Vista has nothing to do with how you games will run. frodo baggins
What's your video card? You definitely need more ram, anyone running Vista should have at least 2GB Ram and if you want to run GTA IV decently you should have 4 RAM is really cheap these days anyway Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/390258-gta-iv-pc-helpcannot-start-gta-4/#findComment-1058847190 Share on other sites

Shadow@GTA
They used to sell Vista machines with 512MB ram back when Vista was a new thing (and it continued for a year or so). Apparently it ran on it but you should have seen the thing after installing any anti-virus software on it. It even hit the news here as obviously it was a terrible way to fool the customer. So yes, he may have 1GB of ram. As for helping this guy out... CPU: 2.7Ghz. This is most likely a dual core cpu. I imagine this should be enough for GTA IV (I managed to run it on a 2.1 myself, all low, 1280x1024, 20-30fps) even though I would personally suggest a 3Ghz quad core (game was made for 3 cores afterall). Intel seems to be the only one with a 3Ghz quad at the moment. AMD is releasing the new Phenom 2's sometimes soon and I'm keeping my thumbs up for a 3Ghz quad from them. RAM: 1GB was something you would have been proud of about 15 years ago. 4GB is a good number these days, 2 a bare minimum. 2GB is a bad idea because games today are getting to a point where they would be happy to use 2GB on their own, but since you only have 2 it means it will be sharing it with all the other applications you have running (this would normaly be about 320MB). 4GB allows your 32bit game to use the full 2GB it is allowed while leaving a nice 2GB for any other applications currently running. Also note that 32 bit systems will only use 4GB from which we reduce the amount of video memory (usually leaving you with a total of 3.5GB). In any case, a 32bit application (also applies to 32bit applications in a 64bit environment) is only allowed to allocate 2GB for itself, unless it has been specifically made to use 4GB (GTA IV hasn't). GPU: I suspect you have an integrated Intel judging by the other specs. I personally suggest using an nVidia card for this game, even though I had plans for getting 2 4870's and crossfire them. At the moment I'm just watching the situation and the whole graphics deparment is a questionmark, I don't know what to suggest. Apparently it would seem getting the newest card is a bad idea, and I got the game working on my old EN7950X2 while it lagged with 2fps on the 8800GTS (I suspect SP3 conflicts though). On all high GTA IV wants somewhere around 1500 to 1700MB of video ram. Now, such a thing doesn't exist and apparently there is some issues with the components on the current graphics card designs that keeps the cards from going any further than 1GB. So, until this is solved and we get a new design for the gpu's, we can't play this game on all high. HOWEVER, as it would seem the textures that do not fit into the video memory get dumpped into system memory you could theoretically run it like this too using extremely fast system ram. The only ram sticks I know of that could do this are the XDR sticks. Though I have yet to see one, a shop that sells one and/or a shop that sells a motherboard that uses it.
