on a better note i have made my game playable 

 

seriously if you havn't defragged your hardrive yet... DO IT,

 

i have GTA 4 on it's own hardrive nothign else on it and wen't to defrag ALL the gta files were fragmented since doing a defrag and updating .net its much more playable,

 

i still get a little jitter and pop ups happen when changing island but other than that i can't complain until they start patching it, it's not perfect but is a darn sight better than my xbox version.

just think about it. the xbox streams all files from the cd with a accestime of 150ms and a troughput of nearly 5 megabytes. and while your harddrives does this ten times faster you tell me a defrag was still needed? don't say so...

do any of you do coding? do any of you have any idea how long it takes to pour over lines of code you thought was correct, make changes, test to see if it did anything, if not, start from line one and continue?

 

I do software coding at my job, no where NEAR as complicated as a 3d game, and to trace down a bug that effects EVERYONE takes days, much less if we have one customer with a specific bug we need to find, that can take a week.

and this is all on rack servers that are strictly controlled on what hardware it contains and what software its allowed to have it on, even the specfic VERSION of those softwares that are allowed.

 

Now combine that code scanning and fixing with rockstars obstacle of literally 1000's of hardware combination's that the scripting may bug out on, (not to include god knows how many programs running at the same time on said machine that can cause problems) and try to trace down the problems.

Yeah, well I test software for a living and I can assure you that the first thing I would do, if given some code that was supposed to "enable DirectInput controllers", would be to plug in a freaking DirectInput controller.

No, saying that a second patch is being worked on confirms that a second patch is being worked on.

 

As has been pointed out on numerous occassions; support does not mean patching. Plenty of modern games are supported and have significant outstanding issues that will never be patched.

 

It takes a minute to post a message saying that another patch is planned. The only really honest reason to not do this is that there is no such patch planned. The other possible explaination is that a patch is being worked on, but Rockstar are worried about the share price taking a hit if they actually admit the scale of the problems.

 

I personally don't think they're analysing the situation right if this is the case: the share price will rise if sales rise, sales will only rise if a proper patch is confirmed. But they think confirming a patch will hit the shares rather than help them. It hasn't dawned on them that their behaviour since the beginning of december has been such a detrimental factor in this.

Which is also not the same thing as specifically commiting to a real patch. Even the only one that has come was dressed up in the double-speak of a 'title update'.

You can't judge them by normal standards if they are consistently not behaving normally.

to tell u the truth, i really dont care if they have to miss christmas in order to make the game work. R* are a bunch of fu**ing liars!!! they lied about the minimum system requirements. i know because i passed those requirements, and the game is still completley unplayable. if i would have known this, i would have never thrown away my cash like that. the only reason they lied about the requirements was so more people could buy the game and they could make more money. BASTARDS!!!! this game is so badly optimized that sometimes it runs pretty smooth (although not as smooth as it should, by pretty smooth i mean 25 fps at most) and other times, it doesnt run at all!!. wat pisses me of the most is that during random times, it could be from the first 3 minutes of gameplay to the next hour of gameplay, the game enters wat i call "unplayable mode". it goes from running at an acceptable level (by this i mean 20 fps at most) to an unplayable level, where the game lags so damn much that iam forced to exit it, because it becomes completely unplayable!!! this happens wen i run it at high graphic settings, or low graphic settings. to me, this is wat annoys me the most, because wen iam in the middle of a mission, i am forced to quit and restart the game. and a lot of the times, (and by a lot i mean 85% of the time) wen i restart the game it goes into "unplayable mode" again, and again ,and again!!! even after restarting my pc. i have done every trick in the book to make this game playable, and still no success.

I have to agree a bit. Even if this game is built "for the future," alot of people have to realize what it means. It means that on LOW settings it will look better than any game out there if you put them on LOW. So perhaps the LOW in GTA4 is really like a medium or high in any other game. And then the increased settings in GTA4 are for future systems.

 

At the same time, if you at least meet or surpass the minimum requirements, you should at least be able to play the game on complete LOW settings without any lagging.

 

I do surpass the minimum requirements and I have everything on the minimum, except for traffic which I keep on 85 and have my resolution at 1024x768, and do experience low FPS especially in the busy city.

 

So there is something wrong there with the system requirements......................

Dufus, the difference between the settings at low, med and high are almost completely negligable compared with the few games that can genuinely be called future-proof out there. They're not even much by the standards of med-spec games like Bioshock and Command & Conquer.

 

Most dual-core CPU and *every* quad-core CPU machine running an nVidia 8 series card or above or ATI equivilent should run any game out right now at medium settings on native LCD monitor resolution with AA at 40+ consistent FPS. Few systems are managing this. Given the disparity between the power of current PCs and current consoles, there is no excuse for why GTA IV runs so poorly even at low and medium fidelity settings. Apart from the technical problems, Rockstar also made some catastrophic design decisions such as limiting the number of graphics options(under the mistaken impression that PC players are adverse to them when the opposite is a fairly obvious truism). Claims about 'future-proofing' are an old tall-tale that we shouldn't fall for, especially given the numerous features that the game lacks which *are* the future. No AA? No DX10 support? SLI isn't supported and neither is PhysX on nVidia cards.

 

The only evidence Rockstar has to offer in support of their future-proof claim is the poor performance and an artifical settings restriction based on a pre-written list featuring no 'yet-to-be-released' components and labels some brand new CPUs as old Pentiums, which isn't very convincing.

 

The Sonic Mega-Collection I bought for my niece runs like pants on just about any PC. By Rockstar's line of logic; that makes all the early Sonic games 'fiuture-proof'.

I reiterate yet again my previously stated position: I will buy this game immediately if Rockstar merely announces that a significant patch specific to performance issues is a priority commitment. I will reccomend it to everyone, my sig will no longer reflect my feelings(except in regard to the still-catastrophic Bully for PC) and I'll even grin and bare the unneccessary and useless bloat-ware foisted upon it.

 

If a patch of this nature is already planned, holding back on an announcement just to protect the share price is futile and wrong-headed. People will buy it if they can be confident it will be fixed, when they buy it the share price will return to what it should be. Is there a reference you have showing the game was based on DX8.1? If it's true it blows the future-proof claim away for good. But the Wikipedia page on DirectX says the 360 uses a version of DX9c and from my memory, HDR and post-proccessing effects are either limited in DX8 or aren't there at all.

As a software developer I can only say, if a patch is indeed released any time before Feb, i can guarantee you tht its gonna be damn f*cking useless. As for the first patch. Do u really think they came up with it within a fortnight??? No, they knew the problems before the game was released to the public. A fully functioning patch in a fortnight, Who are they kidding!!!

 

On the other side we have the patronisers who suckle up to rockstar saying give them a chance, they'll make it right, Oh poor Rockstar!!!!!! For crying out loud, shut the f*ck up. The first thing you do when developing a new project is to consider the hardware restrictions. You then proceed to building your application or in this case, game keeping these restrictions in mind. Failing to do so means the project fails. Rockstar seems to have thrown all these restrictions out of the window. They come up with a silly excuse that the higher settings are for the future. Thats a bit like me selling you a bottle of red wine dated 2008, and saying its vintage wine, pay me now, but dont open it till 2050!!!! I can understand you guys getting frustrated with all this whining going on but there is a reason behind all this whining. Besides u guys are whining abt the whiners which makes u guys whiners aswell.

 

All I can say, is chuck the GTA4 DVD to one side and spend time with your family. Be it your husband, wife boyfriend, grlfriend, kids or parents. ITS XMAS!!!!!! As for the non religious type, Xmas is a time when all family members are free from work. Thats why families get together. Whether you believe in christ or not doesnt even come into the equation. And for those who dont have a family, Even more reasons to chuck the dvd to one side. Get urselves a girlfriend or boyfrend (whatever tickles ur fancy). NO!!!! a real life girlfriend or boyfriend!!!!! NOT a virtual one from the game!!!!!!

Just because the minimum specs are within your pc's range does not mean the game is gonna play smoothly and how you want it..And also R* stated this game is meant on future high end pc's

The game is capped at 60FPS, so 20-30 fps is quite playable, 15-20 FPS is Xbox360's range.

As for harrassing R*, you went way out of line stating your childish remarks about how you wishing they "go bankrupt", or they "fire all their employees". Frik i recall San Andreas having more problems back when it first came out so I think R* has in fact been in the right direction, considering what all goes on in the game itself.

I like what the other poster said about coding..The sh*t takes time, and for a game this can take an enourmous amount of time, especially the coding thats involved in GTA IV..Id like to see you even try to program let alone code..

So for now, go play with your sisters frikin barbie dolls until R* even think about bringing up a new patch, thats if they even think about it. My advice to all of you is to upgrade your sh*tty pc to new age hardware and quit barking down the wrong tree...
