GTA IV PC: Missing textures.

Recommended Posts

So, after hours scouring the internet and trying different solutions, I still have the same problem -- missing textures. Just to clarify the problem, this is what I am experiencing:

user posted image

(Not my picture, but same problem).

Basically, I start playing the game, and textures gradually get worse until they no longer even display. Changing or lowering the video settings hasn't helped. The game never crashes ( I can still move around, drive, etc.).

I just upgraded my PC and installed fresh XP yesterday. These are my system specifications:

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9950 BE 2.6 GHZ

RAM: G.Skill DDR2 2GB 1066

MOBO: Asus M3A79-T Deluxe

OS: Windows XP 64 SP2

PSU: ABS Tagen BZ 700W

GPU:ATI Radeon HD4870 512M (Sapphire)

-Catalyst Version: 9.1

Unless I am quite mistaken, I easily meet the minimum requirements.

I have tried several "solutions" with no avail:

(1). Updated ATI graphics drivers.

(2). Removed and reinstalled graphics drivers. I used the driver scanner in safe mode to remove all driver remnants.

(3). Manually installed the GTA IV Title Update.

(4). Tried numerous command line options with no visible improvement.

(5). Tried this recommended solution.

(6). Systweak CacheBoost. Worked but caused huge slowdown.

Does anyone know of anything else/different to try? Is anyone still having this problem?

I have seen a lot of "Nvidia" fixes. Does anyone know of anything else to try for ATI?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Tried the solution mentioned above. Textures still disappear eventually.

I found that running Systweak CacheBoost (a 3rd party program which frees up memory) does keep the textures from disappearing. However, running the program during gameplay causes a very significant slowdown. It just isn't worth playing.

I guess I am just going to have to wait for new drivers.

Rockstar should be ashamed.

I have the same problem on XP X64. One way I have found to bring the textures back temporarily, is go to the "game" option when the textures disappear and turn clip capture on, than back off again and return to game, textures will fade back in and remain for awhile. Oddly enough, I don't have this problem in Vista X64. I have the 15 minute slowdown on Vista, but at least the game looks good. Lol. I think the game was coded better for Vista than XP.

Yes, I am starting to believe that XP 64-bit has something to do with my problems.

Some users reported having to update this cards BIOS.  Please check if this P/N matches your card so we can eliminate this possibility:

P/N:188-01E85-001SA,SKU#11133-00-XXR ONLY

Yes, that is my P/N.

Mine from of the box:

PN 188-01E85-001SA

SKU# 11133-00-20R

From your post, I am confused if you mean that I do need to update my bios, or don't.

Anywya, thanks.

Well, I have looked extensively into flashing my cards bios, but it appears I already have an up-to-date bios.

According to my Catalyst Control Center:

BIOS Version 011.010.000.002

BIOS Part Number 11X-1E8501SA-001

BIOS Date 2008/09/08

If these aren't the newest, then I will update.

Also, it appears that people with wrong bios suffer crashes, not missing textures.

Rockstar techs, if you want to reproduce this problem for yourselves, install the game on a machine running 2 gigs of ram, Windows XP X64 and virtually any ATI card (I have an HIS X1950pro 512mb) and you will run into this problem within 15 minutes of play.

Intel Q6600 Quad @ 2.4

Mushkin Extreme Performance DDR2 2GB

HIS X1950pro 512mb

XP X64

Vista X64 which doesn't have this problem but slows down after 15 minutes and becomes unplayable. Either way, I can't play the game right.

I have the same problem with XP 32bit. 7950GT, 1GB ram.

i have installed Titile Update 1 from rockstar + nvidia driver 180.84 from nzone.

Wait for the second patch which will fix this problem (Stuttering/slowness and Missing textures)

i've got the same problem too dude, to fix this i change my os to 32bit edition

i have this issue on my main system but it's 32 bit xp not 64 so it's not a 64 bit issue. and i have a 7300 gt nividia card so it's not just an ati issue either.

i just don't have time ph34r.gif :

i just figure out the proplem becase i have the same what you all have " missing texture "

and the proplem is that we all use xp sp2 whene the want sp3

mybe some of you don't belive it but it's true, no command line or any thing after today < i got sure from two people i know and they reporting the game work fine with what i talking about " misssing texture " or the " the big mas" so i show them the photo like your photo whene all the worlde be invisbal and they shock and told me "we didn't have the proplem even close to that you showing us and i'm also use xp sp2

so there is no 64bit - sp3 monocle.gif

you need xp sp3 < and its just 32bit only no 64bit icon14.gif

The box clearly states "Enhanced for 64-bit."

The word "Enhanced" implies not only that the should game run, but that it might also run "better" than normal.

If, in fact, the problem is caused by running XP-64bit, then the problem is with Rockstar, not me. There is no way I am going to change operating systems just to play GTA IV, and no sane person would expect me to do so.

Edited by FlipWillie

SP2 is the latest service pack for XP64 so don't let anyone fob you off telling you thats the problem. The problem is piss poor programming, rushed in time for an xmas release...

With regard to the 'enhanced for 64-bit' it has not been changed to run in 64-bit mode, check your Task Manager while the game is loaded... it says gtaIV.exe*32 meaning its a 32 bit application. I have made a formal complaint regarding this today, as it is false advertising.

I advise you ring customer support and make a complaint as legally they have to respond. This forum is just something to distract us (it's cheap and stops people making formal complaints so they can save on call centre costs).

Here's the website with the number.. http://www.rockstargames.com/support/req_support_contact.php

[it's not free of course... us paying customers don't deserve that priviledge]

Also, advise anyone you know whose going to buy the game to download it instead.

See my post for more info regarding the x64 / texture problem;

Thank you and goodnight.

I am updating my thread in case anyone is wondering how things are coming.

I just updated my GPU drivers to Catalyst 9.1. Still no dice.

Rockstar, I am curious... You do recognize that the "missing texture" issue is a major problem in GTA IV, right?

It would be of great consolation to me if I knew that you were indeed aware of the issue and working on a fix for it. I haven't heard anything from you guys in a while.

Thanks!

Safe Mode driver clean and display driver reinstall. Fail.

Please HELP!

Update:

I installed GTA IV on my older desktop computer to see if it would have the same issues as my m9700. I expected It would because it doesn't meet the minimum system requirements.

Windows XP Pro SP3

DirectX 9.0c

Intel Pentium 4 SL7PP CPU 3.4GHz HT

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB

3GB Ram

GTA IV works with no Graphic/Video Issues (Low FPS) :

Statistics

Average FPS: 9.51

PLEASE explain why GTA IV runs with no Graphic/Video Issues on 6800 Ultra (Low FPS), but the 7900 GS runs with missing textures (ROADS AND BUILDINGS ECT.)
