"-norestrictions" actually seems to smooth the display for the first minute or two, but after that it reverts to a slightly slower framerate, and ends up stutterring after a while. So, whilst it did seem to speed the framerate up for a while, it didn't fix the stuttering issue.

arkangel you have this problem before using memturbo?

i don't remember, but the game crashed to desktop frequently also froze several times during game with sound continuing, then it came back. After using memturbo all was solved, now that i'm getting near the end of the game crashes to desktop again (yet no stuttering) , BUT i also noticed that i had no tweaks on my shortcut, i remeber that after applying a few game rolled perfectly, gonna try them now again.

the tweaks you can add in the shortcut or commandline.txt

–norestrictions - removes graphical restrictions

-nomemrestrict - removes memory restriction.

–windowed - play in a window.

–width (value) - forces resolution width.

–height (value) - forces resolution height

–novblank - disables vsync (can improve some fps for the slower cpus)

–safemode - forces the game to run in safemode

-fullspecaudio - forces full spec audio

–minspecaudio - Forces low spec audio

optimal settings (for many):

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions -availablevidmem 1.0 -nomemrestrict -percentvidmem 100

jsut copy paste that to the targe (correcting your game location if necessary)

i will try this now, because after putting just "-availablevidmem 2.0" im still experiencing bad stuttering..

damn, anyhow i try, i still have bad stuttering.. i guess its because of the "cooling" of my laptop, it gets kinda hot when i play GTA, which results in slower performance of hardwares.. i guess.

Yes after about 15 minutes of play.

I recently installed Win 7 x64 and it seems an awful lot smoother (although I've lost my save files so I haven't really tested it too much). I'll give it a quick play.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the stuttering starts usually when my CPU hits around 55C. Sometimes I've played it for hours without a problem, other times I've struggled to get a few minutes of play out of it. AMD have never made cool processors, and this "cool and quiet" bollocks isn't very cool at all.

But it is quiet, though!

Edit 2: Now it doesn't seem to want to work in compatibility mode. Strange - it was working fine earlier on. Oh well.

Hail people

I have this pc:

5000+ AMD, 4 GB DDR2 800 (just 3 GB on 32 bit XP of course), MSI K9N Ultra m.b. and HD2600XT 512 MB VGA.

Before the 1.0.3.0 patch I didn't have problems. Finally a great ATI driver came out and so on, so I was happy. Except one thing: the game keeps pop upping very hard, even near objects sometimes. But I got used to it... And the solution was to use -nomemrestrict or some things like this. But it causes maybe memory leak? Cause BEFORE the patch when I used it, the game started to stuttering very hard in 1-2 minutes...

And what happened?

After this motherf*cking 1.0.3.0 this stuttering is in DEFAULT, so I cannot play now the game!!! f*ck it, I payed for it, I want to play the multiplayer and I have to downgrade to 1.0.2.0 to play at least for the single...

Do you have some advice for me?

I read that maybe the CPU is behind the problem... When it gets stuttering, the cpu is 100% working, not a bit little. I tried to off the coolnquiet, uninstalled some cpu drivers and so on, but nothing helps.

Where did you read this?

I dunno, some other topics where they spoke about this issue... But hey, I got a pm from R* and it seems that the issue is maybe can handle:

Are you using medium textures?

Try adjusting the number with -memrestrict. Start at the low number, and increase until you see stuttering. the lower the number the more "world popping" you will see.

-memrestrict 188743680

-memresitrct 209715200

-memrestrict 230686720

-memrestrict 262144000

-memresitrct 293601280

Yes, mine stutters after a certain amount of time (usually anywhere between 1-50 minutes after the game loads). Sometimes it will even completely hang and freeze, and I can't even exit it through task manager, I have to reboot my computer..

My specs:

AMD Athlon FX-64 dual-core processor @ 2.8GHz

2GB PC2-6400 RAM

nVIDIA Geforce 9800GTX+ 512MB/512-bit

Windows XP 32-bit

Am going to buy 8GB of PC2-6400 with lower timings and swap out the 2GB I have in there right now, and then upgrade to Vista 64-bit and see if that does the trick. I hope it does...

I will report back and see if it delays or gets rid of the hanging/freezing...

Hey hey hey, look at my previous post, that should do the trick. It worked for me (oh and my settings are not on the list either, I set 240MB to the memlimit, tried to raise it by 10Megs a time).

Good luck

i've followed the common steps to fix the stuttering but am still suffering from this issue...

i have a new hdd 320sataII, re-installed OS Windows XP SP3, and GTAIV, but the funny thing is that with my old IDE 80GB HDD the game works well non-stuttering at 1024x768(60hz) with everything on med, 15/10/10/3 (distance, textures etc.) 311mb/483 and now with my new HDD with the same specs, i cannot get a decent fps, just right from the beginning it starts to stutter.

my specs

AMD Athlon X2 64 +6000 3.0ghz

Asus M3N78-EMH HDMI (with the latest chipset drivers)

MSI Geforce 9500 GT 512M DDR3 (with 182.50 drivers)

OCZ DDR2 Dual Channel 2x([email protected])

HDD WD320GB

I think than probably my problem is with something on my drivers or os, idk, but its too weird than with my IDE 80GB HDD works well with the GTAIV_Patch_1030 but with my new SATA HDD its works bad from the beginning

if anyone knows whats happening i'll appreciate it...

Hey that's a good observation. At least maybe we know where to start to find a solution! I have SATA (ok SATA2) HDD, maybe some sort of issue is with those hardwares?...

Check the pinned topic for the use of -memrestrict command. That will help with the stutter.

Is that doesn't help, try turning off SLI. The game doesn't run well with SLI turned on. Also, make sure that you don't exceed the available resource limit.

I have

Win7

4gb ddr2 800mhz ( will be upgrading to [email protected] 2000mhz after new years)

Q6600 @ 2.4

Evga GTX 275 1792mb

my system beats the recommended system and I never had a problem till today when I updated to 1.0.0.4 patch vefore then I had 7fps now I get 20 stuttering fps which keeps dropping to .8 of a frame.

I have tried the memrestrict and the available mem plus others but none are helping. I'm about to do a repair install and revert back to patch1.0.4.0. when R* FIX there latest F8**k Up I will post back.

till then it's GTAIV 1.0.4.0

My system does this nasty stuff too!

I've noticed this little hitch for a while but it was very rare until 1.0.0.4. That patch really brings the beast out for me. I'm able to get the same behavior from 1.0.3.0 but I have to reduce the settings quite a bit for it to be as ugly as 1.0.0.4 is on my normal settings. I'm currently running 1.0.3.0 and doing "ok" but now that I've discovered this problem, I can't help but notice it (even the slight ones that weren't bugging me, make me itchy now). One strange thing to consider here, I only get the stutter at frame rates higher than 50-60 (especially crossing the 60 mark). The game runs like butter (1.0.3.0) on anything lower than 50fps.

I've graphed the behavior to show this ugliness. For me, the stutter is caused by this frame that's taking wayyyy longer than any of the others. See below where I'm showing each frame's render time (ms) for a period of just over 800 total frames (just a snap shot from a much larger FRAPS bench).

user posted image

This is patch 1.0.3.0 being forced to do it (by lower settings) but on patch 1.0.0.4 - the spikes are even more hideous, climbing well above 100ms per frame instead of the 60-70 you see here. So, because the latest patch does indeed improve the frame rate, there are no settings high enough to keep my frame rate down below the troublesome 60 mark (for me) without having other problems come up from having to drive the settings wayyyy too hard. As soon as my card gets below 18ms per frame, I'm in trouble....and, as you can see, it just hits a brick f*cking wall or something.

My specs are in my sig (Vista64). My *normal* settings are Textures: High, Reflections: High, Water: High, Shadows: Very High, Filter: Highest, View: 32, Detail: 100, Traffic: 100, Density: 16, Definition: On, VSync: Off (and running just fine that way now on 1.0.3.0). Command line presently used: -framelimit 0 -managed -norestrictions -nomemrestrict -novblank. Keeping in mind that I've tried all manners of command lines and settings too (I mean ALL and I'm not suggesting that any commands I'm using right now are of any value either, I'll wipe them likely on the next run). Also, for the graph (because I need to get the frame rate high enough to cause the problem) shadows were turned OFF and much more minimal settings were used. It was a stuttering nightmare and the frame rate was anywhere from mid 50s to mid 80s during the bench.

I've never seen GTA consume more than 1.8 GB of RAM but it's obviously carrying a lot more weight than that judging by the system commit level (by that's obviously hardware memory usage, other software/system stuff). This is a non issue for me though as I have a good amount of RAM. The game is damn stable too. I think it has only ever crashed one time in 8 months and it alt-tabs without any difficulty at all. The system seems rock solid while playing/doing anything else (also not showing any unusual behavior from sensors or monitoring software).

I've been wondering lately if GTA just can't keep up with me or something....code is hitting a choke point or something, I dunno. I'm kidding about as much as I am serious...
