nvr2fst
I have a core 2 6600 2.40. I am looking to bump it up. I have an Asus P5Q Deluxe MB. I have been reading as much as I can everywhere. But I am still at a loss. Quad core maybe 2.4 2.6. or another 2 core 3 mghz or up. What would give the best gain for the buck. I am a gamer and do some video editng. I have a 8800 gtx 768. 4 gigs system ram. Vista 32 Ultimate. I have been building my own systems for the last 8 years but I dont get really entrenched in all the details. I understand all the basics of hardware but no more do I buy the latest and greatest like I used to. I try to be more reasonable with my money. I am not a bragging rights type of builder. I just like to keep my system up to par. My system runs really well I just feel I have to bump up the processor since I have had it a couple years now. Prices have gone down on the LGA 775s. Any suggestions?
3niX
Well... Your text comes off as a bit confusing... are you asking about overclocking or buying a new processor. If its the later then I think you are probably fine enough with the processor youve got now. Though if you are really inclined towards upgrading... wait for the LGA1366 motherboards to drop in price a bit and build a new PC.
nvr2fst
No not interested in overclocking. I am not interested in an all new system build. I am still happy with my HDs, GRFX card, memory and all. I got this motherboard only a couple months ago. I guess what I am asking is Quad core with a lower mghz or stick with another 2 core with a higher mghz. A Quad 3 mghz is just too much money considering in about a year I will probably do another full rebuild. May consider a lower mghz Quad if it will give a noticeable jump in performance as opposed to a 2 core like I have but with a higher mghz and bus speed than I have now. anus
This is just my opinion, but I think right now its best to go with a quad. Quads are the future after all, and if you're playing IV it will REALLY come in handy. So, to answer your question, go for a quad with a lower clock rather than a higher clocked dual. Remember though, if overclocking, dual cores seem to be able to be clocked higher, but its a matter of getting a good chip IMO.
3niX
Well... The thing is... you have an E6600 (presumably) which isnt very far away from the Q6600 (which would be the best recommendation for a quadcore) in performance. And there really isnt a big step upwards from the Q6600 in gaming. To get any negligible increase in performance youd have to go for either an E8600 or E8200 (and overclock it to the E8600 level) since most of the current games arent optimized for four cores. Even then there wont be that much difference. Say what you will but Intels processors have held up pretty well against time. Im just saying that there is no point in shelling out $150-$200 to get a minor increase in performance.
