Ambient occlusion is a shading method used in 3D computer graphics which helps add realism to local reflection models by taking into account attenuation of light due to occlusion. Ambient Occlusion attempts to approximate the way light radiates in real life, especially off of what is normally considered non-reflective surfaces. For example, in the way light through a small crack in the curtain in an otherwise darkened hotel room can slightly illuminate the entire room, and not just the path of light passing through the crack itself.

I suppose that is the difference was wondering if any one has tried the driver for comparsion of the two aganist GTA4??

... peace

Can someone tell me which setup I should run? There's "PDSetup.exe" and "Setup.exe" and then there's "PhysX_8.11.18_SystemSoftware.exe".

Setup.exe and PhysX if you want. PDSetup.exe is for using an Nvidia GPU for AutoCAD.

  • PDSetup.exe = Performance Driver setup. Only used by NVidia Quadro cards in applications like 3D Studio and AutoCAD. NOT used in games!

Setup.exe = Main driver setup. Usually calls PhysX setup after driver installation

PhysX.exe = PhysX software setup. Enables PhysX calculations done on GPU for Geforce 8 and higher cards.

Normally you only need to run the setup.exe; if you think the PhysX setup hasn't been called during the main setup, you can install it separately.

Ok. I am a bit cautious, I tried this once before, and it gave me a bluescreen on startup, but I kind of rushed it so I probably made a mistake somewhere.

setup.exe is the one to go with. Worked fine on my PC.

Also, NEVER rush doing anything on computers, that's when things go wrong.

Ask Rockstar HAHAHAHA! Sorry couldn't resist. suicidal.gif

Ambient occlusion

Ambient occlusion is a feature included in any of the "versions" of the 185.20, there are some games that support it, including Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed, World in Conflict, etc ..., but GTA 4 doesnt support it.

GTA doesn't support anything forced on in the Nvidia control panel that I could tell. Maybe Vsync. So I'm not surprised it doesn't.

It supports Anisotropic Filtering, VSync and Mipmaps.

From what most people can tell, it's mostly DirectX 10 games that support AO.
