your card cant run this game because Lost and Damned is for the xbox360. ^_^

i think you're lost. go back to the PC Version thread otherwise you'll be damned. just kidding.

Lolwut. This is the PC version part of the forums.

But yeah, GTA IV is so poorly optimized and is very likely the reason you're getting the problem. Don't listen to anyone who says "You need to upgrade" and all that bullsh*t, because you don't. GTA IV should be running flawlessly even at low settings with your kind of rig.

We can only hope for a new patch to fix it.

The post is NOW in the right forum, it was originally posted in the lost and damned forum but I moved it here. As for the guys problem on that setup he will have to run the game with low settings on everything to get a decent frame rate, I have a PC with an 8600gt which is slightly slower than the 8600gts and I can get it playable at 1024 x 768 with low settings and most of the sliders set to 10 with traffic set to 30 and shadow density off.

It isn't about the quality of the port here the problem is the 8600gts is WEAKER than the gpu in the consoles. So it is unrealistic to expect the 8600gts to run this game on medium settings.

Your computer specs are fine for the game, make sure your drivers are up to date and theres no other programs running including windows side bar.

Update Drivers, Start with the lowest settings, adjust till it becomes YECK! then step it down a couple of notches. Thats what i did anyway. I also set shadows to 0, freaking ugly.

Heard about this resolution base scaling thing, what resolution are you playing again? I fangled with the commandline.txt. a bit, smoothed the fps, of course im only running with 1024x768, highest my Ancient CRT can Handle blush.gif (will buy a new one soon). Settings all high. Still Testing for extended periods though.

First of all, get the 185.20 drivers.

I too have a 8600GT clocked at 800/1900/475 (DDR2 mad.gif). I run the game at 1024x768 with everything maxed out except for view distance and detail distance (which I don't really need). I get 20-25 FPS which i think is perfectly playable.

So try overclocking your card first. Since its a GTS, you'll probably be able to clock higher.

But your CPU isn't all that good either, so don't expect awesome frames.

The commands I use are:

-novblank

-memrestrict 629145600

But my settings may not work as well for you, so try going from the lowest settings until it becomes unplayable like others have said.

as far as other programs running in the background, i just reinstalled my operating system (xp) and updated it. the only programs i have running are antivirus and zonealarm.

in warlord's reply refering to the drivers 185.20. the latest i have found are 180.xx and the nvidia website only had 175.xx(?). is there a good program for overclocking the card? also, i have heard others on other sites refer to commands to use to optimize performance but where do you put those?

the game runs fine it just baffles me that after ~20 minutes the performance runs down to less than a crawl. i have ran the program with window's performance window open and it shows a spike in memory usage at regular intervals corresponding to the individual movements (1 frame every ~3 seconds). this isn't normal even with my less-than-stellar rig.

Its not you. Its the game confused.gif

The game becoming slow after a while is a sign of the memory leak happening.

Try the '-memrestrict 629145600' command I posted earlier. It completely fixed the memory leak for me. I too started to get slowdowns and stuttering with my 8600GT after a while, but that command completely fixed it.

The 185.20 drivers are still in BETA stage, but loads of people have reported huge performance increases with this driver. There are benchmarks to prove that this is the fastest nVidia drivers yet, even beating the 178.XX drivers.

Here is the link to the XtremeG modded 185.20 drivers. These are what I use and they're basically 185.20 drivers tweaked for better performance and image quality. I highly recommend this driver.

Be sure to uninstall your current driver, run DriverCleaner in Safe Mode and then install the drivers I linked to.

Good luck smile.gif.
