Keep getting a blank screen on startup

Recommended Posts

I recently installed GTA:SA v1.00 on my PC and I have trouble starting up.

I have XP home edition SP2 with:

- Intel Pentium 4 1.80 GHz

- 1GB of RAM

- 256MB Video card (GeForce FX5200) (driver updated)

- Intel AC'97 Audio Controller

- DirectX 9.0

I installed it once before and I had the same issue. But I thought it was because of my video card, which was a GeForce mx400 and I only had half the RAM. I upgraded my PC since, I have another 512 stick of RAM and a slightly better video card but GTA:SA still doesn't work.

I installed GTA:SA and I got a Hoodlum NOCD patch but it doesn't work. When I open up SA I get the HD logo thing then NVidia and a blank screen. I don't know if it's relavent but the NVidia logo doesn't disappear completely, it just fades off into the background. (It does NOT crash to the desktop, it just stays that way till I kill the task)

What I have to do then is end the task through the Task Manager, and what I noticed was that gta_sa.exe was not using any CPU memory, it was just there.

One more thing, the copy I have of GTA:SA works just fine. I installed it on my laptop and had no trouble at all, but the other day while I was on my boat the laptop decided to go for a swim and I haven't used it since xD

I know it is a pretty old game but I enjoyed playing it.

This happened to me when I deleted the GTAtitles.mpg and Logo.mpg files from the movies folder. Check whether you have those files present in C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\movies\

If not, have you tried pressing 'Spacebar' or 'Enter' after the Nvidia logo fades? Try it.

And don't post huge images that stretch the page. I have edited the second image with a thumbnail for you.

Thanks for the reply biggrin.gif

Both GTAtitles.mpg and Logo.mpg are present and work properly with Windows Media Player.

I tried pressing the Spacebar and Enter but neither work.

Running it in Windows 98 comaptibility mode didn't work either.

Any other possible solutions? dontgetit.gif

And I apologize for the huge image blush.gif

Try running the game as "Administrator". As Girish said this might happen due to some files which might be corrupted or missing. Re-install the entire game and see what's the result. If you've installed any mods, remove them and then play icon14.gif .

I tried running the game as administartor but it didn't work. I also tried to reinstall it but I still have trouble. I don't have any mods installed.

I really appreciate all the help biggrin.gif

Try disabling all other programs in Task Manager. Type msconfig.exe in the Run... command and choose Diagnostic startup. Now, only Microsoft Services will run, so that you can see if the problem was related to such a program. And post again if the soblem is prolved.

Hope it helps.

Edit: Removed certain unnecessary things.

I tried that but it didn't work.

But I managed to solve the problem, in a way.

I was trying to run GTA on Windows XP Home edition.

So i figured maybe that's the problem and I got XP Professional, and sure enough GTA worked on XP Professional.

So the problem was either with my copy of Windows or something wrong with the XP Home edition that interfers with GTA.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I appreciate it! biggrin.gif
