GTA IV @ Windows Vista vs Windows 7 Comparision

I tried Win7, but it still sucks too much to even use... sad.gif

No audio drivers, fine, I can deal with that, its still beta...

No ethernet drivers, well, thats a pain, but bearable...

So I trudge past the above issues, only to hit another snag, it doesn't see my secondary partition, so I have to set it up in disk management, ok, so I fix that, then I try setting up system to try a game out, after minutes of clicking around blindly till I found the new homes of old stuff, I finally get it all setup,..

(Installed directx 9 too, why isn't this already installed??? It comes with .Net, DX10, but they don't throw in DX9, are they high??)

So anyways, I start the game up, menu loads, try to loading up my save game, and nothing, just sits there loading forever, waited like 5 minutes, its not working, so I alt-tab out, close the .exe, Win7 instantly loses every setting change I had made, my resolution changed, my dual monitor settings, everything..

Not only that, but my mouse starts acting up, it works, then stops, works then stops, etc, etc,..

I reboot the computer, fire up XP, boom BSOD, what?? My XP has been stable for 3 years now, I installed on a separate partition, thats not right, not right at all...

I reboot again, it works this time, I get to the password screen of XP, enter my password, boom BSOD, FUUUCCKKK!!!!

I try one last time, finally it works, I format the Win7 partition, and decide to stick with XP until they make an operating system that doesn't suck ass..

I'm sorry, it seems faster, and it doesn't quite suck as bad as Vista, and its even faster than XP, but, as you can see, speed isn't everything, hopefully they get the above issues sorted, I might give it another chance.. It is a beta after all..

This was with the latest official beta 7000 off the Microsoft site... Win7 64bit...

--------------

Edit:

Oh, my GTAIV comparision..

Win7= Nothing...

Vista= Plays, but slowly..

XP= Plays Slow, but not as slow as Vista...

So its XP for the win.. (WinXP 64bit SP2)

What are you talking about? All vista drivers are compatible.

Im even running creative Alchemy on it.

Strange you have bsods, it could be due hardware/driver failure.

Well, for me its almost like vista almost like xp, both worked the average same fps (around 40), however the lags seen less on w7.

Since my performance on both vista and xp are similar, and on several situations w7 is doing good, im sticking with the last.

Vista detected all my hardware just fine, Win7 didn't, don't know why..

And no, nothing is failing on my system, running XP right now, everything working as intended, same system,.. So it had to be their drivers...

So it seems you just got lucky, or I got unlucky, either way, it didn't work out very well for me.. I had heard good things, and I was hoping for the best, and it failed miserably... sad.gif

I can't figure out how it made XP BSOD, thats just wrong, I have never had an OS on a second partition affect the other OS before, ever..

There must be something wrong in the boot manager(for dual booting), or something, because that shouldn't be possible...

Its probably the drivers. What specs are you in?

I updated (via device manager) all drivers to mobo and video.

EDIT

Also for optimal peformance, w7 or any OS should be installed on first partition of any disk, thefore its advicable to have one disk per os.

if you are getting rmn errors or resc10 make sure you dont have compatibility mode set on any of the game exes or rsgc.exe.

heres how i installed it.

set compatibility mode on the setup.exe on the dvd. launch it. dont use the autorun.

install it like normal. activate and all that. then launch rockstar social and update it. get the games for live update. make sure all the redistributables are installed. then launch the game with no compatibility modes.

this is the last benchmark i made before installing windows 7 cats 8.12

a note for this one is that it didnt save the settings i had. i just backed up my settings from vista and stuck em in the windows 7 install. i also notice that it never seems to save my settings now and back in vista. everytime i go to the graphics settings they are back on auto detected. so theres a bit of skew *MAYBE* i say maybe because i was cpu limited in this game. at 640x480 with everything on low and on 1280x1024 with everything maxed the difference in framerate was 5fps. on lowest the avg was 19fps on highest the fps was 23. so i dont think the diff in framerate can be attributed to the small difference in settings.

also take note on my system memory usage.

This one is after i noticed the settings were different and i decided to use the settings i saw in some review.

These settings are close to what i used on the vista benchmark.

after seeing that huge boost just for running my memory above stock after having it been basically underclocked all this time. i play with the settings. drop down the draw distance and max out the detail distance. this is pretty much free. detail dist = anisotropic quality.

as you can see cpu maxed, ram at 76% gpu only at 67%

ive currently dropped my clock down to 2.66ghz so i can run my ram 1:1 at 800mhz ill test and post results later.

above switchign to windows 7 the biggest gains for me was overclocking my ram.

Why the hell are you doing that? Didn't you know that Microsoft got rid of that stupid Audio DRM System and DirectSound3D is now back to what it was in XP?! (Supports Hardware Acceleration)

PC Users rejoice, you can now enjoy 3D 5.1 Sound in all games again without having to buy a X-Fi/Audigy 2

Hi there!

Why did you open a new Thread?

Because the old one was spammed by a discussion. icon13.gif

What do you want to show us?

Im comparing , how GTA IV runs on Vista, and on Windows 7.

Will there be Screenshots?

Yes there will be, but not yet, im still in the installation process!

Do you have an illegal copy of Windows 7 Beta?

No! im a chosen person for the beta!

But the beta will be out for everyone (legal) in a while! (statement from microsoft)

Which programs do you use for the comparision?

Im using Fraps.

Whats your progress now?

I will post my progress in new replys, when im finished, i´ll edit this post!

My progress now :

-Creating partition for installing Windows 7 Beta <Done

-Installing Windows 7 <Done

-Getting Internet connection <Done

-Installing Rockstar Games Social Club <Done

-Installing GTA IV <Done

-Activating GTA IV (Serial etc.) <In Process

-Run GTA IV correctly on Windows 7 < 0%

-Making Screenshots from GTA IV on W7 and Vista. <0%

Disclaimer:

Dont do this if you dont know what youre doing! and dont go and give rockstar games the fault, when you have any problems with playing gta iv on the windows 7 beta, because its called BETA ! Beta is not the final version and so nothing is sure that you wont have any problems, you cant easily go to microsoft or rockstars and say you have a problem!

So dont do this when you dont know what youre doing"

Dude i will install GTA 4 on this computer:

GRAPHIC CARD:ATI FROM 2007

HARD DRIVE: 98 GB

RAM:1 GB

GRAPHIC CARD:512 GB

OPERATIVE SISTEM:WINDOWS XP PROFESIONALL

AND THAN NOW I LOOKING FOR THE GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE UPDATE,BUT I CANNOT FOUND IT ON ANY LINK WITH ANY BROSWER I GUES YOU CAN HELP ME:BUY

dont believe this bullsh*t!

So it had to be their drivers...

right, from the manufacturer and not MS so i dont get it why u moan about windows7?

I had three complaints with the OS, two of them centered around the fact that they didn't include drivers for my sound card, or ethernet card, Win7 uses Vista drivers, and Vista had drivers for these devices, right out of the box Vista detected both devices..

So that's a valid complaint, they pretty much forgot to include drivers for my hardware this time around..

The last complaint was due to BSOD's, which again was their fault, I made a new partition for Win7, I had just checked both partitions for errors, none, installed Win7, boom, damaged boot sector...

As for the comment you quoted..

The person I was talking to, gave me the choice between, my hardware, and their drivers, since I had just checked hardware, and it was fine, I said drivers..

I wasn't trying to argue with him over semantics, like you seem to be doing with me, but if you want to get technical, it wasn't the drivers, it was their code...

Their drivers were missing, and their code is lacking, happy now, I clarified the problem for you... smile.gif

--

Edit: Btw, they are semi-responsible for drivers, they digitally sign them, that is to say, they approved them, which means they are MS tested, and certified drivers..
