No offense... but you guys sound like 9 year old spoiled brats with no knowledge of how the gaming industry actually works. Your views on the purpose of DLC are comparable to thinking that the government is putting fluoride in the water supply to control your mind or that the moon landings were filmed on a sound stage. There is no conspiracy to leave things out and then charge for them later through downloads... Remember how helicopters were left out of GTA3? Did they do that to force you to buy VC? No. They did that because they needed more time to develop the programming properly on a completely new engine so that it didn't operate like sh*t. Be glad that you have DLC to download and update GTAIV rather than being forced to wait for the next proper installment in the series to get additional weapons and game play. Further more... go read interviews with R* from two years ago... it was made clear from the beginning that GTAIV was going to be kept fairly simple as they were developing a completely new engine. It was also stated that they wanted to go in a more serious and realistic route. They said there would be no planes or tanks from the get go. Add to that the fact the DLC is 360 exclusive... and your logic makes no sense. From a business perspective it makes no sense to release an "incomplete game" on two consoles... and then charging for updates to "complete the game" on only one of those consoles. Regardless of Microsoft paying $50 million... you are guaranteed to alienate 30-40% of your consumer base. This is like a mid cycle semi-sequel along the lines of the stories games... a GTAIV&1/2 if you will. Possibly even just an experiment in how well a game released online only would work.

Then explain to me what happened to the MP5,

*snip image*

and the silenced pistol

*snip image*

Don't be surprised if they come back to be sold as downloadable content.

The MP5 was replaced with the MP10, and the silenced pistol will, maybe, be in a future DLC pack. Your point?

Take the huge rollercoaster for example, who the hell guessed that would be unusable? There was a lot of stuff that was used to tease buyers in the trailer

Actually, that's not true at all. That area is modeled after the Coney Island funland and the rollercoaster there the "Cyclone" which hasn't been functional since 1969, hence why you can't use the rollercoaster.

@original poster

If all versions of GTAIV shipped on high capacity discs, ala Blu-Ray, there would be no difference in features such as rampages and taxi, ambulance missions and that sort of thing. It doesn't take a lot of space to fit that in...

and the reason is because of this corporate "fad" that is "Downloadable Content"

Let me explain

Before GTA4, all Grand Theft Auto games were shipped final versions. When you went to the store and slapped money down for a GTA game you got what you payed for Everything R* North wanted and designed was on the disc. This goes from extensive array of weapons (flamethrower, mini-gun, automatic shotguns, katanas, chainsaws) to Jet packs and fighter jets, army helicopters, tanks and a wide variety of clothes. The sub-missions like firefighter and ambulance and taxi. Where is the rampages one of the signature missions of gta rampage_ani.giframpage_ani.gif

Most of the said features are missing with no real good reason to think why they would take it out besides that they want to "sell" the features to you. Thats the only reason I can think of. Or maybe they ran out of space on the DVD since Rockstar said they wished they had blu-ray capacity.

I see a lot of "missing features" in GTA4, like the all the skate parks, why have all these skate parks and not have some sort of skateboards, the Driving Range, I could see you could take out your anger on a bunch of golf balls maybe even through a few people out on the range to hit?

I could almost go as far as saying Microsoft ruined GTA4 (for not having a better disc media that holds more data and paying for exclusive DLC) Ugh I just want to suicidal.gif

None of this is true. GTA games are "finished" at the point where Rockstar had to stop adding stuff because adding more stuff would delay the game. The DLC has a later release date so it's more time to do more stuff. To suggest that if there was no DLC, then all the DLC content would have shipped with GTA IV is nonsense.

San Andreas had the variety it had because it was built on top of everything made for GTA III and Vice City. The new detail and physics in GTA IV meant nothing could be reused and what you get in the game is what they had time to do.

The Blu-ray argument is also nonsense. Anyone who's loaded the game onto the 360 HDD knows it's less than 9GB, not even a full double-layer DVD. (The PS3 and PC versions are bigger because of higher resolution textures and video, not extra content.) No amount of disc space gives Rockstar extra time and talent to build more stuff. If every copy of GTA IV shipped on a 10-terabyte RAID, the game would be no bigger. It's as big as they could make it with the detail it has in 3.5 years.

I believe The Cylone is actually still in opperation. It was closed for many years from what i've heard but has been up and going again... if one is to beleive Wikipedia and the fact theres some rather cool youtube videos of people riding it!

Its counterpart in GTA does look very cool all rundown and closed though, but im a sucker for deserted/derelict things, they have a sense of mystery to them, like old railway lines!

Seeing it in game in pics like the manual did make you think wow that would be fun!

And well it would be if we could ride it with a GF in the game but hey I i'm managing without it!

I know im going to sound like a complete fanboy (have ps3) but im going to say it any way. The only way for this to end, is if no one buys the lost and damned. I know all of you guys will, but if you dont R* wont try this money grabing tactic again.

Yeah, you do sound like a complete fanboy... but I agree with you. (I'm playing IV on the Xbox 360). But let's be realistic: there is no way in hell you can get over a million people to boycott the DLC...

I myself will probably be getting it... but I will do it bitterly. I also miss all the "unreallistic" content all other GTAs had. mad.gif

R*'s not trying anything. They received 50mill to make a DLC for the XBOX360.

If Sony gave to sh*ts about their players they should do the same. Cry to them.

I think they don't realize what goes into actually providing the content and other expenses, however I am willing to bet that if this one performs well enough the next one will be cheaper. Or the same price. In this case, sales could either = "Perfect Price! Let's go hard on them!" or "We recouped, let's give them a deal!" The latter is not really synonymous with Microsoft though dontgetit.gif

If i remember correctly, i think it's R* who desides what the DLC will cost, not MS.

I think MS even said (don't remember where i read it) that if R* wants to give it away for free, then it's their (R*) decision.

Maybe it is because I personally prefer the more dramatic and film like direction of GTAIV... but I have a lot of respect for R* doing that.

I have to agree with this. Rockstar made the city so cinematic - the city itself is the star of the game. Along with the witty dialogue/characters, it makes it a form of entertainment in its own way.

I can't believe how many people here don't believe that Rockstar released an incomplete game so they could make more money off it with DLC.It makes absolutely perfect business sense to do that. They knew that they could release an empty game and as long as it was branded GTA IV, it would sell millions upon millions of units. With DLC they've got a way to make extra money off all the features they left out. DLC is really screwing the consumer. Developers now release games missing tons of sh*t then make you pay extra for it through DLC. I don't plan on buying DLC for any game, especially not GTA IV.

I can't believe how many people believe all this speculation.

"didn't fit on one disc"

"took things out for DLC"

Bunch of bull. They already got $50mil from Microsoft for the DLC, I am sure Rockstar are working hard on it (which is being developed, and moved back from November to February.

Don't worry... they'll be proven wrong soon enough when TLAD comes out and none of their left out features are in it... lol. Really, if you're expecting the planes, skating, ridable roller coasters, and rampages that were "left out" I don't think you will get them. And if you think that R* left out a few bikes, cars, guns, and fingerless gloves so they they could later charge for them you're nuts. Who the hell would pay for that? I'm paying for a new storyline/missions and new multiplayer modes, the other things are just bonuses.

Uh, what? He made a great point, and it's pretty self explanatory. Those images were released prior to launch so users can form favorable opinions about the game. These screenshots were meant to entice and hype consumers, and to offer a sneak peek as to what they can expect in the game. Ultimately, what did we all come to find out? The images were misleading.

Why remove the silenced pistol? Why remove fingerless gloves? Hell, for that matter, why remove any features that allow for more user customization, especially when it was already implied in pre-release screenshots? I guess you could blame the victim for getting overhyped or expecting too much, but there's no way to shake the feeling of getting robbed.

The hype machine is surely subjective, but how can anyone honestly blame the consumer? Rockstar spoke little of what was in the game and deliberately forced its customers to make presumptions. That's bullsh*t; I mean, not one game play video before release? What the f*ck? We got them for GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas, why not IV? It's not fair and is why a lot of gamers felt cheated - myself included.

From what I gather, the DLC won't fix the problems I have with the game. Frankly, I'm not surprised I'm disappointed. BUT, if the DLC blows all of us away by means of more things to do, more customization, and more diverse mission structures, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. I'm not holding my breath though.

The MP5 is not gone it was replaced by the MP10, The MP10 is just an MP5 with a different exterior.

There were multiple gameplay videos that were official and hundreds of leaked videos so we definitely got a good look at the game before it came out.

If you opened your eyes you would see GTA 4 is a pretty good game. It is the equvilent of GTA 3 because it was built from the ground up using a new engine. All that time they could have spent adding to the game was interupted by the fact that they had to completely rebuild the GTA series from nothing so it could fit in with all of the other next gen games. GTA 4 does seem lacking in many areas but it is a great taste of what is to come. GTA will never return to everything it once was but hopefuly it will become equally great in a different way.

This is my feeling too, if the DLC is simply more of the same linear missions then Im not willing to pay up, because once the story is done, its back to square one. TLAD looks quality on the tech front judging by the trailer, but there needs to be some clear info on what the features are.

PS I expect a further delay to release monocle.gif

Since when has a previous GTA had a second story-line with a whole new set of characters and main protagonist? By your logic the DLC in this one means they must have intentionally left out new stories and playable characters like this DLC offers so you could buy DLC ten years in the future.
