topeira
the cover system is GTA IV works really well even without the typical cover nodes used in games like R6:vegas , GOW and uncharted BUT it's too clumsy in terms of control over niko's firing and timing. i was wondering if it can be slightly improved to become slightly more balanced and responsive: Idea number 1 - when niko is running\walking u can't see a crosshair. when u get in cover u DO get a crosshair even when u r not holding right mouse button to peak out. do u think there is a way to REMOVE the crosshair when niko is behind cover when NOT peaking his head? when he's peaking out it makes sense that he will be able to get a crosshair. Idea number 2 - when holding right-mouse-button niko is just peaking out but staying behind cover. from the moment u press the fire button niko does a "step-out" move and only then fires. this step-out makes it hard to fire in good timing. in games like VEGAS or GOW "aiming" will cause the character to step out but without firing. thus making it possible to fire in bursts and more control without the need to wait for the step out and step in animations. plus it makes more sense, realistically speaking. this is probably going too far but i would wonder if it's possible to make niko go into step-out animation when holding right-mouse button (instead of the peaking-the-head) but WITHOUT firing and only when adding the left mouse button niko will fire? this means that niko will be out of cover vulnerable as long as u hold the right mouse button, just like in other games with a more advanced cover system. ManiaChris
Yea, this both ideas are very nice. I was wondering about the first thing too many times. Why does Niko have a Crosshair when he can't see the enemies? Strange. Idea 2 is great too. You already said the reasons. Intosia
thus making it possible to fire in bursts and more control without the need to wait for the step out and step in animations. Thats indeed one thing thats annoying! Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/390170-qidea-changing-the-cover-system/#findComment-1058845935 Share on other sites
ManiaChris
Yea, it is really annoying. But I don't know if it is so easy to make... Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/390170-qidea-changing-the-cover-system/#findComment-1058846124 Share on other sites
topeira
i dont thing it's easy either. not replacing the peak animation with the step out. but i think the first idea IS easy. if the crosshair is hard coded like it is in R6:vegas than no, it isnt, but things dont seem that hardcoded in IV so im hopeing someone much more savee in coding than me would find a way to do this. the second idea should be tough and im not sure even possible. messing with animations is not something that was done in Iv before (besides slo-mos and other speed, euphoria alterations).
