SLi my 8800?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just got this game and my 8800GT 512MB just isn't cuttin' it.

I'm thinking I'm gonna through down a hundred bucks and SLi my 8800s, but is it worth it?

Is anybody playing with 8800GT Sli.. What kind of FPS are you getting

I would get the GTX280 but its $400....

Also, I have the EVGA 8800, would it SLi properly with a BFG because I can't seem to find EVGA 8800's anymore.

Can I buy a 1GB 8800 or do I need another 512?

FULL SPECS:

Q6600 Processor

EVGA 8800GT 512

3GB Ram

I don't know too much about the compatibilities but I think you need to have the exact same card if you wnana do SLI..

My GTA 4 runs flawlessly on the highest settings and I have 1x 8800 GTS 640mb, so if your 8800GT gfx card doesn't cut then perhaps it's opther parts of your computer. I think the main problem is alot of people who don't particularly take care of their systems, just clog it up with tonnes of software and never perform maintenance.

Even if you do SLI, which I did previously when I had a BFG 8800 Ultra OC - be aware that you'll come across SLI stutter. This makes the framerates choppy and occurred with numerous games. However, not all games perform the same so you may have better success than others.

In your case, I'd suggest a one-card solution. What's your budget like?

Even if GTAIV supported SLi which currently doesn't, keep in mind that SLi doesnt automatically double performance or video memory. I wouldn't recommend SLi at all, it won't work on several games at their release date and power consuption will be much bigger than changing the graphics card.

Save money and when you can wait any longer get the best card you can, but keep in mind a gtx280 won't work at max unless your CPU is on par. A Q6600 is not bad i think but im not sure, so you should check several benchmark sites and investigate before buying anything.

Ok, so reviving this topic, I decided not to go SLi and get a single card. I was looking at the 9800s but I don't know

I'm going nvidia as I don't like ATI.

I would like to spend around $200 or less.. that SHOULD get me something better than my 8800GT, right?

What do you recommend

BTW, I'm aware CPU is kinda more important than GPU in this game, but still

The 9800GTX+ (512 MB) is give or take on par with the 8800 Ultra, exceeding and slightly lower with games @ $180-$200 USD.

Yes, this card performs better than your 8800GT.

Better? Yes, but how much better will ultimately depend on what resolution he runs his games in. $180-$200 better? I'm not so sure, but I guess that's for the OP to decide. The 8800GT was a pretty powerful card in its day, with most independent reviewers showing that it rivaled the performance of an 8800GTX, particularly at resolutions at or below 1680x1050.

I'm just not sure the increase in performance will justify the cost of a 9800GTX. If it were me, I'd consider a GTX260 as a viable upgrade, with a good compromise between performance and price. If you can find one, the 192 core version can be had for as low as $200-$220 USD after discounts, rebates, etc. Even the 216 core versions are going for around $260 - $280USD, much lower than the OP's stated $400 price maximum.

Before considering any upgrade though, the matter requires some perspective. Is the OP hoping to max out GTAIV? If so, I don't think any current card is going to get him there. What are the other hardware specs, particularly the CPU, like? If he's running a Pentium dual-core or low end Core 2 Duo, a newer video card isn't going to help him as much as he might think. A very fast Core2Duo or, even better, a Core2Quad or i7 may be a better bet.

you CAN sli different manufacturers. the only difference between different manufacturers is the cooler (sometimes) and the sticker. also, you can sli different clock speeds, and different memory sizes. only for clock speeds it will run at the slower clock, and for memory you have to use "coolbits" to make your 1GB only use 512mb. but. you will NOT see muhc performance increase because GTA IV is more CPU Dependant than GPU.

@neildittmar: If you had read the first post, you would have known what his CPU is like - Q6600. That's certainly fine. He already stated he wants to spend no more than $200 and obviously he doesn't want to run GTA:IV maxed out, because budget comes first. He'd certainly benefit from this leap. Although, I'd certainly suggest the 200 Series, it's not within his stated budget - as he stated lower than $200.

Not sure why your 8800GT isn't cutting it. Mine is cutting it just fine. Not sure what in your system couldn't be cutting it though.

I know to some this bench is sh*t. To me the in game is great. It seems to me the more you push this game (or your hardware for that matter) the better it performs lol. So I think you should fine with your 8800. Maybe you just need to find your sweet spot.

I also use commandline.txt

-width 1920

-height 1080

-refreshrate 60

-availablevidmem 1.5

EDIT: I'd also like to mention I just replaced my monitor. Was running @1280x1024 same sets for 90+ hours playtime. Had a few crashes here and there, but that was mostly my fault. Trying out different commandline parameters and what not. I recently re-installed and played for 10+ hours playtime and no crashes or slow downs at all.

If livil's playability is fine, I'd certainly suggest to you (elitemarine) to try to match his settings as much as possible. If GTA:IV is one of the games that you play lately, your 8800GT will likely be fine for the rest of the games out there as most would play well with your setup (if you want to save your monies).
