GTA 4 PC freezing problems

Thwhisler

Recommended Posts

I confirm the CPU heating to cause the game to freeze. (for me)

Put CPU & MB fans at max speed trough AI Suite, played for about 2h and... NO FREEZING! (knock on wood)! sigh.gif

Temps on cores of the CPU mark at about 60ºc

Playing with patch 1.0.2 and catalyst 9.1.

Settings on recommended option (high)

Resource usage stays at about 800/810Mb of 1Gb

--------

EDIT: OK... forget it! It´s the bad coding of the game that causes it to freeze! angry.gif

Today went to play a little bit and after 5min BANG!!!! Sound looping, image freezed, hard reset! suicidal.gif

--------

ANOTHER EDIT: Another crash! suicidal.gif

Tried do use -availablevidmem 1.0 -percentvidmem 1.0 in commandline.txt to check if the game would run fine and guess what? FREEZING!!!! And got this lovely BS: biggrin.gif (needless to say... another hard reset)

user posted image

previously i tried with the -memrestrict command also and it didn't freeze but the game kept lagging and lagging... at the point of impossible to play.

Conclusion: it's the f*cking memory leak issue that's crashing the game! I cant see any other possible cause.

What do think guys?! rolleyes.gif

Meanwhile going back to play Farcry2... at least i can drive, shoot, kill and do missions without to hard reset my pc! biggrin.gif

Cheers! icon14.gif

I have GTA 4 on the PC. I can get into the game and play it for around ten minutes and then (it has always happened when im in a car) the game will freeze. It will freeze my whole computer so i have to manually turn it off. This freezing does not happen only at one particular area or misson. None of the patches have fixed this. I have uninstalled/reinstalled.

My specs: (yes it is a laptop)

2.0 Ghz dual core

9800m GT

4 gigs of DDR3 ram.

All my drivers are updated.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I have Vista 64 bit

Do you have an Intel Processor or AMD.

If you have an AMD Your computer does Not Meet the minimum Requirements which is an 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2.

*tried updating your motherboard bios...

http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboa...?ProductID=2986

"The Core i7 processors also eliminate the need for the Northbridge chipset to manage system memory and link it to the processor with integrated, on die memory controller which links the processor directly to the system memory."

might be a problem there...

*Checked your ram speed and voltage?

*also a load of threads on the net about the Intel Core i7 920 CPU freezing but might not be related but to do with its temp...

*also can be a faulty board, if you contact giga-byte and ask them...

*also anyone who got a seagate barracuda hdd update the firmware... reported freezing on games with they 1.5tb and 1tb ones but might also be on others

since GTAIV wants your hdd, ram ,cpu & gpu running smooth with each other more so...

they run your cpu on the f3 one

Thanks for your deidcated reply logitechdog smile.gif

*The latest bios for my motherboard dates back to December 2008. Given that I installed the mobo about 2 weeks ago or less from the cd it shipped with, I already have the latest BIOS, right?

*Voltage on RAM is fine. 1.5 V, max for i7 920 is 1.6 .

The max speed for the i7 920 is 1066 MHz, i have 1333 MHz but tbh I assumed that the mobo would just drop the speed down automatically to the correct speed just like all other motherboards do tounge.gif However I'll check the bios settings when I restart the pc after this post.

*That one about the faulty board is just funny... The board runs everything else perfectly. This GTA IV freezing problem is one that is commonplace to people with all types of boards!

*OK, I'll look at my hard drive a bit more closely (can't remember the make tbh) and see if I can update the software for it. Though again, this freezing problem is unique to GTA IV on my system and is not limited to people using Seagates...

I doubt the above will help tbh, given that the pc essentially is running very well and its a probelm specific to the game, i.e. a bug, but it can't hurt to make sure the PC is running as best as possible. Thanks again.

erm maybe you do have latest bios, you never know until you check your bios version, as really when was your motherboard stocked, is the key question

edit:- well the asus rampage formula mobo is not freezing, also my raptor hdd, or my core2 3ghz or my 8800gtx...

waiting for a pci-e 3.0 before I think of upgrading and see what nvidia spit out as a new card with higher rated ram, most games don't even support quad, i7 seems a waste... imo

I bought the motherboard on the same day it was stocked.

Good for you! But the game does freeze for many other users.

Well, before I bought the processor I read that nvidia and amd will never catch up to intel. They are not just one step ahead, they are two steps ahead. this is a future proof processor and was the best value for money I could buy, its a good investment.

But actually if you look at benchmarks for GTA IV, i7's run faster than all, faster than Quads... GTA IV makes extensive use of multithreading, as does gta iv, so one could argue that i7 is the best choice for GTA IV.

EDIT: the hitachi site recommends that firmware is not updated if the harddrive is working normally, which it is.

EDIT 2: as I thought my RAM is running at the correct speed.

Still looking for a fix.

This is so annoying!!

1-The game freezes before the rockstar trademark at the opening credits

2-When I finally get through the opening credits (many restarts after), between 30-60 minutes of play, FPS drop dramatically down, causing the game to lag and a minute later to freeze angry.gif

HOW CAN I GET RID OF THAT AND AT LAST ENJOY THE GAME????

i think there are several things you can do.

to fix 1- create a commanline.txt in gta iv root folder (where gta launcher is) write -norestrictions save and close file. MAKE SURE you close rockstar social club and run it again so the tweak applies

to fix 2- install memturbo set both sliders to 50 and memory leak stutering is gone.

if after all that you still have freezing issues put -availablevidmem 1.0 or maybe 2.0

I'm also having the game freeze on me at random after a while.

It's definitely not graphics card temp related, as I installed an aftermarket cooler (Thermalright T-Rad2) and my gfx temps at load are now slightly less than they used to be at idle. Game still freezes.

My pc meets the recommended spec and is not overclocked. Quad Intel 2.66 and ATi 4850-1Gb card. 3.25Gbs memory. Windows XP SP3.

Finally logged a support issue with Rockstar after trying all the recommendations in the freezing threads here.

Hello people, I'd like to register that I have the FREEZING PROBLEM and I have to reset my PC when it happens.

I tested with pre-rendered frames ON (3) and OFF (0) and the problem happens on both.

I tested with two differente Nvidia drivers, the current and a little older one 180.xx.

It's a damn shame that this awesome game is so flawed for PC... I've seen a Rockstar profile posting on this forum, is that right?

So here's another plea for a serious look into this problem many PC gamers are having.

We wanna enjoy the game we paid for but we cannot...

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hello people, I'd like to register that I have the FREEZING PROBLEM and I have to reset my PC when it happens

...

EDIT: Just had a freeze, was scaring people with a shotgun and then artifacts, more artifacts, sound stutter, more stuter and complete freeze, then the monitor just went black.

Hmm this REALLY sounds like a graphics card issue... artifacts, slowing of frame rate, monitor freezing and then going black... Though the sounds stutter points to it being something else...

Let's do a trouble shooting list for EVERYONE having this issue. (I managed to fix it on my pc). Please be patient if I don't get to the GTA IV specific fixes right away, but we need to be methodical and certain about this.

- If you want this game to run even just OK you'll need more than a dual core I think. Minimum specs is just that, minimum, and with an unstable game like this you'll be lucky to ever get it running OK on a dual core. Remember that the xbox 360 has 3 cores with hyperthreading... You should also have 2 GB of RAM at least. And preferably a card with a sh*t load of memory, 1GB is nice, 2GB is better, 0.5 GB is OK. Less than 0.5 and again you'll have to be lucky to run it OK. IMO. I think in this case recommended specs is the minimum.

- Download speedfan.

- Run Prime95 for 15 minutes and have speedfan run in the backgorund. If it doesn't crash or report errors your ram and cpu are stable. Look at the speedfan charts, if all temps were normal throughout the run you can move on to next step. (Its important to check temps with charts because things cooldown very quickly once the process crashes. Peak temps could be A LOT higher than you think...)

- Play Crysis for half an hour on the best settings your pc can handle. Again monitor temps in the background with the speedfan charts. If there were no crashes, problems, artifacts, and temps were normal throughout test, your gpu is stable.

-If you have issues with these you need to fix them. Temps are easier to fix, simply sort out the cooling on your cpu and gpu. Clean the dust thouroughly etc. Maybe buy better cooler for gpu. If you have any OC's take them off and then try to OC until you can run the above two tests without issues. If you can't or can't be bothered to OC properly then just take them off and be safe.

- Defrag all your drives with auslogic and use ccleaner to clean up your registry. Use the windows disk cleanup tool on all drives.

- Make sure all your drivers are the latest. Mobo and gpu especially. Check the manufacturer's site for this. If you are using GeForce card I recommend the latest beta driver.

- If you've passed all those test you can be pretty sure the problem is with GTA IV. So let's move on to the GTA IV specific fixes.

- If you haven't already done so, re-install GTA IV and apply the latest patch.

- Try with vsync off for loading the game, and vsync on while playing.

- Make sure that you are not using a commandline.txt . If you are delete it. Then once you've deleted it make sure your graphics settings do not exceed your video card's memory. Run the game at the refresh rate you are using in windows and keep the resolution ratio the same as in windows too. Maintain all other settings at the autodetect setting for now.

- Run the benchmark. While charting temps with speedfan in the background. If you get through that with no issues that's something at least.

- Run the game with the same settings, and with speedfan in the background. See how long it runs without issues. If and when you get an issue, stop the game, and check the temps speedfan reported in the charts.

- If you are still having problems you could try reinstalling windows and doing the same all over again. Or if you are using XP you could try moving from XP to Vista 64 bit, that's part of the things I did to fix my freezing issues.

NOTE: I guarantee you one thing. GTA IV may be badly coded, it may be innefficient, it may be a sh*t port, but it CAN run without issues, a lot of people do. It's a very unstable game, so an otherwise stable pc might go nuts when it tries to run GTA IV... In other words if you have 100% stable PC with lots of power you WILL be able to run GTA IV without issues...

Good luck smile.gif

Subversion thanks for this post, nice troubleshooting stuff. I'll consider the defrag.

But I run TF2 with full AA and AF for hours with no crash, even with no air conditioner on on my room.

Crysis Wars too, no crashes while playing it.

I tested GTA4 with patch 1.01 and then 1.02, constant crashes! Every 10~20 min.

Now I'm playing GTA4 1.0, could play for like 1 hour (with 6 pre-rendered frames on driver config), but then I use cheats and start blowing stuff up, not even 5 minutes, artifacts and crash.

I played Fallout 3 from start to finish on max settings (only 2xAA tho) with no hardware crashes at all.

I can say pretty safely GTA4 is not really optimized for hardware we got today and it's a little bit funky.

My framerats don't slow down gradually for a minute and then crash, sometimes there's a minor slowdown, it freezes a bit, artifacts and screen go black, in less than 5 seconds.

I'll try patching straight to 1.02 now, with no 1.01 and see what I get.

you're welcome.

I assume Crysis Wars is the same engine as Crysis. In that case your gpu is stable. You have a special cooler, so one would guess the gpu temps are fine. But did you run speedfan in the background to monitor peak temp? Try it. It will probably be fine, but we are troubleshooting here, we need to know 100%.

I tested GTA4 with patch 1.01 and then 1.02, constant crashes! Every 10~20 min.

I agree GTA IV is unstable but we are trying to solve that smile.gif

I strongly recommend a clean, vanilla install with the latest patch applied on top through windows live. With troubleshooting we should strip it all down to the basic, safe and recommended settings. Don't bother with pre-rendered frames or other "fixes". Or 3rd party software.

HEY ALL!!!!!! I FINALLY GOT A FIX FOR THE GTA FREEZING IN PC. I AM A WORKER IN MICROSOFT COMPANY, AND I HEARD ALL ABOUT THIS FREEZING IN GTA 4 PC. WELL, THE MAIN PROBLEM WITH THE PEOPLE IS THE SLUTTERING. WELL U SHOULD UNDERCLOCK YOUR GPU, I USED RIVATUNER 2.24, WENT INTO THE DRIVER SETTINGS AND THEN WENT INTO THE OVERCLOCKING OPTION AND REDUCED CORE CLOCK, SHADER CLOCK AND MEMORY CLOCK BY 10% TO 15% DEPENDING ON YOUR GPU. AND ITS DONE, NO SLUTTERING AND FREEZING IN GTA 4 PC. HOPE IT HELPS U. BUT DONT FORGET TO DELETE THE COMMANDLINE TEXT. ITS VERY IMPORTANT THAT U DELETE AND OTHER COMMANDLINES OR TWEAKS U HAVE DONE TO THE GAME. PLAY THE GAME WITH ORIGINAL FILES.

Hey all, sorry for my bad english. i got a great fix or you can say the best fix to freezing. I tried underclocking my gpu. I swear man, there was no freezing at all. I played the game for 6 hours non stop. Before it used to freeze in 10 to 15 minutes.

I used riva tuner 2.24, went into driver setting, then overclocking setting, and reduced the core clock, shader clock and the memory clock 10%-15% from its original setting.

For example your core clock is set to 900, so 10% of 900 is 90. So reduce it to 810. Do the Same to all three.

Well it has been tried and tested and works 100%. no performance loss, no loss of frame rates nothing. Instead i had an increase in the frame rate about 20 more.

Plz brothers, try it, it really works. Hope it helps you all.

And one more thing, dont forget to delete all the tweaks, commandline file and anything other before applying this. You can use Memturbo but no tweaks in file or commandline.

Tnx in advance.

Guess what I found out?

The little two fans that blow air to the Accelero cooler fell down and had stopped, so my GPU was at 71C idle, no wonder GTA 4 would crash with 10 mins and underclock got me 1 hour of play.

I accidently found out cuz I opened my case.

Now fans are running, AC is on, my room fan pointed at the PC... No overheating and no freezing now.

My card must've been getting as hot as 90C and shutting down, lol.

And I'm running patch 1.02 (didn't apply 1.01) with stock clocks (no underclocking)...

Well so nothing is bugged here, just heat smile.gif.

Thank you all for the help.

My card must've been getting as hot as 90C and shutting down, lol.

And I'm running patch 1.02 (didn't apply 1.01) with stock clocks (no underclocking)...

Well so nothing is bugged here, just heat smile.gif.

Thank you all for the help.
