Paigey
Okay it all seemed to be running fine but I fired up GTA4 and I'd say that within about 10 minutes the machines shut itself down again and won't boot up. The 4870 is pretty hot to touch but not so hot that it's unbearable.

Paigey
strange probs you are haveing there can you download everest there is a demo version take a pic of the temp screen and post it Well I would but I've plugged everything back in now, left it to cool and it got to the Motherboard Flash screen part then rebooted and done the whole clicky fan buisness again, think I'll give it about an hour to cool down or something, this is just starting to annoy me since I've now spent £680 on an upgrade and it doens't even work. Paigey
hay bud i know its crap when thing just dont whant to work but stick with it it will get sorted Well yeah but I'll need to give it some time as it doesn't want to start up now, just doing that clicking noise and the LEDs on the motherboard flash rapidly. Just leave it for an hour maybe then try and fire it up and install that everest program. Do you by any chance have MSN so you could kinda guide me through what I'm supposed to be doing? lol

okei
I have the exact same graphics card and GTA IV does exactly the same thing to me. You're not the only one with this problem.

Ahh right so it's possibly just something within GTA4 then? Cause I don't have any other PC games to even try it out on, might see if I can get a deal on Steam and see how it runs. The problems with the Radeon 4870 are known. Though, if you want, feel free to report your issue in the GTA IV troubleshooting forum.

I don't get the problem with any other games, only GTA IV. So maybe it's normal.
kingvercetti
The 4870 is a hot card as it is, but if it's of any use to you now: - Go into CCC, click the little down arrow next to Profiles (assuming you're in Advanced Mode), and click profile manager. - Type a profile name into the top box and a description if you need one. - Tick the box "all Catalyst Control Center settings" near the bottom. - Click save, then click close. - Then mosey on over to either: - "C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles" for Vista or "C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles" if you're on Windows XP (you'll have to enable showing of hidden files to be able to see the AppData folders.) - You should see an XML file with the name of your saved profile, open it up in Notepad or whatever you want. - Hit Ctrl+F and find <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0"> - Just underneath it will say <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />, change "Automatic" to "Manual". - A few lines down you should see <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">, on the line underneath it, where it says <Property name="Want" value="*" />, change the * to 65 (you can play around with the numbers to find a balance of not overheating but not sounding like a plane taking off, but for now I recommend 65), save the file, and close it. - Right click your CCC tray icon, click Activate Profile > *ProfileName*. You should hear the fan spin up louder, you'll have to manually enable the profile each time before you play a game/will be dealing with lots of heat and the noise might drive you insane at first, but at the very least you can eliminate the GPU as a cause of the problems. Hope thats of some help to you.
