weeks trying different methods and over two weeks with 2kGames support and was getting no where. This also fixed my other issue which was that the game did not run in offline mode. Now the game works with my Rockstar social club account and I've had no issues. I hoped this helps people out. I'm glad after spending $50 on the game and close to $350 on upgrades I was able to get this game up and running. If anyone has questions for me feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

On box as requirements are: Windows VISTA SP1, or Windows XP SP3, you manage to run it on WindowsXP SP2 mode, wich means either the requirments are wrong, or something really wrong with the game. And consider that no one from R* support answer back, this game GTA IV for PC is "dead".
emorgen86
I'm not running the game in Windows Compatabitliy mode, I only set it to XP SP2 to install it. The only run option I choose is "run as administrator"

The only run option I choose is "run as administrator" That what I mean. You pretend like you run WindowsXP SP2. That what I mean compatibillity mode. But SP3 is required as game said. So something wrong with the game then, or R* did not know what the actuall requirments are.
