TECHN9CiAN
I am tired of the damn Italian Mafia being in every GTA game... why? They are always made to play a big role in every GTA game, and I have had enough of them. Why are they so highly glorified in every GTA game? I am really looking forward to a GTA game where they are completely omitted. It's not like they are the only, or the most powerfull/influential criminal organization out there. To hell with them. R*: show some creativity in your next game... drop those Mafia movies and look for insperation elsewhere. The Mafia genre (or whatever you want to call it) has gotten old. And thanks to R*, it's just played out now. Maybe they should move GTA to somewhere else in the world other than America... Don't rule out the possibilities. Judging by the "love" between the Mafia and the Triads in GTA III, I bet the Mafia will be in Chinatown stories too. Note: I haven't played GTA VC Stories. Are they in that game as well? onlainari
Mafia was really small in san andreas. And it's a secondary player in GTA IV. The mafia exists, they're criminals, it works.
Nico Bellic
well the mafia plays a big role everywhere, what would it be if in Liberty City were no mafia or triads??? the mafia is everywhere and you cant avoid it...you cant rise up to rich by doing crimes, robbing, jacking, killing and dealing without having "problems" with the mafia...like i sad,its everywhere even in the Police and politic organizations...you just cant avoid it its the same in real life too

i like coffee enemas
Yh Mur Gangsta Characturs Lyk CJ Plz He Woz Cul O Yh N I Wona Play As A Jamaican N B In Da Hood LoL! So yeah, anyway. It would be unrealistic if you didn't encounter the mafia at some point during your criminal endevours. The mafia pretty much run everything, from one degree to another, so crossing paths with them would be inevitible if you were trying to climb up the criminal ladder. They'd need to check you out, see if you'd be a liablity, see if you'd bring any heat on anybody and to see if you're a cop. You know how paranoid those Italians are. While I agree that it may be growing a little tedious now, it would've been a bit silly for Niko to of risen his way up the cirminal ladder and not encountered the mafia in the end. I mean, that's where it ends. The mafia are right at the top of the criminal food chain. Afterall LC is widely based on New York AND the criminals of New York. So to have a story based in 'New York' and not include the mafia in it would be like making tea without a tea bag. It wouldn't work. You'd just have milk and hot water. And no, the mafia weren't in VCS. The main guys that ran VC were two brothers named Armando and Diego Mendez.
batik89
And no, the mafia weren't in VCS. The main guys that ran VC were two brothers named Armando and Diego Mendez. Yup, I ain't saw Mafia in Vice City Stories. But they were mentioned in there. Remember Barry Mickelthwaite? Phil Collins' manager. The Mafia was mentioned by him due to the fact that he owes a couple of million that Mafia had loaned him earlier. Then the Mafia sends hitmen to kill Barry and Phil only for the assassins to be killed by Victor Vance. Did you know the Mafia was mentioned by Barry? That was Forelli clan. i like coffee enemas
Oh yeah, he had trouble with the Forelli's. Owed them money or something... That's every game since III then! Although, the mafia weren't really In VCS per se. No key players showed up. Just a bunch of muscle. Edit: Just read the rest of your post. Yeah. I just looked at 'remember Barry Mickelthwaite?' and posted right away. My bad. Edited January 7, 2009 by leelee862

They're everywhere. The Mafia are right at the top of the criminal food chain. True for several places in America... but I'm not that surprised they were in GTA IV. Of course they would be in a game based on New York crime... but I don't like how they played such a big role in every game. For future GTA games, I hope that if the Mafia has to stick its nose in, then the protagonist better just run through them Rambo style and get over them and move on. f*ck the mafia. I thought i would like the eastern european influence aswell, working in organised husteling and theft in the beginning of the game, as they do in most of western Europe. Mainland Marauder
I don't see how a game based on a depiction of New York City's criminal underworld could not have the Italian Mafia. BlademanX
I would love a GTA London..Dun care what people say. I just think it would work because. you got gangs from all over the world here. You got the Turks, Albanians, polish, youth gangs. I dont think theres a limit. Then you got nice cars cuz a lot of people are now copying americans leasing 09 plates and stuff. So you gota a nice big city. fairly fresh cars and some back drop for a good story. I think they should use a eastern european character again. chngdman
You do know that the italian mafia kinda runs a large segment of gaming industry and other entertainment arts/industries, right? Self promotion, I guess. @rucke: They'll play a big roll in the first one as well... the diamonds. Plus, this is "New York"... their involvement is almost mandatory... I welcome a GTA London... except I don't think I'd be able to handle the british accent much. To my ears, it's like listening to Little Jacob speak English. GamerShotgun
One thing... since GTA III was nearly a "mafia simulator", it's pretty hard to do sequels without that setting. They wanted to tell us the Forelli's and Leone's story in general. That's why GTA has a unique story telling technique... you play as a non-mafia related character, and you still end up knowing much more about them in general
Mafioso86
Yeah it's all about location in my opinion... if you're doing a game about the criminal underworld based in New York or Vegas... they're kind of essential to have. I mean if the game is in LA, SF, Texas, Mexico, London... of course they're not gunna be in. A Chicago or Miami based GTA... while the mafia have a presence there... I feel like could omit them because of all of the street gangs or druglords. But the New York and Vegas underworlds were built by the mafia, you have to have them. Vercetti27
Niko was not ruthless. He was a little boy being forced to commit crimes in a 35 year old mans body. That was a bit controversial. Oh well....
SovietWarrior42
I thought IV pulled off the Mafia great. They made them like they are today, crippled by government, rats, and foriegners. Also, Niko was a good character. At least he didn't give a long lecture about drugs while smashing old ladies in the face like CJ.
fishermanGTA
Whether you like it or not the mafia will always play a role in the GTA series. The mafia plays a pivotal role in the crime world and therefore makes perfect sense for it to be in the series. Also the mafia plays large roles in crime in basically every major US city. Where there is money to be made the mafia will be there taking as much of it as they can.
