What will show 2GB Vram or more?

Recommended Posts

I just dont get it.

I crossfired 2 HD4870X2 2GB cards (4GB and 4GPUs with 3 linked) and it still shows only 1GB of ram.

What will it take for it to naturally show 2GB or more to max out all the settings?

I tried the commandline.txt trick and for 15 mins it ran way better with much less re-rendering textures.

I was in awe.

So what is needed to unleash max settings with no tricks?

Are you using flashed bios (there are official ones that do not void warranty for Sapphire cards)? Sadly, you may be operating on a single GPU and a single card (even in other games). Cat 8.12 has been disabling either an entire card, or one of each GPUs.

it will not show 2gb ever

as far as im aware crossfiring cards or sli for that matter does not add up the memory,

crossfire duplicates all data into both sets of memory so they both only have 1gb,

and seeing as an x2 is just crossfire cards on the same PCB each core has 1gb so the game will only show 1gb as it can only address 1gb as it duplicates the same data into the other 1gb on the card

so if you have 2 x 4870x2s im assuming it does the same but splits the workload into 4 instead of 2 but still duplicates all the data into each cores addressable memory.

Crossfire does work.

I had all 4 GPUs sharing the work but is really unnecessary.

Just 1 card is enough for all the work.

Still, if SLI or CF will never show 2GB then what would?

A single GPU with 2GB or more assigned to that single GPU?

Does such a card even exist?

I still want to know what would make that game show more than 1GB naturally.

yes a card with a single core with 2gb would show up as 2gb.

and no i don't think it exists at the moment.

Such a card does exist but not for mass consumption... I remember seeing a 4GB+ card at a Hong Kong Computer Expo aimed at graphics design industry. Asking price is like 10x the 4870x2....

EDIT: As far as my memory serves... it was only DDR3

yeh you can get developers cards and professional cards that have removable memory modules so you can just stick more/bigger modules in.

not sure if they're any good in gta 4 though lol

no consumer cards to be had though i don't think.

Yeah... I wasnt trying to say its good for GTA4, simply stating the fact that such cards do exist...

With a quick Google search... Heres a link for support sake... tounge2.gif

lol wasn't saying you were laughing at imagining some rich kid buying one just to get gta 4 to work having no idea what its real purpose is lol

Lord Illicious

That is just great. What the hell were they thinking when making this game?

Any other game like this? Crysis maybe?

Guess we better start saving up for 2036 for GTA5 which will support 12GB vram but thoes cards wont come out till 2044.

Start taking your vitamins and ass medicines cus many will be sitting here waiting.

First confirmed manufacture (ATI or NVIDIA card) to fully allow GTA4 to run on its full power with no bullsh*t 2GB fake adverts will get my support.

I could imagine some desperate kid trying to max out every little detail of GTA4 and will go out buying a card like this which will probably cost twice his rig and then finding out his 1000Watt PSU is not capable of powering up his 200watt card along with the amount of neon lights in his box and fan controllers... and the story goes on...

Speaking of which... my 1100watt PSU is struggling just to run my single 4870x2... when I plug in the 2600XT so I can boot into MacOSX the 4870x2 wont even start

No one is bullcrapping you... just that current technologies for graphics card dont allow it to share the same memory for multiple cores like CPUs do...

Even tho you dont have 2GB of unique memory... your card is processing twice as fast for it to need less aparent unique memory.

EDIT: but even if you get the Quadro FX 5800 4GB... you still cant play GTA4 the way you hope it'll play... cos the game is just a mess... but the game has treat me well tho... atleast better than most

seriously? lol how much stuff have you got in there!

Im still only on a 650w psu a good one and it only has to run one 4870 but still maxing out a 1100w psu is an achievement!

Not much really... but sometimes my NZXT Sentry LX wont power up correctly and thus my fans wont come on and its ZOMG!

Gigabyte P35DS3P

Q6600 @ 3 - 3.6Ghz / Zalman 9600

8GB RAM

8x HDD

2x Optical

2x 12cm Fan

1x 4870x2 2GB

I think it is safe to say that... at this stage... it really wont matter what card you have until the game is fixed...

Well if there is no card on the market to offer true 2GB or more for a single GPU then RS (their maxed vram settings) are bullsh*tting people for the time being.

Just to let yall know my personal specs:

Intel Extreme QX9650 3.0Ghz

Asus Maximus Formula II

8GB DDR2 RAM 1066

Asus HD4870x2 2GB

Vista 64

Im no expert but i build rigs and sell a few locally and do much testing for applications so i dont want to bullsh*t my customers.

Also, even crossfired 2 HD4870x2s with the commandline.txt trick the game still shows artifacts and many other bugs.

Just looking for answers thinking it may just be this particular game.
