Saggy
I need to complain to some people, so I figured I'd start here. I am really getting tired of school already, which isn't good considering this is only my second quarter. I think it may have had something to do with the month long break between them, or just the shock of having to get back into classes, but I'm really tired of it. First thing that happened is that my financial aid check was about $2,100 less than I thought it was going to be, rendering all of my careful budgeting completely useless. I guess I probably shouldn't have counted my chickens before they hatched, but since I did I pretty much have no money to buy food, gas, care insurance, or Internet service. In fact, I'm getting my internet connection disconnected next Tuesday. Then there's the classes themselves. I'm taking an Information Technology course, you know computers and such, yet I'm in classes like Introduction to PowerPoint and Introduction to Spreasheets. One of my teachers is a total bitch that doesn't seem to understand the delicate mechanics of buying books with financial aid ( see: pissing in the wind ), and the other is a lifeless robot who lives his life by his class syllabus. The only instructor that I actually like so far is teaching an "Internet Essentials" class that I think even everyone here would laugh at as trivial. I mean, honestly, my classes make me feel like I'm back in middle school. Even the computer operating systems class is disappointing; we use 9 weeks to cover installing and maintaining Vista and XP. I don't know why it would take 9 weeks, but then we get three dedicated to Linux. It seems a little reversed, but luckily I already know my way around Linux and Windows, it just means this class is going to be extremely boring as well. At the end it all seems extremely pointless, just to get a degree, which in itself isn't even that great of a degree. I could probably move out of my sh*thole town ( and no, I'm not one of those people that just thinks their town sucks, Yakima, look it up ) and go to Seattle and find a job there. I could probably even get an entry-level tech job and be happier that way, but I don't really feel like it would be a good idea to do that now. So I'm constantly going between what I think would be the fast-track to success, and what I think is the best plan in the long-run. So to sum it up, I'm feeling incredibly insecure in my ability to actual accomplish anything, I'm starving and can't afford to do anything or go anywhere, and I have to go take a test revolving around some douche bag instructor's syllabus. Now, someone tell me about your life to make mine seem better, please. No third-world children that have to dodge land-mines though, I could just watch Headline News if I wanted to be more depressed. kevin2006rhs
Get a part time job to cover the costs. Or if you already have on, find one. Sure the economy is bad, but I work for f*ckin comcast as a f*ckin field technician. I managed to find a f*ckin job without a huge tech background. Most people out there may want experience and schooling but there are just as many jobs out there that want a fresh face and mind that they can mold into the perfect employee. Just a thought... Randall Flagg
I'm unemployed. I have $450+ credit card debt. A $500+ hospital bill, cause I was throwing up alot and thought I had stomach ulcers. Turned out it was stress related (fear of losing contact with my wife cause her dad is a prick, etc...). I currently have no car insurance. I have a desk in my room with a broken PC on it. I'm using my aunts mac atm. My glasses are broken, and taped. I've been fired from 3+ jobs. 2 for getting wasted on the job, 1 for not kissing the managers ass. I suffered an erroneous seperation from the USAF for losing my temper(really really lost it), then saying to much. I have no schooling besides HS. I have a hairy stomach that rubs against my jeans, it hurts sometimes. My wife is really great though, so that makes up for it all. And I have a job interview tommorrow at Safeway for either the meat department or something else (forgot what I applied for, pretty sure it was meat). Cheer up Sag! Life always has it's downs. But from expierence it seems things can only get better, if you try, tell yourself you can do it, and don't look back. NorthwestRastafarian
Some good beer in Yakima. sh*tty town, but some good beer. Good noodles in Cambodia as well, Sag. Just thought I'd mention it. Lots of landmines and orphaned, crippled, impoverished children, but good noodles. Edit: Seriously, that's sh*tty. There is no denying the mismanagement and culture of deceit within educational aid money. Never trust federal aid alone, would be my advice going forward (and I would suggest going forward for at least a year if you can afford it with a part time job) look for some little scholarships next term, don't pay for text books, etc. Re: textbooks, get them for free on interlibrary loan through the Summit program from somewhere across the country where the due date is distant, and you will never a dime on text books again. It's a big money saver. Edited January 7, 2009 by NorthwestRastafarian
fuckindumass
College can be a bitch, starving and all that, but I think you'll be much happier, if not thinner, in a decade if you stick with it. When it gets bad, surely there's food pantries or Salvation Army. Fast food ketchup packets & free bread. I wouldn't want to live like that, but if it got me a degree I find it worthwhile. Randall Flagg
Be careful of salvation army. Anal cavity might loosen up after a stay there. So I've heard...
Saggy
@kevin I thought about trying to find a job, but it's very hard to do so in Yakima anyway, and now with the bad economy it's even harder. I know a lot of people say that they can't find a job in town, and it's usually less than true, but in my circumstances the only jobs that are really available to me are fast-food ones that have really odd hours and a tendency to fire you after a few months of working there, and I can't work while collecting the income I currently receive. This month was just especially harsh because I had counted on receiving much more money; a rookie mistake in budgeting as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully I'll be doing better by next month. As far as a tech job goes, there's not any here in Yakima, aside from the few system engineers and network administrators with four year degrees and five or ten years in the industry already. You've essentially got to have a degree to do anything worthwhile here though. @NorthwestRastafarian I had thought about student loans, but decided against them because I've already got about 5k in debts from a previous foray with school. Combine that with my lack of self-confidence in actually succeeding in school, I feel like getting more loans would just be putting myself under more debt that I'll probably never pay off. In any case, I just wanted to gripe a little bit. I've got a whole list of sh*t I can complain about, but I think overall I'm just falling back into a depression. I was feeling really great about things when I moved out and started school last quarter, and I can't really see what changed aside from the financial situation, even though I wasn't doing too good then either. I'm nearing the one-year mark since my mother's death, but I don't think that has anything more to do with it now than it has since I'm not really focusing on that too much. I don't know, hopefully I'm just in a funk that I'll get over in a week or two. trip
i hear ya my IT brother. when i went to school for a computer science degree i already knew computers but was forced to take all the little bullsh*t reqs. i even had to take non computer math classes to qualify. it sucks and if you end up in the world if IT it is pointless since the IT world changes weekly. i can tell you that what i do today is nothing like what i was taught in the university. as far as money goes. look in to co-op or work study. you have to live IT - you can't be taught it. co-op would give you real world experience as well as decient paycheck to help you eat and such. we reciently hired 2 people that we had from a co-op deal after they graduated. not a bad way to start i have to think. their first jobs out of school turned out to be high paying. the same pay we would give to someone 20yrs out of school looking for a job My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens

I plan on doing that though. I already know a few people in the IT industry, so I have a small semblance of what you mean by it constantly changing. It makes going through this school thing all the harder knowing that I'm basically going to have to do a whole lot of learning once I get a job anyway.
