Message to Rockstar - iTunes: All songs DRM-free

They need to stop spending to fight pirates and make more money by charging half as much for games and gaining all of those customers who "would by it, but i'm waiting until it goes down in price - $50.00 is ridiculous" (and it really is, games would sell more units and offset the "losses" if they werent so expensive. Instead, they choose to blow the money on protection that gets cracked just hours after a game comes out and settle for lower sales for the higher pricepoint. Easier to handle and sell 2 million units over the course of a year than it is to handle and sell double that because of all the people who are then included for the lower price point, however some people will yarr for the f*ck of it, millionaires that just wont buy a game...)

protection such as securom in recent times has actually caused pirating,

ie spore, securom on there started a boycott spore movement in which people actively encouraged to pirate because of securom.

indeed piracy is sad, I think like 90% of games are pirated, but this SecureRom and GWFL isn't doing anything apart from pissing off players

pretty much all games are pirated but the amount of piracy crimes i.e. amount of downloads for each particular game are in the minority when stacked against legit consumers...

What has SecuROM done to you?

well it doesn't work for me at all so it hasn't done anything but it has forced me to use illegal means to play the game because it doesn't work.

also made by the same sony people that caused havoc by putting rootkits on audio cd's.

I guess protecting your business interests can be a dilemma - you're trying to sell a new game, but you're afraid that the warez scene might feast on your work and crack it. You might use an industrial strength DRM scheme that costs a fortune to buy a license, only to end up with your target audience whining about it, and find out that it's already been cracked successfully.

I don't intend to promote or condone piracy, but just like what the Boycott Spore movement says, if you like games from EA, but you are pissed off at the company's policies, then you might resort to pirating it as a protest against their business practices.

So far there hasn't been an effective yet non-intrusive way to fend off pirates. The only way to prevent further piracy is to discourage people from downloading the game illegally, or go open-source if you can't afford to buy Windows Vista, Seven or Photoshop.

Well, despite all this, piracy is somewhat inevitable; people have been sharing stuff since the ancient times, so it's natural for buddies to pool copies of their games and warez, either physically, or online.

only way their gonna get aroud piracy is to start doing what the audio software industry does,

dongles - although getting the entire industry to use a system that uses multiple licenses on the same dongle for different games would be incredibly hard,

and again it's not full proof it can be cracked it's just alot harder.

haych-two-oh vs Cubase SX3 for example took them a good while maybe even a year to write the software that emulates the dongle, non of this same day it comes out business like securom.

But as i said if the industry doesn;t agree to one standard then you'll end up like the audio indsutry and having more dongles than you do usb ports lol.
