Proper Realistic Handling & Damage Mod for GTA IV

You must have aru's file modding ability patch to use this mod and any other mods! Back up your handling.dat before installing!

weird, someone removed my download link.

DOWNLOAD

I felt that both currently released "realistic" handling mods were quite poorly done. In one, the cars were far too fast and uncontrollable, and in the IRL handling mod, they just simply drove like sh*t. This mod is done to my tastes. If you don't like the damage values, fix them yourselves. If you find a bug or a glaring problem, please do tell me.

This mod extensively changes the handling characteristics of all the cars in GTA IV to be more realistic and enjoyable.

-All cars are more powerful, have less drag, and a higher top speed which is closer to reality, without being uncontrollable and burning out past 2nd gear.

-Suspension and traction values have been overhauled.

-The result is that cars have less ridiculous body roll, don't have go-kart corner response, and can't be rescued out of every slide.

-They're also more fun and balanced to drive, and easier to drift.

-Deformation has been increased drastically. You can't escape from a high speed crash with just a small dent anymore.

-Engine damage has also been increased, but it doesn't hinder gameplay.

-

The following cars have been made FWD that weren't before but should've been

-

Minivan

Cabby

Merit

Police2

Taxi2

Chavos

Ingot

Solair

Feroci

Perennial

-

UPDATE: Version 4, minor changes (mostly to SUVs)

UPDATE: Version 5, redownload

-Tweaked suspension so the cars feel heavier and more realistic, not as snappy.

-Motorcycles are now faster to match the cars.

-Moonbeam is RWD.

Oh no... yet another uncontrollable mod with keyboard sad.gif Just constant burnout, unable to corner, etc...

And the deformation is also way too much, the car are unuseable at the first small crash even...

that's not the fault of the mod, it's your fault for using a keyboard. Get the 360 controller for your pc, it's a good buy and it's much better to drive with.

btw i'm trying this mod as soon as i get home, cause i didn't like the other 2 handling mod either.

Yeah , that's why I love GTA4 original handling. After playing 2 weeks you drive (in GTA not RL lol) like biggest fan of racing games in the world.

I press D or A once and it makes a 190 degree turn. I wouldn't call that "proper realistic" handling. Else I'm screwed when I'll start driving!

Why can't someone design a mod like this which isn't useless to keyboard users? Its easy to say "Go buy a controller" when you already own one yourself buy don't be an ass to those who can't afford/don't want to buy one.

About f*cking time. Nice mod, pal.

The worst thing is that a lot of us already have controllers but they are incompatible with GTA4. Instead of making turn signal mods and handling mods, let's fix that primary issue first!

well, perhaps those who are spinning out should learn how to drive (or get a 360 controller)

just so you know: real cars can't swivel-snap back and forth sliding at high speed like they can in GTA4, so I tried to fix that. Sorry if you can't OMG DRIFT around every turn. Try doing that in the average car on the street in real life.

P.S. I increased grip on cars... try giving it less gas if you don't like sliding.

also, my mod isn't perfect or final, nor have I had the chance to thoroughly test every car. if there's a car that's driving badly, please tell me and i'll fix it.

edit: version 3 uploaded, please redownload

To the people that don't have any controllers: I would recommend you save up and get one. They are 30 dollars, just get the regular xbox 360 controller and download the drivers on the internet. It changes the entire feel of the game.

That said, I've been looking for a non-retarded driving mod. I'll try this out now and post my thoughts when I get back.

Edit: Okay, I just tried it out. I don't know how things work in real life, but I was driving around the comet and i was going super fast and I could hit things head at super fast speeds and i would kill the driver in the other car and i would think, man after a crash like that my car should be dead. But it kept running just fine. Oh well I will keep looking.

Dude, the Comet is rear engined...

also, I tried to keep the engine damage from being ridiculous. My Cavalcade still caught fire after a high speed head-on into a NOOSE truck.

in addition, there's a hard-coded thing in GTA 4 where the player car is ALWAYS heavier and takes less damage than other cars. It's very stupid and pointless.

I can fly into a pick up truck with my Sentinel and my Sentinel just slides right underneath.

I have a $300 controller but GTA won't let me use it.

What then? Is it fair I have to buy a Microsoft controller because Rockstar signed an exclusivity contract so their CEOs could afford that new private jet and luxury vacation?

Who the f*ck would spend that much on a controller in the first place?

It's a Logitech G25 racing wheel, one of the cheapest clutch+ H-shifter controllers on the market.

Mafia, a five years old game, lets me use this controller. GTA San Andreas, let's me use this controller. GTA IV won't less us use ANY controller besides the X360 one.

That is absolutely unfair.

Is that the one with the sweet ass 900 degree turning wheel thats made out of real metal and leather?

To Kitteh: I can literally scoop up pickup trucks with my Sentinel with your mod. I just fly into them at a high speed and the car slides right under it.

After playing with the other handling mods as well as RC4 for that other one, I'd have to say this one probably my favorite.

After playing around with the other mods for a bit and this one more and more, I'd have to say I prefer this much more than RC4, w/ or w/o the kb changs. I play with a controller, and this one i feel is more realistic driving.

DUDE, thanks so much. I've always wanted a handling mod for IV that made it as realistic and driving-sim like as possible and this seems to be it.

You planning on improving the mod in any way?

Will check it out when I get to my PC. THANKS again man.

This mod must kick some major ass with a wheel and pedals inlove.gif.

ground clearance, i am guessing.

force ground clearance, I think, prevents the underbody from hitting the floor that hard or at all after jumps or bumps. so when you hit a car's front or back end it will "bounce" off a bit and that way you can keep pushing it, making it go over your car.

just a guess, I've never really played around with GTA's ground clearance settings.

ground clearance is changed by the "raise" setting, I'll have to download it and take a look to see what might be causing it.
