Tornado Rex
So any word on how long the beta will last? I might get it to have a free copy of Windows on my computer. August 1st. My guess is they'll do a public RC before or near that though. ~ Proud Supporter of the Child's Play Charity! | GTANET + Child's Play ~
Andrew
Still waiting on the download to complete. But from the feature list and general look at it so far, I'm impressed and quite looking forward to trying it out. I've got two machines I'm going to try it out on. Main Machine 2.66 Core2Duo 4GB Memory 8800GT 512MB 250GB SATA HD Dev Machine 2.00ghz AMD Athlon (single core) 786MB Ram 8600 256MB 3 x 40GB IDE The Dev Machine runs XP alright, and has run vista before alright. Be intresting to see how Win7 runs on it.
Picolini
I'd like to know how W7 runs on a lower end system. I hear it does better than XP across the board, including low/lower end system. When my parents finally get a new PC I plan on checking it out on their old one, which is an old P4 @3.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, mobo graphics.
GammaRaptor
Im sure windows 7 when it comes out will feature a basic version of its operating system.
Waste
I have come to the conclusion that I don't like it at all. All the crap features I didn't like from Vista are mostly still there. Sure the performance is better, but I just can't get over the interface changes that they made in Vista and stuck with in 7. This is all not mentioning the fact that 7 has somehow managed to f*ck up my mouse settings in XP and I cannot get it to revert these changes even after 7 is gone off my hard drive. My mouse is far more sensitive now and it scrolls way too fast.
Edmachine
Damn! Seems, that I've downloaded a corrupt image. Can't extract from the .iso and every file is corrupted in the DVD. I hear it does better than XP across the board, including low/lower end system. When my parents finally get a new PC I plan on checking it out on their old one, which is an old P4 @3.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, mobo graphics. With the specs they listed as minimum for it, I was expecting to not even install on my computer.....but it did, and amazingly does run better and almost equal to XP on it. Specs are: Intel Celeron D 2.67 g 512 mgs RAM GeForce 5500 With 256 mgs RAM Onboard sound 80 gig HD (Old Western unit) Again - whatever they did to this OS, they finally got it right for us lower end PC owners. When ever they do release RC1 they should lower the min specs. Granted, it does bog down with WMP 12 or Media Center. Only situation where I've experienced lag. Office 2007 runs smoothly........I dare not try to game on it, though. Still uses too much RAM for that. Damn! Seems, that I've downloaded a corrupt image. Edmachine
Awesomeness! It runs! Quite smooth as well. One thing I hate though, is the big taskbar. I can't find a place to make it smaller, at least to XP size. It's large, takes up precious space which can be used for surfing the web, writing documents (so you see more), etc. What I REALLY like, is the (not-so-new) Start menu. I like how All Programs are made to fit in the Start menu it-self, rather than what was it like in XP, where it takes up the whole screen . More info from me to come . EDIT: Is it possible to make windows snap to screen edges like gadgets do (and WinAmp)? It would be really useful. XMike
Edmachine; right click on the taskbar, properties and then check use small icons and press okay. As for your other question, I don't understand exactly what you mean.
Sixdust
They are making this system so that it can even run on netbooks which are very low spec. I suspect that if some effort is put into it, maybe even Pentium 3 processors will support it.
Picolini
I keep talking myself out of buying a netbook in fear of owing way too much to Best Buy, but I definitely would try out 7 on one. @Edmachine, like Xmike said, use small icons. The task bar exactly the same height as Vista's. Not sure about XP, but probably the same as well.
Jim
As for your other question, I don't understand exactly what you mean. He wants to make it so the windows stick/automatically position themselves perfectly to the edge of the screen, like the widgets do. @Ed: As far as I know, that doesn't exist. If you have an NVIDIA card, I do know it's software has a feature like this. Though, I'm not sure if it'll be able to install on 7. I've already had software compatibility problems, when the software doesn't recognize the OS. It's worth a try though.
Edmachine
I already changed the icon size to small, did no change (except make the icons smaller, not the taskbar itself). I want it to be as small as Windows Classic Theme on XP. Well, I guess I'm not used to it yet. @Vicehog: I'll try that. Andrew
I got it installed, runs pretty good. I got one issue with it though and even the nvidia drivers haven't sorted it. I run in dual screen, with one 17" and a 15" monitor. The 15 only supports 1024X786. In dual screen mode with the resolution set to that, the monitor displays a out of range message. Yet downsize the resolution to 800X600 and it works. Thats my only problem so far. Haven't tested it on the lower spec machine, thats currently doing a windows server 2003 + exchange 2003 test duty. Not in Windows 7 yet, however I found a small program that can do it, link here. It's not perfect but it works.
Mo4pheus
If anyone's interested, i found out the problem with the sidebar (Or desktop gadgets)......If you completly Disable UAC - it nor the gadgets will work. Odd lil tidbit there, but if anyone is using em and decides to get rid of UAC, just remember that it will disable the gadgets as well.
Edmachine
@Picolini: Doesn't work. @XMike: Thanks, I'll try that. Even if it won't work on Windows 7, I'll use it in XP. BEFORE-POST-EDIT: Well, I'd much rather like to see the snapping effect before I release my mouse button (to see the outline snap). Beggars can't be choosers, I guess. EDIT: No, I don't like it . EDIT2: I did it in nView. Though, the same thing as with Snap. Drunk Russian 9
I can't get Daemon Tools Lite to install. Anyone have any suggestions?
Picolini
Take a screencap of your desktop Ed... don't know why you can't get it to the normal size. Look here, http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtop...st&p=1058868030 That's as small as it gets, which is the same size as Vista's and XP's. @Drunk Russian... did you try burning it? I tried mounting the old 6801 build version's ISO in Daemon tools to install, and it'd get to the restart point, restart then it wouldn't continue the installation. Best to just burn it. If that's not a possibility, then try using a USB stick over 2GB if you have one. I think you've got to put it on the stick in a special way, so I'd google it to find out how. Edmachine
No, I wanted it to be as small as this (http://s90.photobucket.com/albums/k269/Edmachine/?action=view¤t=desktop-2.png). You can clearly see the difference. Also, you misunderstood Drunk Russian. He meant, that he can't get the application it self to install. Drunk Russian, you should try to open the setup .exe using the compactability thing. I don't know how to do it in Win7, am not home at the moment, but it might be Right-click -> Properties -> Compactability. And why do you have a drive named dickbutt ? anus
I can't get Daemon Tools Lite to install. Anyone have any suggestions? Try running it in Windows XP SP2 compatibility. If that doesn't work, try MagicDisc. Its a free program which does everything that Daemon can do. Pretty small program too. Been using it for years now and love it . Picolini
@Ed, looks like at the MOST it's one or two pixels shorter than Vista or XP's task bar. Goes to show you how more efficiently they're using the space Enlarged to show the "difference" better. Oh, and the DICKBUTT thing is just a joke, really. OMG another one: Games for Windows - LIVE 2.0 Setup can't install. No problem . For GFWL, try installing the version from the IV DVD and then updating it from GFWL itself to 2.0. I believe IV comes with GFWL 1.1.
Edmachine
I have come to a conclusion: the people at Microsoft, who have made this Operating System, are bloody idiots. I apologize about swearing in advance. Now, I wanted to show Picolini what a big difference there is between the taskbar heights. I open up the new Paint. Printscreen, copy in, all OK. Copy image from Photobucket in FF, paste in Paint, OK. And for comparison, I threw in the default theme as well. I have to save the image. Since I'm going to upload it from XP, I decide to save it to drive D. I can't. It spit out an error, that said, that I can't do it because of something I had already forgotten, but nevermind, I still couldn't save there. Weird, I thought. OK, so I am going to save to C. Also can't. Program Files then (for easy access from XP). [rant] Nope. Why should you deny ME saving a PICTURE to a drive THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANY OS INSTALLED??!! WHY? (I'm talking about D, by the way) It's made for saving pictures on, you morons. Why the f*ck would they not allow me, an administrator, to save a f*cking .png file on a different f*cking drive?! How stupid do you have to be to mess something up with saving it? No, how stupid do you have to be, to disallow me save it on a seperate drive?! I get that you aren't allowed to save on C:\, or maybe C:\Program Files (which I should be allowed to), but... D... [/rant] *sigh* I needed that. Haven't ranted about anything in a while. That feels quite good, actually. Here you go, Picolini. I am actually surprised, that the default taskbar is smaller than the classic, however, in XP it is a lot smaller. And why did they make the buttons so damn big?! We will be the arms that lift you up We will be the hand that strike you down
Cursed
I gave up on downloading Windows 7 (The download broke at 52%). I'd really expect them to make Windows Classic thin, seriously, what a waste of space.
