Keyboard reconfiguration fix, very simple

I actually figured this out over a month ago (on Dec. 4, 2008), but I noticed that people were still posting comments that their keyboard configuration wouldn’t save after exiting the game and reloading… meaning that they still had to reconfigure their keyboard every time they started the game, which can be very annoying.

 

This is the fix that worked for me, and it works every time:

 

I have Windows XP Professional.

 

1) First I reconfigure the Keyboard settings the way I want, then I exit the Custom Mapping screen back to the Control options screen.

 

2) Next I go to the Windows Desktop (with the game still running).

 

3) I go to the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\…\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\user_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

 

4) I copy the ControlMap.dat file from that folder (don’t delete it, leave it there).

 

5) Then I go to the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\…\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\user_invalid

 

6) I then paste the ControlMap.dat file into that folder, which overwrites the existing ControlMap.dat file that’s already there.

 

That’s all… the Keyboard configuration is now changed, and stays that way after exiting the game and reloading.

 

I have to do all of that each time I reconfigure the keyboard, but at least it's changed.

 

I don’t know if it’ll work for anyone else, but it definitely works for me, and it works well.
