[MenaceMovies]
I'm sure the admins and mods here already know and have tried this already on those previously banned members which constantly return, and I'm not sure how it would work on a forum. But are range bans possible? Just incase you are unsure of what a range ban is, it's where (I think, from what I've been told) you ban that persons whole town, region or country. You probably have already tried this, but I think its worth suggesting just in case. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/388598-range-bans/ Share on other sites
Rhoda
I'm not sure that'd be a good idea, as I know of many GTAF members who live in the same areas. Excluding a whole area for the actions of one particular knob is a bit harsh. Oh it's possible, but we'd be in danger of wiping out other legit users, not to mention it doesn't exactly take much to use a proxy. Banning a particular IP range (for example 88.108.*.*) is the easy way to do it, but we'd prefer not to. Not to mention, yes we get PBMs back spamming up the place, but as it takes about 5-10 seconds to ban that account and bin the topic, it's not exactly that much of an issue for staff. Girish
,Dec 30 2008, 00:27] you ban that persons whole town, region or country. Dude, you can't be serious. Imagine a serial spammer(s) from the UK and the mods apply a IP range ban on him. What happens then? No one from the UK can register anymore onto the site and considering that majority of the users are from UK, that'd be robbing the forums of some serious amount of users and possibly potentially good future members too. It takes less time to ban a PBM than what it takes for the PBM to create a new email and then register a new account. Besides, what would the mods do if there were no PBMs? You should know how they love banning PBMs. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/388598-range-bans/#findComment-1058823348 Share on other sites

And yes, it's a lovely little power trip for us. I'm on 11 today. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/388598-range-bans/#findComment-1058823373 Share on other sites
flicko
The forums are mostly populated by US citizens, racking up around 25% of all registered members here on GTAF. Because one Twat continues to create multiple accounts, you'd be willing to have 25% of this communtiy wiped out? That's around 60,000 members! I'd be guessing quite a few moderators and admins are from USA as well. The moderators are here to do a job, let them do it. Mainland Marauder
If they took a scorched-earth approach to stamping out PBM trolls then we'd not have a forum to speak of for a long time. There were people coming back from the dead and spamming long before Asmo and friends, and they've come from everywhere. There is the concept of limiting newly-created accounts from posting images, although I don't know how much that would interfere with the workings of some things (e.g. accounts that are created specifically for MP clan topics). I'm thinking along the lines of pre-empting the gay porn and whatnot that's popped up recently. Koik
http://www.isarapix.org/pix57/1230604857.jpg My MGSF range ban. But yes I am pro for this idea. Although is is pretty funny when PBM's come back and cause sh*t. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/388598-range-bans/#findComment-1058824919 Share on other sites
Wightboy
we range ban people... IP address banning we call it in the business (i speak as a collective persona as I administrate several gaming servers) but sometimes in wierd cases you get 2 genuine people with the same IP becuase their routers reset and change IP's ect letting the old person back in and blocking sometone else so its a very glitchy system. Otter
IP range banning is ridiculous, especially considering the fact that I'm constantly posting from various locations AND via proxy often as well. If there's an issue, it'd be better resolved with stricter registration policies instead. But then we'd lose those thousands of fluff accounts that serve nothing more than to make the place more attractive to advertisers. ...right? Raindancer
I think we should ban AOL The fact is, if some head dick wants to Spam these forums, 2 seconds on Goggle and you have more proxies than you can shake a ban stick at. But I am up for having a laugh, we can start with the U.K tomorrow and have our own little Mexican ban wave across the planet.
