nvr2fst
I am putting a new processor in tomorrow. So I figured it would be a good time for a clean instal of Vista. I am worried about my savegames after reading how many have lost theirs. Dont want to lose mine because I am around 60 percent through. I have read the posts but I see so many different peoples method and then others saying it didnt work for them. Is there one worth a sticky? I have played only offline. Another question, is it better to use a clean hard drive just for games only and have the OS on another. I have plenty of drives I could use. Girish
From what I've seen in here, your savegames won't load if you reinstall Vista unless you use the Xlive wrapper which will disable multiplayer. You'll have to create a new save on your newly installed OS to play multiplayer. These topics will help you: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=386320 http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=388658 And you can install the game in any hard drive; it doesn't matter. If you're having issues, you could always try defragging it.
anus
If you played using an offline profile I'm pretty sure the save games will work fine. But just in case, I'd recommend that you use the Xliveless mod so that you're able to load any save games. The separate hard drive for games is a personal preference if you ask me, BUT you would get better performance if you put IV on a separate high performance HDD with it's own page file. ARGJÄVLAKUND
Hey. I went from XP Pro to Windows Vista Ultimate and saved my gamefiles on an USB-stick with no problems. Here's how I did it. 1. Backup the LATEST (most recent save date) saved game in \AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames 2. Install Vista and GTA IV. 3. Start a new game and go to Roman's apartment and save a game. 4. Turn the game off and enable 'See hidden files and folders' 5. Locate the new Rockstar Games folder in C:\Users\YOURNAMEHERE\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames 6. Replace the saved game in the \savegames\ folder with the one you backed up. 7. Go into GTA IV and play your saved game! This was my Games for Windows - Live online profile account. No 3rd party creepy software needed. Hope this helps.
BorgDroneX
well im using WinXP and my saved game was in c:\Documents & Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTAIV\Savegames in that savegames folder is another folder with an ID number attached to it, im not sure where in Vista your Rockstar Games folder will be but once you find it back the entire directory up somewhere safe after you have reinstalled Vista and reinstalled the game go to same location and put the files that are in the folder with the ID number into the new ID folder created after you reinstalled game and your saved games will show up in game, i did this and it worked a treat IMPORTANT YOU MUST PUT THE FILES IN THE NEW ID FOLDER CREATED AND NOT JUST PUT THE OLDER FOLDER BACK IN IF YOU DO YOUR SAVE GAMES WONT SHOW IN THE GAME!! nvr2fst
I found it through search. Now where in the hell is my COD4 and World at war saved! If I remember XP had games all in one spot.
anus
Its different for Vista. Your saves are located at C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames. The COD4 saves are located here at C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\(Your profile name). And WaW saves are located at C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Activision\CoDWaW. Edited January 8, 2009 by Warlord.
nvr2fst
Its different for Vista. Your saves are located at C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames. Browse the C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local. Most probably your COD4 and WaW saves are located there. Over the last year and a half I have been using Vista. The saves can show up in different places for different games. I found the COD4 in the programs under the activision subfolders. So now I am looking for World at war and it isnt in there. If I go c/users/myname/-----the only folder that has a save is the microsoft games save folder.
anus
Could be that the WaW saves are located in that Microsoft folder. Check it out. Or try doing the same thing as COD4 and looking in WaW's program folder.

I usualy put them on #2 harddrive until I can transfer them back over after install of OS and games. I have a third drive that is just for my saved stuff like program EXEs, pictures and videos
nvr2fst
The more I look at all my programs and games the more I am dreading doing this reinstal. I do it about two or three times a year. Thats just on my PC. Everybody else gets me to do theirs too. What do ya think....should I reinstal now with the existing Processor or wait until tomorrow when I have the new one installed? Any difference? I would like to do it now while I am waiting and it will be ready for tomorrow.
anus
Wait until you get the processor. Then it'll truely be a fresh install, otherwise there may be some hardware conflicts.
