Eminence
I do agree with your point, Otter, about the positives of the possible publicity it could generate, but at the same time fail to see how that publicity would necessarily be garnered - as the awards remain internal, nothing is going to change to make outsiders see it and take note of it anyway. And on that note, I also agree with you, Frank, regarding the mundane categories and topics currently being suggested - it's for this reason that I just think the whole idea seems pointless and serves nothing but elitism, as there's nothing to these awards. I'm not so sure how something would be formatted for the SSOTM competition, but it's all still open for debate as far as I'm concerned.
Wanted Assailant
Which regular here is actually an egomaniac? I wouldn't be bugged about the results of a 'Writer's Award'. It's nothing more, really.
Lochie_old
I think its about time us writers got some recognition, the only way to do this is with awards. Look at pieces with such high-caliber such as Hatchet Man, Ghost, GTA: San Andreas Stories and the Dysfunktionals. These truly deserve higher praise then just the small group who huddle together in Writers' Discussion. This couldn't cause elitism because everyone has already stated that they are trying to avoid that. Craig has set these awards up with good intentions only to help recognize some of the pieces that have set the bar for what standards we accept in WD. I'm sure before Typhus joined he wouldn't of cranked out something as good as "Squashing the Love Bug". This place has helped changed a lot of us and I think our works need to be recognized rather than cursed to the deep dark catacombs that is page three and beyond. Vercetti21
I agree with Otter here. While there is the risk of elitism, I think the benefits outweigh the negatives in that not only do we recognize the pieces which deserve recognition, it may also bring outsider attention to appreciate writer's work as well. However, E, I do see your point: why do we need to recognize each others work? We should come here to write, not congratulate each other. But see, I think putting pieces in the spotlight like this is more for everyone else rather than the writer of the piece. It's not so much a pat on the back as it is a "hey, you guys need to check this sh*t out". Even so, I think regulars here are mature enough to be able to accept gratitude of their work without getting cocky. The only issue for me is whether or not it's worth the time and effort. That said, I think we should either have this, or Ryan's Hall of Fame idea. Something to bring attention to some great works here. But not both. Canofceleri
Here's the model I propose. Each month, via a thread specially named for this, we have write-off contests. We keep the themed short contest and introduce a non-themed general short story contest. Given the fact that poems and other non-narrative are so rare in this community, we'd not have a non-narrative contest as most likely nominees would be very limited. With each new month, we fuse with the contests two separate ideas which will serve to satisfy those looking for more recognition-based categories. The first, is to implement the hall of fame idea. With the outcome of the SSOTM winners we'll also display the results with links of the voting on which two pieces will be added to the hall of fame. So in addition to winners for original work, two writers will have older pieces added to a hall of fame list. The other idea, is possible essays that could be included in this monthly ordeal. Say, include in it my featured essay which attempts to give insight into the themes and ideas behind Vercetti21's work. I think this format leaves it wide open and exciting. It's like a contest/hall-of-fame/retrospective/newsletter hybrid that multiple people could contribute to. If you guys like this, I'd enjoy seeing it through. Rhoda
I'm putting this on hold for now. May re-boot this concept for later this year but for now I'm shelving it as people need to have far more fun here.
