das joe
i know - these aren't features from past games, but ... - it would be great to interact and talk with people. the only way to interact with them is to beat them. i want to say some cusswords to provoke them or chat with the girls and eventually take them with me to my crib. in SA has been the possibility to say some random sentences if somebody talked to you. - people walking their dogs - people on bycicles or segways - buying some stuff in a supermarket - going to a bar alone getting drunk and puking at people afterwards ^^ - more clothing shops

Eroneouse
Probably already said in other posts but I miss the little things like the street gang element from san andreas and the annoyed drivers you hit who give chase but most of all the open server mod that allowed san andreas to host 100's of players at the same time who could form gangs join police take on jobs like gun running d*ug dealing etc that was one cool mod for the san andreas game

Wheelman
I miss paying for a game and getting just that - a game, and not a game plus a sh*tty Social Club application that consumes resources and provides absolutely no apparent benefit to me at all. I miss being able to modify cars in SA. I'm sure I'm not the only one who keeps "good" cars as their "own" in the garages/parking bays, and only uses random jacked cars for missions. I wanna mod them, tune them up, do something rediculous to them. I miss being able to buy property. One of the big advantages of VC & SA was the ability to acquire property and save points around the map. Without it, Liberty City in IV just doesn't feel as... homely? I've got $800,000+ in the bank, and I still have to drive for minutes and endure bridge tolls and traffic queues to get to a safehouse. I want to buy Pegorino's mansion, the virgin computer geek's glass penthouse in Alderney, somewhere in Dukes or Broker, etc. If you could buy these, there would actually be a purpose to acquiring all this money - and if you wanted them all, maybe it would force you to do extra delivery jobs, give taxi rides, etc. Never thought I'd say it, but I miss the sprawling open countryside and little towns of SA. At the time they felt like a pain to drive through to get from one place to another, but the distance was sufficient to allow each city to have a unique feel to it. And it was good sometimes to just explore the countryside, stumbling upon little towns full of hicks and rednecks. Somehow, the small country towns did have a real small town feel to them - sherriffs rather than police, all low rise buildings, a small local polcie station, hospital, or row of shops. Good stuff. I miss the atmosphere of VC. I never got round to completing it entirely, but my god the artists and designers had a riot making the Vice City map. It wasn't all good - the layout wasn't as good as GTA3's LC, with weird roads not really going anywhere and plenty things simply used as filler (beach taking up a quarter of the map, anyone?) - but the atmosphere! The neons, the art deco, the sunsets, the music, the classic 80s supercars. I know LC/NYC isn't supposed to be like that - I find IV's LC being much more representative of a real city, but lacking in tongue-in-cheek exaggerated character. Speaking of which, I miss the humour of all the previous GTAs. IV is realistic, but dour. Niko's sarcasm and cynicism is often amusing, but there's little else that comes across as funny. The only thing I can think of that sticks in my mind that had me laughing out loud was following Bernie as he hilariously minced his way round Central Park. Yet GTA3 and VC were just a riot from start to finish, full of references on many different levels, really light hearted in places, and brilliant parodies in others. Maybe it's the story in IV - a brooding tale of seeking revenge and finding your feet as an immigrant isn't going to have much in the way of light-hearted, funny moments. chngdman
Plus, it's the first GTA of this generation. Claude was like that, but silent, and all he could do was hits for the mob or triad etc. Not many variation etc. Crappy radar and so on. It's all there in IV, we will have our SA again, my dears, it will be glorious. And vice city. There's an example of the humour still there, just harder to see "killing is the only thing I'm good at" It's not just true for niko when he says it - it's true for the player! We can't fly planes, we can't help radio controlled fanatics, we cant burn down pot plants, list is long indeed
vargihate
I miss just messing around. VC and SA had this unique thing. When I was bored I just played the game and if someone was watching me he would say that I was doing absolutely nothing. But it was great fun for me, just drive around the endless roads, or fly for some time until I finally jump with the chute or without it I don’t know why but in GTA IV I don’t really get this satisfaction and I don’t know why. It’s not just the lack of planes or the chutes, it’s the whole experience in general. I find it rather slow, the cars don’t go as fast as SA, and as soon as you get the speed you like there’s a great chance you’ll end up crushing a second later since everything is so crowded. Now that I think of it, I must miss the open space I liked doing crazy $hit with the bikes, I bet a lot of you know what I mean.

MorlockGod
Naturally I miss all the toys and abilities from previous GTAs, just as others have listed, but for me it is Liberty City itself that is the greatest limitation. As wonderful as it is with all its details and life, it is just too intentionally gritty and claustrophobic for my tastes. GTAIV is wonderful, but is basically variations on the theme of "grey". In SA I loved hopping into a jet and "going somewhere". I never get that feeling with the new Liberty City - I am always trapped inside a meticulously detailed grey box, under the watchful eye of the law, never really feeling that I can be free. I look forward to SanAndreasII or its equivalent. Toys+Freedom=Happy

bluebird2008
I hope that 4 represents the first of a trilogy for GTA because i do get the sense that there just is'nt that much on offer with GTA4. Money is irrelevent, severe lack of weapons, missions that end up being very repetative, lack of cars/trucks/tanks/planes etc. Why have they never brought back the kill frenzy's, or done something similar. They were fun and a quick fix of mayhem. SA was awsome in every way, it had the charicters, intresting places, missions that had parts to them, i.e one of the early missions where CJ and bro go to hotel and its gets raided by swat, you storm in then escape with bro, then shift to shotgun with ak fighting off coppers. Really epic missions, more like a film than a game. Fully customizable charicters and stats, or go back to the 1st GTA where you could select you own charicter, Niko just is'nt that interesting. Money was'nt too hard to get and you had a purpose to obtain it to buy the safehouses, tune cars, outfits etc. GTA4 cars are realistic, which is progress, but dull. No tuning, customising, no real reason to hang onto them. Bring back to locked cam or give us an option to turn it on. Pisses me off trying to enjoy driving at full speed and be a camera man at the same time. Dont mind the more realistic driving and traffic, but at least give us controller support, after all this game was designed to be played with the consoles however much we PC gamers dislike to admit. One thing that every GTA game has suffered from and needs to be sorted is enemy AI. They just stay in their spawning places or run to their pre defined spots and stay in cover, shooting a random. This is really poor for any game, but for GTA and the amount of previous titles in the series, it is probably the biggest mistake R* have made. Overall, there are loads of things that have been done in the previous games that have been left out. I dont mind them making GTA more realistic, its a good thing, but they've also made it less fun. I bought this game when it came out but uninstalled it after 2 weeks because I found it a step back from SA and just was'nt as fun. I will play the game through when it is properly patched and has proper controller support. But although this game is graphically better than any other GTA, it just is'nt half as fun. If this thread and the ideas in it is'nt picked up and acted upon by R*, then they will have let the most popular game in history slip through their fingers. mkey82
Aaah, nostalgia... where would we be without it? Even though measuring by today technological standards VC is a pile of low res textures and low poly objects with funny animations and shooting, it remains my favorite game of all time. And since not one game intrigued me like VC before nor after, I think VC will remain my no. 1 (as I get older and tend to over think about games in general). VC has everything. Excellent voice acting which actually made me think about what was going on and what characters were going through. Ray Liotta, Tome Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Danny Trejo, Burt Reynolds... the helped making VC majestic. The story was involving and had some really emotionally charged moments (like the mission where you defend your assets from Sony's goons or the bank robbery). There was a certain level of difficulty tied with everything you did, i.e. you needed some skills. Like, if you need to chase and ram someone, you NEED to CHASE and RAM that person, not just take it easy while knowing they will wait for you on the first corner. Where's the fun in that? I'm not a big fan of racing and car chases, but I like to get involved while playing, instead of letting the game play itself. The only times I died on a mission in IV was after catching direct shotgun or smg fire close range. In most cases they take their sweet time to look at you, aim and fire. I believe the following would make IV a lot better game: - silenced pistol for smooth assassin like action - parachute for f*cking around - assets and missions for them (like the Malibu club or the studio in VC; those missions were optional, but they were among the greatest GTA missions in general) - some side missions activity, just to help you make some dosh or relax - less dumbed down gameplay and more mission variety. And this is what kills me in IV, if you turn on the autosave feature, you can go on a mission rampage and complete loads of them with a few quick stops for restocking armor. slivski
I miss the aliens that took over San Andreas in the last mission. They were friendly and gave me cake. I later found out the cake was a lie. I miss the cake.
Vert101
I miss playing pool in GTA SA The pool minigame was great in that version... I can't say the same for the one in GTA4. and before you say "Vert FFS get over pool" I still think that they could have made the minigames a lot more involved. I have said this before... I think that being in a bar and playing pool or darts, with a room full of people should = 5 star fun And I also miss being able to gamble and spend money on property and investments. Money had a purpose in GTA SA, and Vice City. Edited January 13, 2009 by Vert101
algenon_iii
The atmosphere of VC Police bribes Skill levels and corresponding increases in ability for vehicles and weapons - that I think was the single best idea put into SA. It encouraged you to go out and explore, find hidden weapons and use them
