Toadyd
I know there are quite a few last.fm users here, but has anyone else heard of/do you use Spotify as well? Spotify is quickly becoming one of my favourite apps, since discovering it a few weeks ago i've probably used it for about 60% of my listening while at my computer. What is Spotify? Spotify offers you legal and free access to a huge library of music. All you need to do is create an account and download our streaming music player. It’s a great service and highly recommended, and something that Apple and iTunes needs to watch closely. The sound quality (something I was a little worried about), is actually very good, and the social features are superb - sharing playlists and allowing people to add to the list is very cool (a friend sent me an excellent playlist last night from Stockholm) - truly global tunes! Sound quality is pretty decent, 'Ogg Vorbis q5, up to approx. 160kb/s' which is more than adequate for casual listening. The volume levels aren't great, but hopefully that will be improved over time. For added awesomeness: http://www.listiply.com/ - you can download/upload users playlists, pre-made 'party' soundtracks etc... But even more awesome, it also scrobbles your tracks to last.fm ... And there’s more! One of our developers also came up with a neat Greasemonkey script for Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari that works with Last.fm. What is does is it adds a little green music icon next to all the tracks, albums and artists on Last.fm’s website. When you click the icon it will search through Spotify for that artist or track and you can start listening to it right away. I love this, you can look at recommendations etc... that last.fm gives you, and if the full track isn't available on last.fm you can play it in spotify instead. When i joined it was free to register if you lived in the UK, otherwise you needed an invite. I have 5 available at the moment, so if anyone is interested ask away. Gutslab
Sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind asking for one of your invites, but the service isn't available in the US yet. I'm bogged down by numerous music blogs atm anyway.
Damien.
It's the best f*cking thing to happen the internet since firefox. I think i must use it like 90% of the time that i spend at my PC. To anyone who know someone with invites, nag them to death until they give you one, it's worth it. I can't seem to get the last.fm scrobbler working though, can someone recommend me any good tutorials? Edited January 8, 2009 by Damien
Illousion
I've got five invites. Throw me a PM if you want one. Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
asimov
So do you have to stream the songs if you want to listen to them? There's no way to just download and have them right? seems pretty wasteful to me .
Toadyd
I can't seem to get the last.fm scrobbler working though, can someone recommend me any good tutorials? Are you trying to use that plugin that was around a few weeks ago? If you go into your spotify preferences you should see: just put your details in and you should be set. It won't show anything is playing in the last.fm client, but it should update your profile. And asimov, yeah it is a streaming service. But i wouldn't call it wasteful. If i'm on my laptop and i want to throw some music on i can simply open spotify and create a playlist anywhere - if i'm on the train, if i'm in the kitchen, if i'm out at a cafe. Instead of having to plug in my external hard drive i can just listen anywhere where there is wi-fi. If you only have a crappy internet connection, or you you put most of your music on your portable player, but for me i don't even bother downloading a lot of albums now. I can listen to them, pause them, play them again whenever and wherever without having to break the law or spend any of my money.
asimov
Without having to break the law I guess that sums it up
Lochie_old
Apparently its not available in Australia yet? Bah. Humbug.
Trows
And asimov, yeah it is a streaming service. But i wouldn't call it wasteful. You don't have to live with primitive Australian internet. No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

Lazzo
Thanks. I was excited- until I realized I lived in music licensing purgatory. One of the many moments I long to live in Europe. "romance at short notice was her speciality."

Toadyd
Ahh i didn't realise it was exclusive to Europeans at the moment. I got a PM from an American member who i gave an invite too, but it wouldn't let him sign up still
major underscore
Thanks. I was excited- until I realized I lived in music licensing purgatory. One of the many moments I long to live in Europe. Well, I guess those of us living in Europe finally got on the right side of the zone border on one of these licensing deals (I can't begin to count the number of times I've run into those country blocks keeping me from watching U.S. TV series and stuff online; after all, you guys make 90% of the stuff worth watching/listening to, like HBO series).
