Perestroika
Hey guys. I'm about to buy a new rig and I'm on low budget. There's - Athlon 6000+ (old but cheap) - Phenom X3 8650 (i heard the game uses three threads so it would be a smart decision to buy a tri-core) - C2D 7300 - C2D 8400 - C2Quad 8200 I know the last two are expensive (for me:)) but whats the best cost/performance solution for GTA4? I know you'll help me Thank you a lot Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/389826-what-cpu-should-i-buy-to-enjoy-gtaiv/ Share on other sites
livilaNic
I have a E6750 and I enjoy IV very much. I'm not sure you should base your upgrade solely on IV. What are you on now? If your standards are high then eh well I'm not sure any upgrade will suit you for this title. AA is a mess no matter how well the game (or your rig), story, etc. in itself is. livilaNic
im on two old broken computers right now In that case. Just do some research and see what best fits your needs all around. Just because GTA uses 3 cores or w/e. Doesn't mean everything does. I think you'd be safe with a C2D for at least a couple more years. If you want above and beyond now sooner then later, then go ahead and get a Quad/tri or w/e. It just depends. I don't know if theres really a clear cut answer to it. Until you evaluate all the variables yourself. Sorry I couldn't help, with the choices you provided.. RobStobbart
I'd get the E7300, as it should clock to at least 3ghz and would probably play GTA IV OK even at stock 2.66ghz. It's not too expensive, and you've got an upgrade path to replace it with a quad when you need to - they'll be getting cheaper as intel switch to newer architecture (as they've started to do). Perestroika
Thanks guys, I'm reading GTAIV bencmarks right now, seems like E8400 and Q6600 can handle it well. They're $179 & $202 here. I agree and as for the AMD ones; I wouldn't go for them...I have an old AMD and the CPU fan is working at max almost all the time. I don't know if the new ones are the same but generally Intels are much quieter. One mistake I won't be doing again, for sure.... damunk
Try and get a Q6600 G0 stepping, or if you can afford it go for a Q9550 E0 stepping. Lem-Bert
if you already have an am2+ board, you could give the new amd 920/940 a try, its also very overclockable. SFkilla
If you stay AMD, then go for a X4 9950, there prices are dropping due to the fact the new phenom II comes out this month. An Phenom X4 9950 is cheaper then a E8400 and is way better. AMD actually uses 4 real cores (unlike intel). Perestroika
thank you again. i have one more question, it may seem a lil bit offtopic, but: can i get a cheap mobo on 31 chipset or smth like that for a e8400 not affecting cpu's performance? i heard that you need advanced chipsets only if you use a lot of hdds, gpus, usb devices. and if a mobo supports fsb1333 the e8400 will work ok on it. is that true? PlatinumPC
DO NOT go for a 31 chipset IMO, they are not designed with gamers in mind. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/389826-what-cpu-should-i-buy-to-enjoy-gtaiv/#findComment-1058841742 Share on other sites
NIR_NazcaC2
I don't know why people keep saying it runs only on three cores. Using CoreTemp and watching CT in my G15 LCD panel while starting and playing IV, clearly shows all four cores (on my Q6700) at relatively the same percentage (45%-55%) per core, in fluctuations as expected. On another note, I'd certainly suggest either an E8400/8500 or Q6600 or higher. @Elysian: Regardless of the "real cores", Intel's CPU's are far more superior. The benchmarks clearly show that. Unknown Terror
I've been running a Q6600 for a while now and I couldn't be happier with it. Even though alot of games don't take advantage of all 4 cores I've never had a game that doesn't run with great FPS on the highest settings. I guess as long as the rest of the hardware can make up for it until games do, it should be just fine. shadowpope17
This Phenom x4 CPU plays GTA well. even though it dosent have a high clock speed it still gives more fps than most dual cores. nojas
If money is really tight, like mine! try an E5200. Mine goes to 3.8ghz with a little extra voltage and runs nice and cool. q6600 would be a lot better though! avoid AMD CPUS for cost/perfromance in gaming. they suck. Tantalus91
Core 2 Quads are just 2 Dual Core dies put in 1 cpus as the Phenom Quad and Triple cores are 3 and 4 completely seperate cores in 1 die. Core 2 quad = 2 Dual Cores put side to side Phenom = 1 Cpu with 3-4 Cores But intel did that for a reason as they see they can have much better performance with 2 dies then the performance with 1 die and alot of money spent developing it. As why core 2 quad surpasses phenom Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/389826-what-cpu-should-i-buy-to-enjoy-gtaiv/#findComment-1058846231 Share on other sites
