I think Mercury and Deacon were pushing for a more motown/soul approach at the time, as referenced by songs like One Year of Love (Deacon) and Pain Is So Close to Pleasure (Mercury and Deacon). Both songs were written within the same time frame as Gimme the Prize, which was composed by May.
