WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. (Jan. 6) - A 6-year-old Virginia boy who missed his bus tried to drive to school in his family's sedan -- and crashed.

His parents were charged with child endangerment. State police said the boy suffered only minor injuries and authorities drove him to school after he was evaluated at a local hospital for a bump on his head. He arrived shortly after lunch, Sgt. Tom Cunningham said.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.

The boy, whose name wasn't released, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and drove nearly six miles toward school while his mother was asleep, police said.

He made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.

The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games.

"He was very intent on getting to school," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE."

His parents, Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26, and David Eugene Dodson, 40, are each charged with child endangerment, Wilkins said. Waltman is being held without bond. Dodson was released on a $5,000 bond.

It was not clear if they had attorneys.

The boy and his 4-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.

"This really is a story of miracles," Wilkins said. "The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway."

Obviously the parents, especially the mom are to blame. What parent doesn't get up to see their PRE-SCHOOLER off to bus to make sure he is up, dressed, fed, etc. Jesus H Christ.

Jack will get wind of this I'm sure blaming GTA for the whole thing saying if he hadn't played it he wouldn't be able to drive. Blah, blah, blah.

If you in the mood for a read I got an old story about a college kid who played Saints Row after smoking cannabis then went on a suicidal rampage in Portsmouth: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-45...olent-game.html

How did a six year old get GTA and the Monster Jam game. They both are violent and are not for six year olds. (GTA = M Monster Jam = T)

It's a shame he didn't quite make it all the way which would have made it even funnier.

I agree. He did make it PRETTY far though. He will be an excellent driver one day. As far as I'm concerned GTA makes good drivers. I know that if I hit enough bystanders my engine will stall, I don't want that to happen, so I'm not going to do it.

His parents, Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26, and David Eugene Dodson, 40,

Wow.

If the bus was viewable from the house, the mother should have watched him go. If it wasn't, then she needs to drive him to the bus stop next time.

Yeah I noticed that to.

And I agree, seriously, the kids six. Make sure your kid makes it on the bus for gods sake.

y'know, he did all this just to get to school on time. he should be applauded.

there y'have it, folks: GTA stimulates a higher interest in education.

now this i really dont believe. maybe if it was mushrooms or acid, i'd be willing to acknowledge it as a possibility, but c'mon...weed? ganja? peace plant? this is the thing that caused the guy to go on a murderous rampage?

i know i'm very biased, but jeez.

Strong weed doesn't make you more likely to go on a murderous rampage, it would just amplify the effects of regular marijuana.

When your parents don't get up to feed you, anything is good for breakfast.

The only way this story could be better if he was black.

Why was a 6 year old playing GTA? There is a reason why it is M / 18. If you're not mature enough, don't play it! The parents fault for not looking after him. He clearly has no hope, judging by his parents.

I got busted at 4. On my way to my grandmother's. I don't recall playing video games in 1969. Must have been the little car from Monopoly. Or maybe Hotwheels. I should sue JT, he didn't protect me from myself.

Well with him always turning his water into wine, you can't expect him to be a very functional driver.
