elBATCHo
i bought another 2 stick of the same g.skill ram so i have 8gb now. no page file. now GTA is crashing whithin 5 minutes or less, no error. maybe one of the 2 sticks is bad now? i will try removing them in a bit but im going to try to run other games first to see if they do it also. Nurdle
You need a pagefile no matter how much ram you have installed on your system. Some programs\games will not operate without a pagefile.
anus
Try running Memtest to check the RAM for any problems. I haven't tried running IV without a pagefile yet so I'm not sure, but try enabling the page file.

elBATCHo
gta4 worked fine with no pagefile when i only had 4 gb. i will try the memtest later but everything else seems to be running fine so far. i playd GTA4 with no page file for like a week then i started messing with it and got my first resc10 error, i was using like 1gb of vid memory in the game settings. elBATCHo
well i took out the 2 new sticks. no crash for 1 hr. i put in the enw sticks and took out the old sticks, no crashed. im starting to think GTA4 doesnt like 8gb, and again i have paging file turned off and all is fine and I have never had problems. Your "upgrade" was not a good idea for now. Go back to your original configuration. GTA4 just will not use that much RAM, no matter the settings. If you do decide to upgrade to 8GB in the future, verify compatibility and settings for your motherboard, and then buy all 8GB of RAM as a "kit" so the modules are all designed to work together. Just to clear up another misconception, GTA4 works great without a page file.
elBATCHo
well, again, all 4 sticks are the same model and brand. and this board should have no problem running this configuration. i have been using Crysis and Crysis Wars, FC2 for the least few hrs with the 8 gb and no problems, my usage is near 4 gb so that was the reason i got the other 4 gb, and it was only 53$ so you can't go wrong. i still don't understand why GTA4 crashes to desktop. BUT right before a crash I do hear the sound loop over and over, then 5 seconds later it crashes.
elBATCHo
well I kinda fixed the problem, but Im not sure what it was. I was running the new sticks on the 1 and 3 slots and the old sticks on the free slots, so basically i switched them around. and Im using -nomemrestrict and the game works now. no crash. after about 1 hr I was using 4.5gb ram. Bobby Budnick
The sticks must be designed as a "kit". Typically these modules are pretested at the factory for compatibility. The more memory you have, the more chance a subtle error or incompatibility will result in a game/OS crash. If the sticks were truly "identical" switching their slot positions would not have changed a thing. This shows further evidence the memory has compatibility problems. Clearly, the -nomemrestrict command line switch is what is using up all that RAM. Care to explain why you are using that switch? By comparison, on one PC I run at medium settings with 1366x768 resolution and the game uses about 700MB of RAM, even after 3 hours or so.
