Add RAM --> Increase FPS

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm considering to increase my FPS in GTA by adding some more RAM to my computer. I'm currently running a dual core 2,4 GHz, nVIDIA 7900 GTX 512 MB, 2 GB RAM and I thought that it will be the easiest way. I want to add 2 GB which will give me a total of 4. Is it worth? I've heard that the changes will be minimum in a game like GTA IV.

Thx

Only 64-bit OS will read the full 4GB. 32-bit will only read about 3.25GB. I don't think it'll be as much beneficial as upgrading your 7900. It was indeed a strong card in the time it was released, but it's pretty old now. Getting a bigger ram will reduce your loading time a little and might give you a 2-3FPS boost, I wouldn't expect much more.

I recommend going for it. I was running 2 gigs before aswell and got 23 fps average. And it would stop to load areas sometimes. Upgraded to 4 gigs and im up at 32 fps on everything on high. Textures maxed aswell with no loading of areas and its smooth smile.gif

Actually, Windows x32 can have 4 GBs of Ram. It will only detect 3GB but will actually use the 4. Windows Uses 3 and the 4th is reserved for hardware. BUT If you have Vista with service pack 1. It now detects the 4GBs.

I dont 100% know this is what I found. I use a x64 opperating system. Ill try it on my other computer. Ive been meaning to add some Ram into her.

But the bottom line is. Is if you have only about 2GB of RAM. Go for it, it will definatly bring up your FPS. Also if you do happen to get 4GBs and your OS (assuming its x32) does not detect the 4GBs. Then you can use the tweak guide to change RAM to video memory. Could work too.

I believe the tweak is this one: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=384473

I run the game on a Core2Duo E4400 2.0 GHZ... I did not see any increase of FPS when I upgraded from 2GB to 3GB RAM.

Only the stuttering goes away.

well your cpu is the crap. Unfortunatly your CPU dosent even meet min system specs. I have a AMDX2 4600+ 2.4GHz. It meets system specs but I had to overclock the crap out of it just so I could get over 30FPS. Did it though smile.gif All by my self.

I have 4 gigs of ram and 768 MB of video ram but my game still stutters like crazy the more i play, i think i can play IV somewhat stable because im using modest settings and only about 460 MB of video ram (medium textures and 1680x1050 resolution).

I have an old CPU (2.4 conroe) and i was thinking of replacing with a Q6600 but i dont know if this upgrade would be worth it confused.gif .

well ok, I see we've got some mixed opinions here. Let us for the sake of argument say that:

I'm running GTA on a system (1) with a FPS of ~7-15

and ~20-30 FPS on a different system (2)

Will, adding more RAM to system (1) grant me a bigger increase in FPS than adding the same amount RAM to system (2)?
