GTA IV mods are legal?

Hey everyone, it's my first post in here.

It's legal to make GTA IV mods (modifying textures for example)? I'm thinking of modifying some this but I don't want to get in trouble.

Thanks in advance,

Fergo

Should be legal, you own the files, right? I suggest reading through the EULA (as if) for more info.

Besides, why would they hunt you down for enhancing a texture or two? And how? This isn't CSI, they'd need a bunch of permits to search your IP, talk to your ISP and so on.

you bought the game you can do as you want. no you can be banned if what your doing effects multiplayer... And as long as you don't try to redistribute or make profit off of R*'s work then your in the clear. Either way your safe dude. Mod the game how ya like. Make a hot coffee patch lol, then they'll love ya! by love I mean try and pursue you!

does the eula sh*t even apply to the content of the box? On my box it says "supports 64-bit", and all the sh*t in the box runs in 32-bit only. So with all the 32-bit stuff I can do whatever I want, right?

You can do pretty much whatever you want with the files, except sell them.

This reminds me of one of Niko's phrases when visiting the strip joints, "Is this sh*t legal?"

It is illegal i think, but they dont seem to mind modding.

If it was Marvel you'd be f*cked they'll sue anyone who even mentions one of their copyrighted products. Someone made a spiderman model for UT2004 once, and they had his website shut down and his computer equipment siezed lol

I think that R* could make the case that it's illegal, but I doubt they would since GTA modding is what is single handedly saving this game.

what a wonderful insight

yes technically it is illegal, but no you won't get sued for it unless you sell what you do.

and r* have always turned a blind eye to modding their games and have even admitted to enjoying/trying some (aka mta)

Its illegal, its called reverse engineering.

Everything in this game is R*'s intelectual property, not yours (except for stuff they licensed for the game, like the music).

"Oh but i paid for the game and it is mine!!1

Wrong, you own a license to use (play) the game, you dont own the content (the content is worth millions $ lol).

So yes, they might not care about modifications but if they wanted to they could throw your ass in court and f*ck up your life for good.

I'm not sure if it's technically legal or not, but R* have always actively supported the GTA modding community.

supported?

since when have they supported anything?

everything is done by the modders supporting would mean r* actually did something to help them,

they don't support they tolerate.

They support it in the sense that they encourage it.

if you want to be safe anythings off online is safe and why do they care. they are not going house to house and looking to see if you changed anything. But posting exploded files and modding tools is a gray area. but rockstare seems to not care and its not worth fighting over. i would not worry about that at all. they know this is the pc and people are going to anyways.

now making copy's of the disk and giving or selling it is something they will not like. or using the mods or hacks public online matches is not good. and if you want to be say i would not even use it on online privet matches. but the most they will do is ban you from windows live.

modding probably voids something like tech support warranty. if that even exist.

They encouraged it in GTA3 by allowing you to swap/edit Claude's texture. tounge.gif And there's also this...

http://www.rockstargames.com/vicecity/pc/ (Webring)

"You know where to go for all those unofficial mods, skins..."

http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/pc/ (Webring)

"For more information... including mods, skins..."

http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/pc/ (Info -> Features)

"Player modification support, giving PC gamers the opportunity to create their own world within San Andreas."

That, to me, sounds like they are encouraging it.

ok then i admit i was wrong, but that has changed ever since hot coffee though,

and i still don't like their definition of "support".

It is, in most cases illegal, but the fewest devs would do anything against it, since modding sells games.

Rockstar should just release modding tools and stuff you know, like Bethesda or Valve.
