Copies of GTA4 on different computers

Recommended Posts

I have a question that I'm rather sure of the answer to, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. I purchased GTA4 previously for the 360, and I don't use/want 360Live, so when I heard it was going to come out for the PC, my brother and I knew we would buy it. Now, with most games these days, that would involve us having to spend $100 so that we get different cd keys so we avoid punkbuster issues. First of all, I'm pretty sure GTA4 doesn't use punkbuster, so couldn't my brother and I just use the same cd key, and then we'd just have different R* Social Club and Widnows Live accounts, and then we'd be two different players who could play in a server together, right?

The other thing I noticed is that on steam it says this...

Obviously, that means I can activate it on an infinite amount of computers, but we this let my brother and I play together and still only spend $50, rather than $100?

I'm sorry if there's already a thread about this, the search function seems broken and I don't really have time to look through 119 pages of threads.

Thanks.

I think the "unlimited activations" thing is more for one person that would play on two different machines. For example, if I have a system at home and one at work I wouldn't need to buy two copies of the game to play in both places. I could simply just take the CD with me to whatever system I want to play on and go from there. If I purchased the game via Steam or another digital distribution outlet, I wouldn't even need the disk and I could just log into my account and play.

You might be able to get away with single player on two different machines with one copy of the game, though you'll certainly need the disk to get the game started on each. You'd also need to have a local GFWL profile on each machine and *not* sign into the Social Club. If you're on Steam or another digital distribution service where you have to "log in", this becomes a bit trickier as most of them don't allow multiple logins on different PC's. In other words, if you log in on one you'll be signed out of the other, etc.

As already stated by another poster, multiplayer would be completely off limits as your online "profile" is tied to the CD-key. You and another person would not be able to log on together. You'll need to purchase another copy of the game for you both to play online simultaneously.

it is in fact possible to register multiple gfwl accounts with the same key, and play together online with the same key.

For right now it might work w/ two accounts like that, but if they had a policy change in the future you could be boned. But it looks like Rock* doesn't give a crap and things aren't likely to change any time soon...so game on icon14.gif
